This means students will use counting strategies including counting on and back, double counting, and skip counting. This corresponds to the counting stages of the number framework so achieving level one means that a student is at the Advanced Counting Stage. Examples of their strategies might be: to calculate 6 + 5 count 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, to calculate 12 – 3 count 11, 10, 9, or to calculate three groups of three double counting 1, 2, 3,...4, 5, 6,...7, 8, 9. Grouping and equal sharing strategies are simple ways to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and fractions of sets problems without counting every object. Examples of these strategies might be: knowing 4 + 4 equals 8, skip counting 5, 10, 15, 20 to count four groups of five, or sharing objects in ones, twos or threes to find one quarter of a set of 12 items.
Adding and subtracting with counters or hands
Solve addition problems to 20 by joining sets and counting all the objects.

How Many Cubes?
Count a set of objects in the range 1–10.
- Equally partition a length into two, four, or eight parts using symmetry.
- Equally partition a length into three or five parts using estimation and iteration (copying of a unit).
- Name the result of equally sharing a number of objects among two, or four parties, extended to three, five and eight parties300
Learning to count: Counting one-to-one
- Understand that the number of objects in a set stays the same as changes are made to spatial layout, size, or colour.
- Understand that the count of a collection of objects can be trusted and worked from as objects are added or taken away, or the set is rearranged into parts.
Learning to count: Exploring collections
- Use counting to find the number when two different collections are compared (difference).
- Use counting to find the number when two or more collections are joined (addition).
- Use counting to find the number when objects are removed from a collection (subtraction).
Learning to count: Five-based grouping
- Identify five-based groupings.
- Represent five-based groupings in a variety of ways.

‘It’s not solving the problem’: Mixed reaction after city sells community mini-park
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A small public park in the middle of the city won’t belong to the public much longer.
The city council has signed off on a sale that has some neighbors feeling suspicious.
Some Makiki residents had mixed feelings about selling the mini park on Piikoi Street.
Those who oppose it are concerned about the fate of an old Monkeypod tree in the park, but those in favor hope the sale will improve the area.
“I haven’t seen kids playing in it, and it does seem to be a magnet for the homeless people,” said one resident who supports the sale.
After several failed attempts to revitalize the park, the city says it is selling it to RV Ventures, which owns homes next to it.
The city, based on its own appraisal, set the price for the 5,000-square-foot lot at $112,000.
Neighbor Amanda Kirby says it’s a mistake.
“Unfortunately, selling a park is like selling a car because you need an oil change. It’s not solving the problem, and you’re giving away such a huge resource for something that is bigger than this,” Kirby said.
Kirby and others wanted to save the park.
She even applied for the Adopt-A-Park program in April.
However, a park spokesperson said it was too late because the sale process was underway.
The Honolulu Parks Department points out there are several park locations about a half kilometer away from Piikoi Street Mini Park, which provide many more park-related opportunities.
It also says it aims to expand park and public properties and has added several acres of land to its park inventory in recent years, like one in Aina Hina.
When it comes to the sale of the Piikoi Street Mini Park, the public reaction was mixed.
“I mean, again, the space is not being used for anything at all,” one resident said.
“Even though our homeless community uses this park, they are part of the community, and they still should be able to have access to green spaces,” Kirby said.
The city says RV Ventures was the only one who expressed interest in the lot.
The company told the city council it plans to add a perimeter fence and beautify the area and it has no plans to remove the big Monkeypod tree.
“There was a lot of promises by RV Ventures; I understand their concerns and reason for privatizing the park, but a deed restriction wasn’t even allowed, which would have protected this tree and this space from being changed or constructed,” Kirby said.
The city council resolution states no buildings are allowed on the lot but does add that a zone change may be possible if approved by the Honolulu Department of Permitting and Planning.
The Honolulu Parks Department says overall it welcomes volunteers that want to help maintain its parks.
While it wouldn’t engage in a long-term volunteer agreement with Kirby since the property is expected to be sold, it is willing to work with her on some immediate maintenance of the park until the sale is finalized.

After Botched Rollout, FAFSA Is Delayed for a Second Year
Despite months of troubleshooting the college aid application process, the Education Department said the form would not be fully ready for next year’s students until Dec. 1.
By Zach Montague
Reporting from Washington
The Education Department announced on Wednesday that availability of the federal student aid application form would be delayed for a second year in a row, after months of last-ditch troubleshooting and contingency planning failed to fully fix significant problems with last year’s revised application.
Instead, the form, known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, will go live for “testing with a limited set of students and institutions” in October to iron out issues before launching fully on Dec. 1 for the 2025-26 academic year. The form is traditionally available on Oct. 1.
The FAFSA form has been the source of continuing dread for officials, students and college administrators since the department introduced a shortened and redesigned version last year that was intended to streamline the application process.
Far from becoming easier, however, the process has been plagued by a steady stream of bugs and data entry issues that locked students out, returned inaccurate aid calculations and severely tied up the enrollment process that plays out in the spring, when colleges typically notify accepted students how much they can expect to pay.
The delay announced on Wednesday mirrored the problematic launch last year, when initial delays in October foreshadowed much deeper problems that affected the form for months after it became fully available.
As recently as last month, the department was still running into problems with 2024-25 applications.
