SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC), 2024

The SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC) is an annual event aimed at fostering innovative thinking among primary and secondary school students in Nigeria. It provides a platform for young minds to propose technological solutions to national challenges.

Purpose: Inaugurated in 2020, the CDEC is part of SystemSpecs' Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to promoting capacity development in the Nigerian ICT industry. By encouraging young Nigerians to tackle everyday issues, the competition contributes to intellectual growth and societal progress.

SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC), 2024

Topic: The theme for the 2024 competition is "Protecting the Nigerian Child from the Dangers of Online Technology." Participants are tasked with exploring strategies to safeguard children in an increasingly digital world.

Eligibility: - Open to primary and secondary school students in Nigeria aged 9 to 16.

- Junior category (ages 9 to 12) essays must not exceed 1,000 words.

- Senior category (ages 13 to 16) essays must not exceed 1,500 words.

- Winners will receive generous rewards, including a high-capacity laptop, premium headphones, a portable laptop stand, a smart wristwatch, and one year of internet data, among other items.

- Consolation prizes will be awarded to other participants.

Application Process:

- Interested candidates should access the application page  

- Essays must be written in English and reflect original thought.

- Each participant is limited to one entry.

- Entries must be endorsed by an accredited school official, parent, or legal guardian.

- Deadline for submissions is April 12, 2024.

Submission Guidelines:

- All submissions must be in PDF format and include the student's name, home and school addresses, email address, and contact phone number.

- Double entries will result in automatic disqualification.

- Submissions must be received by March 15, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.

Notification of Winners:

- Successful students and schools will be contacted in the second quarter of the year.

- Updates on winners will be announced on @nercng social media platforms.

The SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition offers a unique opportunity for Nigerian students to demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills. By addressing the theme of online child protection, participants contribute to building a safer and more secure digital environment for all. Nigerian students in primary and secondary schools have been invit­ed to enter the SystemSpecs Annual Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC), SystemSpecs Group has announced.

SystemSpecs in a statement, said with a vision to remaining a software institution of reference in Africa, the company is taking a proactive approach to inspire, equip, and develop young Nigerians with IT-based knowledge and resourc­es that will drive transformative change in Nigeria and help shape a sustainable world.

The topic of the 2024 essay is “Protecting the Nigerian Child from the Dangers of Online Technology”.

The essay will explore the stu­dents’ awareness of the vast op­portunities for value and wealth creation, while also discussing the challenges digitization can bring. Participating students will be chal­lenged to discuss ways to keep them­selves safe from digital threats.

As discussions about social media etiquette, privacy settings, and responsible online behaviour become increasingly important, according to Mr. ‘DeRemi Atanda, Managing Director, Remita Pay­ment Services Limited, children must be taught and given some room to learn and grow from their own choices.

“We understand now more than ever, the importance of empowering children to recognize threats and to address them with their parents and or guardians, while equipping them with the skills to protect them­selves” adds Mr. Atanda.

The contest, which will com­mence on February 20th, 2024, is an opportunity for students to artic­ulate their solutions for Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape.

The CDEC initiative stands as one of SystemSpecs Group’s Cor­porate Social Responsibility initia­tives to power an inclusive and sus­tainable future for the technology industry in Nigeria.

The CDEC is just one example. The first CDEC Essay Compe­tition was held in 2020. Since its in­augural year, there have been over 8,000 submissions from students, with participation growing to about 1,000 schools each year. This educa­tional initiative reflects the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to facilitate capacity development for the ICT industry.

Also speaking on the 2024 competition, Mr. Henry Eguabor, head, Brands and Marketing, SystemSpecs Holdings Limited said: “We are delighted to announce this essay contest for students in Nigeria, as it provides an important opportunity to encourage our young minds to engage with issues of importance to their country. Nigeria has experienced significant technological growth in recent decades. However, much remains to be done. It is essential for us to understand the perspectives of our young future leaders and their attitude towards key developmental challenges”.

According to Mr. Eguabor, the essays will be judged for their originality, clarity of thought, quality of research and relevance to Nigeria’s unique challenges.

Award winners will be announced on May 27, 2024.

SystemSpecs will award prizes to winning students as well as certificates and gifts. Winning essays will be published on the SystemSpecs website and social media platforms.

SystemSpecs Celebrates National Tech Champions at its Fifth Annual Children’s Day Essay Competition Grand Finale

The outstanding young talents who excelled in the 2024 SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC) were celebrated at a prestigious National Winners’ Award Ceremony held on June 14th 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria. For the past five years, the CDEC has catalysed promoting technological awareness nationwide. 

The epic ceremony not only honoured the exceptional students but also celebrated the achievements of their schools and states, highlighting the importance of nurturing intellectual prowess and academic excellence among the next generation of leaders between the ages of 9 and 16.

Bakare Oluwasubomi of ljaiye Ojokoro Senior High School, Lagos State and Aletan Oluwajuwonlo of Apostolic Faith Secondary School, Ibadan, Oyo State emerged winners of the 2024 SystemSpecs CDEC in the senior category and junior category respectively.

The annual Children’s Day Essay Competition is a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of SystemSpecs, demonstrating the organisation’s steadfast commitment to fostering technological advancement in Nigeria. By nurturing and developing the minds of young Nigerians, the programme aims to cultivate the next generation of innovative thinkers and technology leaders, thereby accelerating the growth of the country’s technology capacity.

According to Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, Group Chairman, SystemSpecs Holdings Limited, “We have taken the responsibility upon ourselves to provide every Nigerian child irrespective of creed, culture, or constituency an opportunity to be exposed to the amazing world of technology and its transformative power, thus setting them up on a path for success in an ever-increasing competitive world where technology continues to be a defining factor.”

With about 3,500 essay submissions recorded from various secondary schools all over Nigeria, 50 finalists were shortlisted, from which three outstanding contestants emerged in both the Senior and Junior Categories.

The senior category saw Anoje Xavier of Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, FCT, emerge as the first runner-up, while Elugbaju Iseoluwa of Word Faith Group of Schools, Abuja, FCT, secured the second runner-up position. In the junior category, Olowookere Anuoluwa of Redeemer’s Academy College, Ibadan, Oyo State, took the first runner-up spot, and Gershom Somtochuhwu of Trinitate Staff School, Ikwerre, Rivers State, claimed the second runner-up position.

The overall winners for both the senior and junior categories received 1 million Naira each, the second prize winners, 750,000 Naira; and the third prize winners, 500,000 Naira, as well as brand new laptops, plaques, and a variety of other rewarding prizes.

The Managing Director of Remita Payment Services Limited (RPSL), ‘Deremi Atanda, affirmed the Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC) as a vital initiative dedicated to enhancing the country’s technological capabilities. He expressed his delight at the remarkable growth of the programme, which has garnered increasing interest and participation from across the nation, demonstrating its significant impact on the development of technological resources in Nigeria.

“We are committed to the long term, having been at the forefront of business for the past 32 years. We firmly believe that investing in local capacity building is crucial for the country’s global competitiveness. Our goal is to nurture a new generation of highly skilled, tech-savvy Nigerians, equipped to drive innovation and excellence, and make a meaningful impact on the global stage,” he said.

Lagos State emerged victorious as the winning state in this year’s Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC), boasting an impressive 19 winners in the top 50. Meanwhile, Apostolic Faith Junior Secondary School in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, took home the coveted winning school awards in the junior and senior categories, respectively. As a reward for their excellence, each winning school received 10 laptops, while the winning state also received 10 laptops, further empowering the next generation of leaders with cutting-edge technology.

The evaluation process for CDEC essay entries involved a three-stage process. This rigorous evaluation process ensures fairness, credibility, and excellence in identifying Nigeria’s young Tech Champions.

According to one of the judges, Prof. Lawal Babatunde, “We assessed how effectively the students elaborated on the points presented in their essays, demonstrating a clear understanding of how the provided content applies to real-life scenarios pertinent to this year’s competition theme. Additionally, we sought to evaluate their ability to synthesise their arguments and arrive at a coherent conclusion, building logically on the points previously presented in their essays.”

The SystemSpec’s Group Head of Corporate Services, Bukola Adeboye, commended the finalists on their outstanding achievements, reaffirming SystemSpecs’ dedication to cultivating future leaders for Africa through the competition and other strategic initiatives.

Lagos State emerged victorious as the winning state in this year’s Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC), boasting an impressive 19 winners in the top 50. Meanwhile, Apostolic Faith Junior Secondary School in Ibadan, Oyo State, and Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, took home the coveted winning school awards in the junior and senior categories, respectively. As a reward for their excellence, each winning school received 10 laptops, while the winning state also received 10 laptops, further empowering the next generation of leaders with cutting-edge technology.

The evaluation process for CDEC essay entries involved a three-stage process. This rigorous evaluation process ensures fairness, credibility, and excellence in identifying Nigeria’s young Tech Champions.

According to one of the judges, Prof. Lawal Babatunde, “We assessed how effectively the students elaborated on the points presented in their essays, demonstrating a clear understanding of how the provided content applies to real-life scenarios pertinent to this year’s competition theme. Additionally, we sought to evaluate their ability to synthesise their arguments and arrive at a coherent conclusion, building logically on the points previously presented in their essays.”

Nigerian students in primary and secondary schools are invited to enter the SystemSpecs Annual Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC), SystemSpecs Group has announced.

With a vision to remaining a software institution of reference in Africa, SystemSpecs is taking a proactive approach to inspire, equip, and develop young Nigerians with IT-based knowledge and resources that will drive transformative change in Nigeria and help shape a sustainable world.

The topic of the 2024 essay is “Protecting the Nigerian Child from the Dangers of Online Technology”. The essay will explore the students’ awareness of the vast opportunities for value and wealth creation, while also discussing the challenges digitization can bring. Participating students will be challenged to discuss ways to keep themselves safe from digital threats.

As discussions about social media etiquette, privacy settings, and responsible online behavior become increasingly important, according to Mr. ‘DeRemi Atanda, Managing Director, Remita Payment Services Limited, children must be taught and given some room to learn and grow from their own choices. 

“We understand now more than ever, the importance of empowering children to recognize threats and to address them with their parents and or guardians, while equipping them with the skills to protect themselves” adds Mr. Atanda.

The contest, which will commence on February 20th, 2024, is an opportunity for students to articulate their solutions for Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape.

The CDEC initiative stands as one of SystemSpecs Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to power an inclusive and sustainable future for the technology industry in Nigeria. Mrs. Bukola Adeboye, Group Head, Corporate Services, SystemSpecs Holdings Limited said : “We believe we have a responsibility to give back to the communities in which we live and work as well as support and foster new learning experiences in education among Nigerian youth. The CDEC is just one example. The first CDEC Essay Competition was held in 2020. Since its inaugural year, there have been over 8,000 submissions from students, with participation growing to about 1,000 schools each year. With a strong focus on securing the future of Nigeria, SystemSpecs believes implementing educational ICT initiatives at school level can prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs, business leaders, nation builders and innovators, ensuring they are not left behind in the current wave of ICT for development.

Also speaking on the 2024 competition, Mr. Henry Eguabor, Head, Brands and Marketing, SystemSpecs Holdings Limited said: “We are delighted to announce this essay contest for students in Nigeria, as it provides an important opportunity to encourage our young minds to engage with issues of importance to their country. Nigeria has experienced significant technological growth in recent decades. However, much remains to be done. Financial technology company, SystemSpecs has announced winners of the 30th edition of its annual Children’s Day Essay Competition.

 At the end of the contest which had about 2000 entries from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, 11-year-old Oluwaseun Samuel Temitayo-Ojo of Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos emerged the winner in the junior category while 15-year-old Ekemini Keziah Effiong-Robert of African Church Model College, Agege, Lagos, emerged winner in the senior category.

The first and second runners-up prize in the junior category went to 10-year old Somadina Edeh of Independence Layout Nursery and Primary School, Enugu and 12-year-old Emmanuel Nkanu Nkanu of St Anne High School, Calabar respectively.

For the senior category, Chetachi Best Mbalu from Lagooz School, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos state and 13-year-old David Nkereuwem of Holy Mary Comprehensive College, Benin City, Edo came second and third. 

The winners, aged between 9 and 16, shared relevant technology-led ideas useful in transforming the nation’s educational system.

According to the organisation, the first-place winner in each category will get a high capacity laptop, a topnotch headphones, a free 3-month coding course at uLesson Coding School, monthly 10-gigabyte internet data for one year, branded travel suite case, a unique keepsake hoodie and a thermal flask, and school bag.

It added, “The  second-place winner in each category would also receive a high capacity laptop, a topnotch headphone, a free 3-month coding course at uLesson Coding School, monthly 5-gigabyte internet data for one year, a trendy hoodie, a thermal flask, and a school bag while the  third-place winner in each category would receive a high-performance tablet, a headphone, a free 3-month coding course at uLesson Coding School, a branded hoodie, a thermal flask, and a school bag.” 

Speaking, Group Head of Corporate Services at  SystemSpecs, Oluwasegun Adesanya stated that  the firm’s annual Children’s Day Essay initiative aligned with the organisation’s core values – Innovation and diligence, as well as its corporate social responsibility commitment geared towards developing capacity for national growth and development through technology.

He noted that this year’s competition was unique being a part of the company’s 30th-anniversary celebration. He applauded all partners who made the competition went well.

Adesanya said, “The quality of essays that we received from this year’s participants was mind-blowing. We have also identified inspiring solutions proffered by these young Nigerians as we are set to take the next step of translating their ideas to reality through our corporate social responsibility and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.”

Speaking on the evaluation process, one of the  judges, Chief Operating Officer, FinTech Association of Nigeria (FinTechNGR), Dr Babatunde Obrimah reaffirmed that winners   selection process  was bias free as all entries were judged without the identities of the participants and in multiple assessments, that led to shortlisting the winners as solely determined by the panel of judges.

“Many of the entries we received offered impressive solutions to improve Nigeria’s educational system, which proved that these children are eager to see the change they wished for. I commend this competition’s organisers for harping on the need to innovate to ensure Africa remains relevant and prioritises quality for a viable economy,” Obrimah said.

This competition is not the usual essay contest – it is a chance for all primary and secondary school students in Nigeria between ages 9-16 to showcase their innovative ideas for solving national problems using technology.

This year’s topic is “Making Nigerian Children Better Citizens Through the Use of Technology”. Participants are to explore this theme to come up with mind-blowing ideas.

SystemSpecs is Africa’s leading technology powerhouse with interests in Payments, e-commerce, HR & Payroll, and other software technology solutions and services, with over 30 years of successfully translating the continent’s technology dreams into reality. The SystemSpecs Annual Essay Competition was inaugurated in 2020 to express the group’s CSR commitment (Develop Capacity towards National Growth and Development through Technology) and stimulate the minds of young Nigerians to consider adopting technology to address everyday problems.

  • Your essay must be in English.

Topic:  Protecting the Nigerian Child from the Dangers of Online Technology

Requirements

  • Primary and secondary children schooling in Nigeria ages 9 years and not older than 16 years. 
  • The Junior category (ages 9 to 12) submits a maximum of 1,000 words, while the Senior category (ages 13 to 16) submits a maximum of 1,500 words. 
  • Your essay must be in English. 
  • You are only allowed to submit one entry per participant. 
  • Your submission must be your original thoughts; plagiarism will not be tolerated! 
  • An accredited school official or parent or legal guardian must endorse your entry.

Systemspecs essay competition sets to kick off it’s 2024 edition of the children’s day essay annual competition..

The SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC) is an annual event aimed at fostering innovative thinking among primary and secondary school students in Nigeria. It provides a platform for young minds to propose technological solutions to national challenges.

Inaugurated in 2020, the CDEC is part of SystemSpecs’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to promoting capacity development in the Nigerian ICT industry. By encouraging young Nigerians to tackle everyday issues, the competition contributes to intellectual growth and societal progress.

The theme for the 2024 competition is “ Protecting the Nigerian Child from the Dangers of Online Technology .” Participants are tasked with exploring strategies to safeguard children in an increasingly digital world.

Eligibility:

– Open to primary and secondary school students in Nigeria aged 9 to 16. – Junior category (ages 9 to 12) essays must not exceed 1,000 words. – Senior category (ages 13 to 16) essays must not exceed 1,500 words.

  • Winners will receive generous rewards, including a high-capacity laptop, premium headphones, a portable laptop stand, a smart wristwatch, and one year of internet data, among other items.
  • Consolation prizes will be awarded to other participants.

Application Process:

– Interested candidates should access the application page – Essays must be written in English and reflect original thought. – Each participant is limited to one entry. – Entries must be endorsed by an accredited school official, parent, or legal guardian. – Deadline for submissions is April 12, 2024.

Submission Guidelines:

  • All submissions must be in PDF format and include the student’s name, home and school addresses, email address, and contact phone number.
  • Double entries will result in automatic disqualification.
  • Submissions must be received by March 15, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.

Notification of Winners:

– Successful students and schools will be contacted in the second quarter of the year. – Updates on winners will be announced on @nercng social media platforms.

The SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition offers a unique opportunity for Nigerian students to demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills. SystemSpecs 2024 Children’s Day Essay Competition For Nigerians.

There’s almost no limit to what you can do online! 

You can access unprecedented amounts of information and connect with millions of people across the globe and much more. 

Unfortunately, the internet is also home to certain risks, many of the same you’d face in the real world. These risks are amplified for children who don’t know how to navigate the web safely. 

Although we know no one can physically harm you through a computer screen. But to stay safe online, you’ll want to take a more cautious approach. 

At SystemSpecs, we believe it is possible to have a positive and safe experience online. However, we also recognize as a child, you need to be aware of the dangers of online technology. 

And that’s why we invite you to share your thoughts on the 2024 topic: Protecting the Nigerian child from the dangers of online technology” and why it is important! 

Your perspective matters. We look forward to your submission.

Winners of the essay competition will receive exciting prizes, including a high-capacity laptop, top-notch headphones, a portable laptop stand, a smart wristwatch, internet data for one year, and more.

Requirements

Who can participate?  

  • Primary and secondary children schooling in Nigeria ages 9 years and not older than 16 years. 
  • The Junior category (ages 9 to 12) submits a maximum of 1,000 words, while the Senior category (ages 13 to 16) submits a maximum of 1,500 words. 

Criteria  

  • Your essay must be in English. 
  • You are only allowed to submit one entry per participant. 
  • Your submission must be your original thoughts; plagiarism will not be tolerated! 
  • An accredited school official or parent or legal guardian must endorse your entry.

Selection Process

  • Watch out for the submission portal; it opens on February 20, 2024 and closes on April 20, 2024. 
  • Winners will be announced on May 27, 2024, and the award ceremony will take place on June 7, 2024.
