Free Spelling Activities

spelling homework for kindergarten

I’m sharing 12 FREE, NO PREP, printable and digital Spelling Activities for Kindergarten, first and second grade students! These activities provide meaningful and engaging spelling practice and are perfect for any word work literacy center. I also offer details about my Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource that offers weekly word lists, practice activities, parent letters, assessments and MORE for k-3!

Hey Friends!

I’m curious…. in your already crowded instruction schedule, does word study have a place?  Have you found a way to make spelling instructiion more than just giving a list of words on Monday and assessing on Friday?  Resources for teaching spelling can be hard to come by. Sometimes it feels like with the intense focus on more critical thinking skills in literacy, explicit spelling instruction (or word study) has become an outdated practice.

But I think we can all agree we all want our students to be strong spellers!  Spelling is important!  It is related to reading.  If students can spell well, they will read well.   It’s related to writing.  When students spell well they can focus on communicating their ideas, rather than worrying about how to construct words.

If you are looking for a word study program to use with your students, or maybe just looking to freshen up your spelling activities then you have come to the right place.  Today I’m excited to describe to you the Year-Long Weekly Word Study bundles I have created for kindergarten, first, second and third grade, as well as share my FREE, NO PREP Spelling Activities!

Free Spelling Activities

You’ve got a lot on your plate, so to help lighten your load I created this resource that includes 12 different EDITABLE spelling printables!  It is totally free and provides meaningful practice and the repetition students need for mastery of the spelling words and phonics patterns you teach.  With many activities to choose from, spelling practice will always feel fresh and engaging for students.

To save you time, I created these Spelling Activities as an editable “autofill” document.  This means the ONLY thing you have to do is insert your spelling words (up to 12) into the spelling activities word list.  That’s it!!  Once you type your words into the word list, you simply print the pages you want to use.

Any of these activities make a great addition to your weekly word work routine.  Simply pair the spelling word cards with a pocket chart and print a few activities for an instant literacy center!  They also make great morning work or homework practice.

The FREE resource includes ALL of the following activities:

💗 Trace and Write Spelling

💗 ABC Order

💗 ipad Spelling

💗 Vowel Consonant Spelling

💗 Sign Language Spelling

💗 Rainbow Spelling *note this has been updated to include Rainbow Sound Spelling

💗 Triangle Spelling

A Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource for K-3

So while the activity pages I’ve shared above could be used in a variety of ways, I know there are teachers who are looking for more.  They want an actual program that explicitly teaches students different spelling patterns each week and offers them meaningful practice so students can master those patterns. That’s why I created Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resources for Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students.

spelling homework for kindergarten

Word study units are different from traditional spelling units.  Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, word study units focus on a specific phonics skill.  Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern.  They engage in activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill and investigate and discover the patterns in words.

Word study offers students opportunities to investigate and discover the patterns in words. When students have knowledge of these patterns they don’t learn to spell just one word at a time.  They can generalize and apply their new learning to their reading and their writing.

My Weekly Word Study Units have EVERYTHING you need to provide your students with effective word study instruction and spelling practice all year long!

I have different units for kindergarten , first , second , AND third-grade students. While the units vary a bit from grade to grade, they all contain these core components:

💕 A Scope and Sequence

We know that for instruction to be most effective, it must be systematic and follow a scope and sequence . The scope and sequences included in these resources are based on my learning including Wiley Blevins’ book,  A Fresh Look at Phonics *,  The Reading Teacher’s Top Ten Tools, and  Speech to Print  and are specific for each grade.

The word study units each include a phonics scope and sequence specific to the grade.

💕 Word cards

These word cards can be printed out on card stock and used in centers, small groups, or for your whole group instruction.

💕 3 Editable Practice Printables for Each Unit

We know that in order for students to master the skills we teach they need a lot of practice.  For every unit, you’ll get 3 editable practice printables. The activities vary slightly depending on grade and the skill that is being taught.

💕 Editable Assessments

spelling homework for kindergarten

While the assessments vary a bit from grade to grade, they all include:

– Word Dictation:  words that follow the week’s phonics skills and bonus spaces for review or high-frequency words.

– Sentence Dictation:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words.

– Spelling Error Analysis:  a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words. Students must correct the mistakes and rewrite the corrected sentences.

💕 A Teacher Assessment Guide and Master Word List

You’ll get an answer key for each unit to make it extra easy for you to quickly check those assessments!

💕  A Family Letter for Each Unit

We know that word study looks a little different than traditional spelling that families may be accustomed to. This letter will help families understand the shift, inform them of the focus for the unit, and offer them ways to support their children at home.

Kindergarten Spelling Words

spelling homework for kindergarten

Our kindergarten spelling words are broken down into a scope and sequence across 36 weeks to take you from the beginning of school through the whole school year! As you can see by the curriculum sheet, we start off the program with beginning sounds (week 1-3), then move on to onset/rhyme words (weeks 4-9), CVC short vowel words (weeks 10-18), consonant digraphs (weeks 19-24), ending CK words (weeks 25-27), and CVCe words (weeks 28-36). In addition, we include bonus words and more than 100 Dolch sight words like “like”, “will”, “away”, “one” and “off”. You’ll find each of the kindergarten spelling words lists below in individual, printable PDFs. Before you get started be sure to download the printable scope and sequence sheet .

What is the Spelling Curriculum? This spelling curriculum provides weekly lists of words, which progress according to phonics skills which are developmentally appropriate for students to learn, as well as bonus words to provide extensions for students who require a bit more of a challenge.

How can this curriculum help students learn to read and write? This curriculum follows methods which have been proven to help learners progress in their reading and writing skills at this grade level. In third grade, students should be familiar with many of the patterns taught in these lists, therefore those skills will become the building blocks for reading and decoding larger words, and making meanings from those words.

What research supports this curriculum? This curriculum uses a research based, systematic approach to phonics instruction. Phonics skills taught build on each other, and skills previously taught are incorporated in later word lists to activate learner’s schemata and build connections between new information and information previously learned.

How to Help Kindergarten Kids with Spelling Words Practice through Crazy Fun Games

Literacy & ABCs Sponsored Grade School Kindergartners Resources Spelling 4 Comments

Let’s make spelling words practice fun for kindergarten kids with some crazy fun games and a few common ideas too!

spelling games for kids

A friend recently told me that she doesn’t know ways to practice spelling words at home with her kids.

I didn’t have any tips for her right off hand except to make it fun.

So it got me thinking about different ways we’ve practiced spelling words, or done any kind of homework for that matter.

For the most part, my kids don’t have homework.

Their homework each week has been to practice sight words or spelling words and read.

That’s pretty much it!

They’ve never brought worksheets home that they have to do (yay!).

Learn how to help your kids with kindergarten homework - with lots of fun games and other ways to practice spelling words too

I’ve talked about common core in the past , and using Be A Learning Hero to find out what your child needs to know each year in school. These standards are set in place to help students be better prepared down the road.

Henry has always been a fast learner, so learning his spelling words has never really been an issue for us.

But we still practice the kindergarten spelling words throughout the week with little games and activities.

Every Monday he gets a list of words to learn and on Friday he has a spelling test.

And lately, the list of words is around a concept (like short a, or Long a CVCe), and then he gets two bonus words on the test to see if he grasps the concept.

Most weeks, I take it pretty easy in practice and this is what we do…

5 Obvious Ways to Practice Spelling Words:

  • Make a number code. Number the words on the spelling list and then write a list all mixed up to find and write the word.  You can save a copy of this doc that I use for each spelling list.
  • Write spelling words but leave out letters and put a blank instead for him to figure out what letter it should be (based off his list).
  • Make a scrambled spelling words game and have your kindergarten child put them in the right order.
  • Ask to spell random words off the spelling list (and others that are similar in concept) throughout the day.
  • Use worksheets sometimes. I have found several places online that you can change out the spelling list week after week for their worksheets. These are my faves: make your own printable word shapes worksheets , word scrambler and word search maker .

Now… there have been times when we need to work on a spelling word more and that’s when we try to make it more fun with kindergarten games!

That’s where hands on learning and activities comes into play!

10 Activities to Practice Spelling at Home

For some kids, spelling comes naturally. For others, spelling is an extremely difficult task that is avoided at all costs. It doesn’t have to be that way. These 10 simple activities to practice spelling at home will help your child become a better speller in addition to building their confidence!

*Guest post by Sarah from  Stay at Home Educator

These 10 simple activities to practice spelling at home will help your child become a better speller and build their confidence!

10 Activities for Spelling Practice at Home

Remember the days when you were a kid and you would have a spelling list to memorize each week? Maybe you practiced those words by spelling them out loud to a parent, or maybe you wrote each word ten times.

That’s how we used to practice spelling, but those days are gone. Educators are now using more systematic and authentic methods of spelling practice, and parents are looking for better ways to help their child with spelling at home. You still probably get a spelling list to practice each week, but rote memorization is never effective.

Here are ten simple, yet truly awesome activities, for doing spelling practice at home:

  • Spelling Memory – Write two sets of spelling words on small index cards and play a game of memory. When a card is turned over, read the word, spell it, and read it again.
  • Spelling Swat – Using the same set of flashcards from the activity above. Lay out one set on the table or floor so the words can be seen. Use the other set as a draw pile. Draw a card. Read the word, spell it, then find the matching word on the table. Slap the matching word on the table. Read the word, spell it, then read it again.
  • Wordo – This is an old game that is played just like Bingo, but with full words instead of letters and numbers. Again, if the word is on the Wordo card, read it, spell it, and read it again.
  • Rainbow Writing – Spell each word multiple times using a different color of the rainbow each time.
  • Around the Room Spelling Hunt – Using the two sets of flashcards from the first activity, place one set of spelling flashcards around the room and keep the other set for a draw pile. Draw a spelling flashcard, read it, and spell it. Read it again, then search for the matching word in the room.
  • Stamp It Out – Rather than writing out spelling words multiple times, use alphabet stamps instead. (Or letter manipulatives work well, too.) The key here is to practice one word several times in a row.
  • Spell by Syllables – For longer words, practice spelling by spelling by syllables. For example, the word elephant would be broken down into el-e-phant, spelling just one syllable at a time.
  • Spelling Word Sorts – This is an excellent activity for spelling lists where all the words focus on a single spelling sound, but different spellings. Sort the words according to how that focus sound is spelled. For example, if the sound is long a spelled -eigh and -ai, then the words sleigh and weight would be put into a different group from snail and aim.
  • Word Scramble – This is an oldie, but still an effective way to practice spelling. Use letter manipulatives to spell a word from the spelling list, copying it if need be. Then, scramble the letters up and try to re-spell the word without looking at the spelling list for help.
  • Sensory Words – Use a sensory material to write out spelling words. Shaving cream, salt, play dough , and cookie sprinkles are all super fun.

Additional Tips for Spelling Practice at Home

Of course, spelling practice should always be supervised. This will ensure that your child is getting the most out of an activity as well as practicing the word correctly! Set aside some time every evening to do a quick spelling practice. Even if it’s just ten minutes.

If your child is overwhelmed by the number of words to practice, then break the list into chunks and practice only a few at a time. And always keep some easier words to mix with the difficult words. You don’t want your child to feel defeated and lose confidence by making the list too difficult during spelling practice.

Free Printable Worksheets for Kindergarten

Kindergarten worksheets are a wonderful learning tool for educators and students to use. This is why we have and will continue to create hundreds of free kindergarten worksheets that are designed to fit into a standard kindergarten curriculum . The main focus of our kindergarten website is to provide free educational resources. In these difficult economic times, we believe kindergarten teachers and parents can benefit greatly from our printable kindergarten worksheets.

What Free Kindergarten Worksheets Would You Like to See?

We have conducted extensive research on the types of kindergarten worksheets teachers and parents use the most. It is not a perfect science and we know we can always be doing a better job to serve you. If you have suggestions on what kind of kindergarten worksheets we should create or what categories we should expand on, we would love to hear from you. Is there a kindergarten worksheet that you just love and would like to see more of? Please let us know using our contact webpage, via email, on Facebook, or through Twitter. Thank you for your time in advance!

The First Kindergarten Website to Utilize Modern Web Technology

Our entire collection of kindergarten worksheets have been made into a free web app powered by HTML5. HTML5 does not require the Flash plug-in that most educational websites use to provide interactive content. This means that our kindergarten worksheets will work almost anywhere. Kindergartners can now complete the educational worksheets on the iPad and other forward-thinking devices. The free kindergarten web app we have developed makes use of the iPad's multi-touch feature. Kids can use their fingers to draw, write, and solve problems directly on the free kindergarten worksheets. Teachers and parents can then print the completed kindergarten worksheet. Our free online kindergarten app also works on desktop and laptop computers running modern web browsers like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer 9+.

The Importance of a Good Early Childhood Education

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, having the firm foundation of early childhood education will ensure children's success in life. It is also imperative that students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills during their first year in school as well as establish an appreciation of who they are in a social society. Teachers are able to implement these worksheets in a variety of early childhood lesson plans. Even though our "kindergarten worksheets" are designed for kindergarten students, they are also useful for children that are in preschool or first grade. These diverse kindergarten worksheets will create a fun learning environment that ultimately assist in cultivating valuable critical thinking, cultural, and linguistic skills.

Kindergarten Worksheets to Print, Download, and Use Online

Our fun kindergarten worksheets are broken down into four main areas. They are math, English, general learning, and holiday worksheets. These categories are then divided into different subjects so that parents and teachers can easily find the free printable kindergarten worksheets they are looking for. The kindergarten math worksheets section includes addition, subtraction, counting, fractions, place value, graphs, measurements, pattern words, and numbers. The Kindergarten English worksheets section offers reading, alphabet, writing, phonics, vocabulary, sight words, opposites, rhyming words, and spelling. The general learning section provides science, Spanish, social studies, dinosaurs, health, zoo, foreign languages, butterflies, and kindergarten coloring activities. The last section is our kindergarten holiday worksheets. This includes Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. We also offer summer, winter, spring, and fall printable worksheets. All of the kindergarten worksheets on our website can be printed out, downloaded for later use, or used directly online. Anyway you choose to use our free kindergarten worksheets, we hope they help enhance the students' appreciation for education.
