Paying for Cultural Attractions

Hi! This is my first essay write-up after 3 years of getting a 6 in my writing in IELTS. I am planning to take the IELTS this august so I hope you can comment and advise regarding my writing. Foreign visitors should pay more than local visitors for cultural and historical attractions. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Nowadays, tourism is the number one source of income of most towns especially in my country- Philippines. Visitors from foreign land and even the locals are being charged with entrance fees by merely visiting the beaches, zoos, amusements parks and even the historical places in a certain town in exchange for the preservation cost and profit in favor of the town being visited. Apart from this, some say that visitors from the place should pay less than those foreign ones, I strongly agree on this idea. Tourist attractions in a town or city are being maintained and taken cared of by locals so they should primarily benefit from it. The favors should be given back to its people through the discounted prices they can enjoy every time they visit tourist attraction in the local area. Secondly, the inhabitants in the area are the ones who paid taxes for the benefit of starting the development of their hometown. Needless to say that residents are already paying a portion of the ticket money through the monthly contributions they pay. Lastly, by lowering the cost of visitation fees of the locals, they will be encouraged to invite friends, workmates and other potential visitors in their own place. It provides a sense of confidence and pride to invite others and be proud with the support that the local government gives to its people. In the end, it is logical to say that the locals must enjoy a lesser charge than foreign visitors in visiting historically important places including museums, art exhibitions and parks. The ideas does return the favor of patriotism. Besides, government business us nothing if its people are not happy to support it.

Visiting New or Familiar Places

I have an essay, hope you can fix it and give me a band for it. Thank you! Some people like to travel to somewhere new and different when they go on holiday, while others prefer familiar places. Do you think there are more advantages or disadvantages to visiting new places? Most people take a holiday every year during the summer, and when they book on holiday, they have a choice. They can go to a place that they have known before, or they can go to a place that is new to them to discover. This second option has positive effect to us, however, it still have a negative effect. In my opinion, travel is about exploration. Although it is reassuring to go to a place you know, but it is less things to discover and eat. Example, you can have new experiences, eat new food you have never try, visit unusual scenery if you go to a new place. More than that, the most essential advantage of visiting new places is to develop the understanding of the world. Today, you can find and learn everything from books and internet, but the best way to find out and learn about other culture is go to a new place, discover about their language, clothes, music, and so on. However, there are some disadvantages when you go to a new place. Firstly, it is more stressful when you plan for the hold trip, example, you have to book a train or a plane ticket or book a room in a hotel. Secondly, it is easy to make mistakes. Although you can find information on the internet, but the information is not always true. When you have been to a place before, you will know which restaurants and trips to avoid. In conclusion, I think there are more advantages than disadvantages when you go to a new place because it will improve your knowledge and make a change. If you keep doing the same things, you cannot develop new and interests thing in the world.

Visiting Difficult Places Essay

Can anyone give feedback on my writing. Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic. What are the advantages and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places? It is generally said that humans are always striving to enrich their learnings through exploring new places. It may be the reason that more people tend to visit remote places where living conditions are harsh with difficult accessibility. There are advantages and disadvantages in this approach. Exploration of these places equips humans with realities and true meaning of their lives. One may learn his own capabilities and limitations. They may also satisfy their self-actualization needs and get to know themselves. Siberia is such example, where despite of difficult situations people tends to visit and upon returning, they contribute more positively to their own communities. When large number of people come to these places, it is also good for their local economy. Many businesses grow with influx of tourism industry and it brings positive impact of lives of residence. For example, there are now many tour operator companies are going to launch their business in Sahara Desserts and many new jobs are created in area. Some disadvantages are also associated with this, if more people are visiting these places than it becomes difficult for Government to ensure their safety. As these area lacks basic infrastructure hence more lives are put in danger. Most people are not fully experienced to survive in these brutal conditions and they add more burden on local services. Secondly, most visitors don’t take care of local customs and annoy local communities. To conclude, we may say that when tourists visit to isolated lands, it improvises themselves and brings positive changes of local community. But at the same it brings challenges for local community.

Travel to Remote Places Essay

Nowadays, scientists and tourists can travel to remote natural environments such as the South Pole. What are advantages and disadvantages of this development? Over the past few years , there seems to have been a significant increase in tourist trips to the places where conditions are difficult or unbearable such as the Sahara desert or Antarctic, This type of tourism is expected to become more popular in the upcoming coming years. But like any emerging phenomenon, it also has several advantages and disadvantages. I will try my best to elaborate on each of them briefly. Let’s take a look at the advantageous of traveling to Sahara or Antartica: Based on the latest statistics from Columbia University which was done on 300 volunteers, it was concluded that traveling to remote areas can be extremely dangerous due to various reasons. In fact, trip to difficult and remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can reduce the stress and anxiety of tourists. In addition, tourists can challenge their will and power by going to these areas. Dr. LeoFang ( 2009 ) , who is a psychologist at the Wolford Clinic in Tennessee, conducted several scientific studies which published the results in the American Psychological Association shows that people are frustrated with life after traveling to difficult and remote areas feel more empowered in life an increase life expectancy in them. Traveling to remote areas has some drawbacks: Traveling to remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can be extremely deadly to the traveler because the harsh nature of these areas contrasts with the urban spirit and comfort that tourists are accustomed to. Besides, any injuries or damage to the body due to the distance from the hospital can be dangerous for the injured person. another problem with such trips is that they are limited to natural attractions. Tourists cannot enjoy other aspects of tourist trips such as shopping malls and historic centers and Etc. In conclusion, traveling to the desert, which is becoming more and more popular among tourists every day, has some advantages and disadvantages that tourists can pay attention to them when deciding to make such trips to have a more comfortable and pleasant trip.

Importance of Tourism Essay

Many developing countries place a lot of importance on tourism. Why is this? Do you think that this is a positive or negative development? Owing to over interest in the tourism, individuals are gaining lot of knowledge.which rises the inclination of people towards belief that it has a devastating impact on them.others, however including I harbour the thought that it is positive infested to them. In the starting paragraph with this statement people believe that the importance of the tourism in the developing countries is more instead of poorer countries. Initially, although, tourism is liked just for enjoyment by certain people still some individuals think that they adapt to new knowledge by travelling .for example when individuals go to any cultural place,they can know about culture and moral values along with history.as a result, they can explore their knowledge.what is another factor? apparently,during the travel time individuals meet with new people.various kinds of language are learned by person because when they meet with new people they try to speak language of them.consequently, they enhance their communication skills. On the other hand, if developing countries give more important on tourism, the life experiences would increase because when person go to another country l.they not only learn about new language but also adapt diverse kinds of things such as how to treat with another and learn many kinds of traveling experience. hence, the tourism have positive effect on them. The cynics of the aforementioned notion, on the other hand, oppose the view, they are of the opinion that if the most people travel from one country to another country. the environment pollution would rise with it because they would travel on any vehicle not by walking.therefore, people would reduce the tourism. To epitomise, indeed somehow I strongly believe that tourism is beneficial for exploring knowledge still devastating effects it had on environment are such that neglecting them would be considered folly.

Pros and Cons of International Tourism

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment. Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages? In some countries, tourism plays a big role in keeping their economy stable. Places like Greece, Maldives, and Malta rely heavily on international visits due to the fact that other industries have not been much developed in those areas. Although it dose pose a concerning risk environmentally and locally, I would say that the benefits are far greater than the disadvantages. To begin, international tourism brings a lot of money to the country. Plane tickets, visas, and other accommodations brings income to the country in the form of tax, this supports the economic growth, allowing more money to circulate in the market. Furthermore, as tourist needs a lot of services, it opens a lot of business prospects to the locals. Places like hotels, villas, and restaurants are needed for the guests, these places are also a way to decrease unemployment rate as they need a lot of human resources to run. International tourists are also beneficial as they can promote the various tourism spots to other people. Publication of the areas can lead to more visits allowing popularity to rise. Tourists may also experience the cultural differences, allowing it to be more well-known internationally. Of course not everything in international tourism is beneficial, the minus point is it increases the risk of environment damage and interference in local communities. Pollution, excessive land-use, and waste are some of the threats coming from the guests. This can disturb local residents as they are the ones who will have to bear the consequences of this damaging behavior. In conclusion, international tourism poses great advantages to both the government and local communities. However, to eliminate the downside, strict rules and punishments are needed to ensure the environment and people living in the area are not being disturbed.

IELTS Essay: Increase in Travel

Today more people are travelling than ever before. Why is this the case? What are the benefits of travelling for the traveller? In the past animals were being used to travel which made the whole process quite difficult. However, at present majority of the individuals are travelling because of the new updated facilities being provided which made transport quite convenient and at the same time it provided an affordable package as well. In addition, the population is also being benefited as the method of travelling are being rapidly developed and comfortable along with the attracted packages providing them with an opportunity to discover a new place and interact with an individual with completely different tradition and along with that they can also enjoy tourism with cheaper flights as many affordable packages are currently present. To commence with, as with the development in technology made life much more easier than before, there is also a huge impact of it on transport as the population with average salary are given cheaper packages in order to enjoy their journey with their family. Similarly the workers in most of the field are being provided with a chance to travel abroad in order to represent their companies, which is quite helpful for them professionally and personally. Furthermore, there are many advantages of travelling like an individual can learn a foreign language, interact with other people of different cultures and tradition.Moreover, they can practice a foreign language and experience a totally different journey along with that they willbe also able to discover a new place To conclude, though only a few used to travel in the past due to less services being provided to them but recently a huge number of individuals are ready to go to a new place and travel for long hours in order to reach their desired goals

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment .

Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

Travel industry has experienced a major boom in the later part of the 20th century and has been a blessing in disguise, which has helped some weaker nations to uplift their failing economies. While questions have been raised regarding the negative impacts that accompany the growth in the travel sector, these definitely do not outweigh the associated benefits.

The economic boost that accompanies a successful travel industry is quite well recognised and Thailand is the best example. The entire Thai economy revolves around tourism and the country had been able to uplift its socio economic status through its flourishing hospitality sector.  Egypt is another nation that is heavily dependent on its hospitality sector. The growth in the number of incoming tourists leads to innumerable prospects in terms of local entrepreneurship & employment generation. This is also associated with international investments and infrastructure development. The national authorities, in order to ensure safety of the international visitors provide better law and order enforcement, improved transportation and healthcare facilities, which in turn benefit the local population.

On the other hand, the rising influx of holidaymakers is associated with increased incidences of crimes, prostitution and antisocial activities like drugs, human trafficking and gambling, which affect the values of the indigenous society. The local population are also affected by the growth in property value indices. Environmentalists are also concerned regarding environmental remodelling, that is associated with increased tourist activities in natural reserves. In this context, it is worth mentioning that, by enforcing stern law and order and implementing strict legislations, governments can control most of these negative impacts of tourism .

Henceforth, it can be confidently conveyed that, even though the growth in travel industry has accompanying negative social impacts, these do not outweigh the contributions made by this sector towards social development.

Model Answer (Band 8):

There is no doubt that international tourists have brought a lot of positive impact to many countries. However, these benefits also come with many negative issues. Personally, I feel that international tourism has resulted more advantages than disadvantages to the affected nations in general. In this essay, I will examine both the benefits and their related cost and support my opinion accordingly.

First of all, many people argue that many local inhabitants have been sacrificed in order to make way for the development of tourist attractions. For examples, tress were cut down so that hotels can be constructed; old heritage sites were demolished and replaced by new shopping malls; local residence, especially the aboriginals, have to be relocated so that their land can be used for new airport. However, people tend to ignore the economics and social benefits brought upon by these developments. For example, the number of jobs created by the constructions of hotels and shopping malls could stimulate the economic growth of a nation and benefit the both the people and the nation as a whole.   

Secondly, many people also claimed that the influx of foreign tourists will increase the social problems such as crime rates immoral activities.  For examples, they claimed that tourists usually like to visit pubs and clubs in the evening and that will lead to higher rate of alcohol related problems such as noise pollution , vandalism and prostitution. However, I believe that the millions of foreign dollars brought in by these tourists could actually decrease the problems if the   money are put into proper used by the government. For example, the tax collected from the entertainment outlet could be used to help combat crime and actually make the country a safer place.

In conclusion, I believe that if we look at the overall picture of international tourism when doing the cost-benefit analysis, we will see that they are more advantages than disadvantages.

what type of essay is this? what I mean to say is, Is it advantage amd disadvantage essay or two part essay?

This would fall under “advantage / disadvantage essay”. You will need to discuss both and then come to a conclusion if one outweighs the other.

Dear Pragnesh,

For Academic Writing Task1, you can write the overview in your introduction. Alternatively, it is also fine to write the overview at the end.

If you write the overview in the intro, then start with the phrase “Overall, …” ; when you write it at the end start with “In summary, ….”

Finally, if you have written the overview in the intro then do not repeat it again in the summary, and vice versa.

It seems to be that there were grammatical errors in the essay. Specifically –

On the other hand, the rising influx of holidaymakers is associated with increased incidences of crimes, prostitution and antisocial activities like drugs, human trafficking and gambling, which affect the values of the indigenous society.

Drugs are not antisocial? The ‘usage’ of illegal substances/drugs are; Prostitution is not a crime unless legalized and the sentence does not indicate if you consider it a crime? Human trafficking is definitely a crime and again your sentence does not indicate if you consider it a criminal behaviour? Infact your sentence indicates that you consider human trafficking to be antisocial (and not a crime)? Same for gambling.

I would have said:

“…..increased incidences of criminal behaviour, such as prostitution and human trafficking, and antisocial activities, such as gambling and the use of illegal drugs….”

There is no restriction on using idioms and phrases in essays. IELTS essays are not like the academic essays that you write in university level courses.

It is fine to use an idiom or phrase if the context is appropriate. However, don’t overdo it by using too many idioms.

Many cities are replacing cars with bicycles. What are the reasons for this? Which do you think is better? As my point of view , I can not support its totally. Some areas exchange’s of car is bicycle .While reducing car ,air pollution and sound pollution can also control up-to some extend . Whereas both cycle and cars are a essential part of our daily life While car are very helpful during hot climate as well as rainy seasons .We can travel together with families in car ;if we have emergency case like hospital cases,airport ; cars are very useful in these time ,also we can carry lagges .The negative side of cars are the daily increase of petrol price ,where as difficult to do parking in town areas

One of the common IELTS topics that appears in the exam is that of travel and tourism. In today’s lesson, I will help you learn about this topic so that you can do well in your next test.

First we will look at a little vocabulary about travel and tourism , then we will explore some IELTS speaking and writing questions to give you an idea of what to expect.

Vocabulary about Travel and Tourism for IELTS

When you prepare for IELTS, you never need to know any specialist vocabulary, so for questions about travel and tourism you may find that you can give a brilliant answer with just simple language, as long as it is used with grammatical accuracy. Knowing the difference between “I went to London” and “I was going to London” is very important, for example.

Of course, there are other things to know. It helps to know modes of transport and related vocabulary. [You can learn about transport here .] Another interesting aspect is knowing things you might encounter while travelling, such as accommodation.

I made this PPT about travel accommodation many years ago, but I have just uploaded it today. 🙃 I hope you find it useful.

You should also know the necessary language to talk about types of travel or reasons for taking a trip. Sometimes, new words enter the language, such as “staycation,” which is a very recent portmanteau .

The topic of travel and tourism is really common in IELTS speaking. It could easily occur in any of the three parts of this test, so you should be prepared to answer a wide range of questions. [You can find some examples here .]

These questions will be pretty general and simple. It is entirely possible that the same basic question could be asked in a number of different ways.

Perhaps the most common question would be “do you like travelling?” This is very similar to “have you done much travelling?” Of course, the focus has changed slightly but the overall meaning is similar: it’s about you and travel .

I’ll give two sample answers to these questions so that you can understand better:

Q: Do you like travelling?

A: Yeah, I absolutely love travelling. I have visited many countries over the past few years, but of course this all stopped recently because of the virus.

Q: Have you done much travelling?

A: I have done quite a lot of travelling in my life. Altogether, I’ve visited about 50 countries and I try to spend a few weeks each year seeing new places.

Note: It is unlikely that these questions would be asked together because they are very similar. Also, I pretty much answered the second one in the middle of the first answer. I just included them to show how a “do you like travelling” IELTS answer example.

Vaguely Related: Space Travel

I definitely consider space to be a separate topic from travel, but there is some small degree of overlap here. For example, there is a reported IELTS speaking question that goes something like this:

• Do you want to travel in outer space?
• Would you want to travel in outer space?

You might also see this incorrectly reported as “do you want to travel in the outer space?” but this is not correct. We cannot say “the” before “outer space.” It is not a single, definite place. [Read about definite articles here .]

There are numerous possibilities for IELTS cue cards about travel. Here are two of them:

• Describe a place you have visited.
• Describe a place you would like to visit.

Of course, these would require basically the same sort of vocabulary to answer them, but the key difference would be the grammar. In the first instance, you are talking about the past, but in the second you are talking about a possible future.

Here is another one:

• Describe a memorable holiday.

This is pretty similar to the first cue card above, but the word “memorable” must guide our approach. You can see my answer in this video:

In part three of the IELTS speaking test, the questions will become more difficult. These will include abstract topics like age, gender, ethics, and so on. You might encounter questions like this:

Q: Do you think men and women enjoy different types of holiday?

A: I suppose that in general they probably do have different preferences, but of course we should acknowledge the fact that everyone is different and so there are women who enjoy stereotypically male holidays and men that enjoy stereotypically female ones. To give an example, it could be argued that men prefer more active, robust holidays that involve uncertainty, adventure, and even danger. However, I know some women who love this type of thing and so it is not really smart to make assumptions about people.

Q: Do you think that travelling abroad always changes people’s perspective on life?

A: No, not at all. While it certainly is possible that travelling can change people’s perspectives, it is by no means guaranteed. In fact, when you travel to places like Thailand, you see that most tourists have no understanding of the local culture and just hold on to their own original views. The experience may change some people, but I think most people live in a little bubble when they go abroad, and this prevents them from really learning anything.

Notes: I described the sort of travel that men like in interesting terms: “men prefer more active, robust holidays that involve uncertainty, adventure, and even danger.” This is good, descriptive language!

Travel and Tourism Essays for IELTS Writing

Now we shall move on from speaking and instead look at the IELTS writing test. In this section, I will show you some questions about travel and tourism, then show you my sample band 9 answer.

Here is a question that features data about people travelling. I thought that this travel and tourism essay was really interesting, so I have included it here alongside my sample answer.

The line graph displays the numbers of tourists that visited an unnamed Caribbean island between 2010 and 2017. The tourists are divided into two groups – those staying on cruise ships and those staying on the island itself – and these had a loosely inverse correlation. The total number of visitors, however, rose more or less continuously throughout the eight-year period.

In the first year recorded, which was 2010, there were about twice as many tourists staying on the island as those staying on cruise ships. A year later, the number staying on cruise ships doubled to a half million, but this dropped back to around a quarter million in 2012. When the figures for tourists on cruise ships dropped, the number staying on the island rose quickly and over the coming few years, as this sudden increased levelled off, the number of people who stayed on board their ship continued to grow again.

Between 2012 and 2017, there were more and more visitors staying on cruise ships. From just a quarter million, this rose to two million, while the figures for those on the island levelled off at just one and a half million and then dropped slightly in the penultimate year, before finishing at one and a half. This meant that, for the final two years, more tourists stayed on cruise ships than on the island.

Notes on the Answer

In the introduction, I said “an unnamed Caribbean island.” It can sometimes be difficult to introduce something whose name you don’t know, and this is a really convenient way to do it. I strongly recommend you say “an unnamed ___” when this situation arises.

I have also used very few numbers in this essay. Instead of writing 250,000 or 2,000,000, I have said things like “a quarter million” and “two million.” This is much easier. [You can read more about IELTS and numbers here .]

Here is another travel and tourism essay question:

In future, more people will choose to go on holidays in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday.

Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Band 9 Answer

In recent years, people have coined the word “staycation” to describe the phenomenon of taking a holiday closer to home. This essay will argue that such holidays will become more common in the future.

First of all, it may seem as though international travel will become increasingly common, but in fact it is quite clear that it is an unsustainable trend. The carbon cost of flying to another country is enormous, and so many people have begun to ask whether it is ethical to continue doing this. Beyond just the personal level, it is clear that pretty soon governments will have to impose restrictions to limit the number of flights; otherwise, the world will suffer immensely from the burden of so many journeys.

In many parts of the world, people are probably ready to embrace this situation. Humans have had a terrible impact upon the world and many feel that it is time to undo the damage done. This involves some measure of personal sacrifice, which in this case could be forgoing the sort of international trips that used to be quite common. However, this is not all bad. Although foreign countries and exotic locations are exciting, there are treasures almost everywhere. Countries like the UK have poor weather, which is why so many people travel to warmer climates, but the natural beauty of the landscape and the extraordinary historical and cultural sites present myriad options for curious travellers. There will likely be a resurgence of interest in such trips.

In conclusion, it is quite possible that in the future people will realise how much damage humans have done to the world. Many of them may endeavour to make the sort of sacrifices necessary to counteract this ecological destruction, and one small step is embracing local travel.

Notes on the Essay

First of all, you can see that I incorporated the word “staycation” right at the beginning. When you use modern language like this, please don’t just jam it carelessly into your essay. Often, it is very informal, so you can only use it when properly introduced. In this case, I clearly explained its meaning and commented upon it from a sociological perspective.

You can see that a lot of my language related to the environment, and of course that is often tied to the topic of travel and tourism because of the negative impacts these have on our planet.

Tourism is a significant economic driver for many countries, providing income, employment, and the opportunity for cultural exchange among visitors and hosts. However, it also poses challenges such as environmental degradation and the disruption of local communities. Balancing the benefits of tourism with its impact on destinations is crucial for sustainable growth. This field offers rich insights into the interactions between cultures, economies, and environments.

Debates in tourism often focus on the sustainability of current practices and how to balance economic benefits with environmental and social impacts. Proponents of eco-tourism argue that it provides a way to enjoy natural beauty and contribute to conservation, while critics may question whether eco-tourism is just a marketing label rather than a genuine practice. Another hot topic is overtourism and its effects on local populations and environments, with various stakeholders considering measures like visitor caps or increased tourist taxes.

The impact of COVID-19 on global tourism has been profound, with travel restrictions and safety concerns drastically reducing tourist numbers. Initiatives like Venice’s tourist tax and Barcelona’s regulations on short-term rentals are examples of how cities are attempting to manage tourist influxes to benefit both visitors and residents.

Tourtism is becoming increasingly important as a source of revenue for many countries, but its disadvantages should not be overlooked.

What are some of the disadvantages of tourism? How can countries overcome them?

The tourist industry serves as a crucial economic pillar for numerous nations, providing significant income, but it also introduces challenges that may diminish its benefits unless managed effectively. This essay explores the negative aspects of tourism and proposes measures to mitigate these issues.

The drawbacks caused by travel constitute a major concern. The main one is that the influx of visitors can lead to significant ecological damage as natural sites struggle to cope with increased waste and disruption. For example, popular destinations like the Great Barrier Reef face threats from both pollution and physical damage by tourists, which can have long-lasting impacts on marine biodiversity. Moreover, the sociocultural impact of tourism is equally troubling, with the potential to dilute and commercialise local customs. This commodification not only alters traditions but also replaces authentic cultural expressions with versions tailored to tourist tastes, which can erode the cultural identity of a community.

There are two main solutions to counter these effects. First, it is imperative for nations to establish stringent environmental protections that include limits on the number of visitors allowed at sensitive locations and the enforcement of strict pollution controls. These measures help preserve both the natural environment and the quality of visitor experiences. Additionally, to address the socio-cultural impact of tourism, it is essential to develop sustainable tourism strategies that prioritise the preservation of local customs and cultural identity. This can be achieved by involving community members in tourism planning and decision-making, ensuring they have a voice in how their culture is presented and shared.

In conclusion, the key issues with the travel industry are its negative environmental and sociocultural impacts. The best way to mitigate these is to implement practices in tourism that are ecologically responsible and involve members of the community to ensure the protection of local culture. By implementing such strategies, countries can enjoy the economic benefits of tourism while minimising its potential negative effects on local communities and the environment.

Model Essay 1

International tourism is often heralded as a significant economic boon, yet it also brings challenges that can overshadow these benefits. I firmly believe that the disadvantages, such as socio-economic disruptions and environmental degradation, notably outweigh the advantages, like economic growth and cultural exchanges, which will be explored in this essay.

Economically, the influx of tourists provides substantial revenue that can transform local economies. Tourists not only contribute directly through spending on accommodation, dining, and attractions but also indirectly support local employment and infrastructure development. For example, regions like Bali have thrived economically, turning traditional crafts into profitable markets and creating thousands of jobs in hospitality. Such economic injections can lead to improved local facilities and a higher standard of living; however, this influx of capital and tourists also has a downside. The presence of tourists can disrupt local communities, often leading to inflated prices and a cost of living increase that burdens the native population. In cities like Venice and Barcelona, residents have voiced concerns over tourists crowding out locals and escalating living costs, diminishing the quality of life for the permanent inhabitants.

While the economic gains from international tourism can be substantial, it is imperative to consider the environmental costs that accompany this growth. The carbon footprint associated with international flights is considerable, contributing significantly to global warming and climate change. Moreover, overtourism leads to environmental degradation, as seen in the coral reefs of Thailand, which have suffered extensive damage due to increased human activity and pollution. This has resulted in the loss of marine biodiversity and compromised ecosystem health, compelling the Thai government to close several marine parks temporarily to mitigate this impact.

In conclusion, while international tourism does contribute positively to economic development and cultural appreciation, the social and environmental costs it imposes often outweigh these advantages. Given the increased expenses borne by local communities and the irreversible damage to the environment, it is evident that the disadvantages of international tourism surpass its benefits.

Model Essay 2

Nowadays, as there is a growing number of international tourists, international tourism has been a controversy topic due to its advantages and disadvantages. I firmly believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

One of the most significant advantages of international tourism is economic benefits. As international tourists explore cultures in foreign countries, they spend a large amount of money on their flights, hotels, meals and souvenirs. This allows countries to gain further income, which can be used to improve the lives of local inhabitants by increasing the quality of the social welfare system, implementing new medical equipment and financially supporting poor families. Therefore, international tourism benefits both travellers and local residents by allowing them to explore cultures and improve the quality of their lives, respectively.

However, the disadvantages of international tourism should not be overlooked because negative impacts on local inhabitants are prominent. For instance, in Japan, international tourists could not comprehend the poster written in Japanese, disobeying the indicated rule of not eating while walking on the streets and leaving rubbish on the ground. Subsequently, the local council needed to create additional posters in different languages to prevent further rubbish from being disposed incorrectly. Moreover, airplanes release a massive amount of greenhouse gasses that result in higher temperatures globally. Due to this environmental impact, many countries are experiencing unprecedentedly  high temperatures every year, experiencing increased and more devastating natural disasters. Considering both the financial implications of these disadvantages, including wages paid to the council members and economic loss due to natural disasters, that possibly expend financial benefit gained through international tourism, and the loss of lives as a result of devastating natural hazards, it is clear that the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh its advantages.

Therefore, I am in complete concurrence with the notion that the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh its advantages, considering both increased expenditure due to international travellers that can use up the financial benefit gained through the advantage and the environmental impact that results in devastating natural disasters.

Essay 1- 

In a time when globalization is sweeping the entire ecosystem, tourism has a crucial responsibility for developing global economies and nations. Nowadays, tourism is what makes widespread economic contributions to all countries, although there are a few negatives as well. This essay talks about the advantages and disadvantages of tourism before concluding with a final opinion. 

The biggest benefits of tourism are quite obvious, i.e., boosting the national GDP and economy and creating more employment for local citizens and communities. Tourists use diverse solutions while traveling, including booking hotels, flights, transportation, and guides. They also require food, shopping, and leisure while indulging in a wide gamut of other activities. This leads to extra income for thousands, which contributes handsomely to the country's economy. Tourism increases the GDP significantly and helps create more employment opportunities. People are always needed as tour guides, operators, booking agents, hotel and restaurant staff, transportation personnel, etc. Tourism thus has huge benefits to bring to the table for any country and its local population. 

Yet, there are some negatives of tourism as well. This includes the rampant damage of several well-known destinations and increased crime or illegal activities. The huge number of tourists thronging popular cultural and historical landmarks and monuments and other centers of pilgrimage lead to major structural and environmental damage. Along with this aspect, national resources are often overused and overexploited for handling this rush of tourists. At the same time, tourists bring their jewelry, money, and other expensive items, becoming targets for anti-social criminals and thieves, leading to a growth in illegal activities and crime. Hence, tourism has some disadvantages as well. However, the Government can take proactive steps to eliminate the same by providing more security and policing while maintaining popular monuments, tourist spots, and natural resources alike. 

To conclude, it can be said that while tourism does have specific disadvantages, it has a positive impact on livelihood, national economies, and overall employment. It also fosters cultural exchange, information gathering, and educational growth. Hence, while Governments may fix the negatives with proactive measures, the positives far outweigh them, in my opinion. (370 words)

Tourism has witnessed rapid development over several decades, becoming a major industry worldwide. The global tourism sector is responsible for generating a major percentage of economic wealth for several countries. Most developing economies are also hugely dependent upon tourism for earning national income and the smooth operation of several business sectors and industries, along with maintaining their levels of employment generation. Yet, like every other sector and institution, tourism will always have some advantages and disadvantages. Other benefits of tourism include better relationships and political equations amongst nations, easier travel regulations, and inter-cultural and socio-economic exchange, which fosters better understanding, knowledge, and education overall. Heritage is also promoted and understood by every country at a global level. 

However, there are several disadvantages of tourism as well. Growth in tourism means a higher chance of illegal activities and crime, especially theft, since tourists bring valuables in their wake. Secondly, foreign tourists often damage and vandalize places of national interest and importance. They often litter areas while damaging natural resources and beautiful spots simultaneously. They are often ignorant about social and legal conventions in foreign countries and end up violating the same in some situations. Tourism also opens up avenues for illegal migration and trading illegal items at times. However, despite all these disadvantages, I firmly believe that the advantages surpass them in every sense of the term. (339 words)

In conclusion, tourism undeniably plays a critical role in the global economy and cultural exchange, offering substantial benefits such as economic growth, cultural preservation, and international understanding. However, it also poses challenges including environmental impact, cultural commodification, and economic dependence. Balancing these advantages and disadvantages requires sustainable and responsible tourism practices that respect local cultures, protect natural environments, and promote equitable economic benefits. As the world continues to become increasingly interconnected, understanding and addressing the complexities of tourism is essential for preserving its positive impacts while mitigating its negative effects. It helps in new business opportunities, generates direct and indirect employment, adds to the GDP of the country and earnings of the region and its local people, promotes entrepreneurship and also works to promote the country globally. 

The disadvantages include pollution, littering, waste and a strain on the natural resources and infrastructure of the country. Tourism often leads to severe income dependency and may cause fluctuations in the future as a result. It often leads to crime going up in a country owing to the influx of different people. This is a tough question for me because it depends on a lot of factors!

I’ve known a lot of people from others countries. Typically, they are good people and I learn a lot about their culture.

But I also recognise that locals get fed up with tourists sometimes.

Really, I think it comes down to the personality of the tourist, the local, and the situation they are in.

It might also depend on the country’s culture!

Maybe some countries are more conscientious, some are more welcoming and laid back – but that is just speculation on my part.

That’s too complex of an answer for IELTS so I have to shorten it.

Some believe that tourism does more to create tension between countries rather than helping individuals better understand other cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Reported IELTS Exam on February 8th

Many people are of the belief that rather than easing tensions, tourism actually further strains relations between countries. In my opinion, despite some newsworthy incidents, the vast majority of tourist interactions are positive.

The reason that many have turned against tourism as a means of soft power is the memorable disputes that naturally arise. A good example of this would be the recent outbreak of Coronavirus in China and the resultant worldwide panic. Chinese tourists have since reported on social media channels increased harassment and chilly treatment abroad. Such reactions are irrational because Coronovirus is a tame threat relative to normal strains of influenza, various diseases and other fatalities over the period including vehicular deaths. This psychological bias applies to small-scale tourist interactions as well: people are more likely to remember recent, negative events even if their actual impact is marginal.

The overwhelming majority of interactions between tourist and local are friendly and conducive to increased understanding. The average person taking a trip, to most countries, will encounter friendly customs officials, chat amiably with their taxi driver on the way to their hotel, where the staff will likely be very accommodating. The negative interactions are rare though they may stick out and make memorable stories. The more common scenario is that a tourist’s curiosity will be matched by local enthusiasm to make a good impression of themselves and their country. These complimentary human drives from the tourist and local, re-enacted in millions of micro-interactions daily, may not make headlines but they foster empathy and understanding between otherwise diverse cultures.

In conclusion, the cumulative impact of friendly encounters engendered by tourism far outweigh exaggerated slights. People should keep this in perspective when travelling and rise above prejudice and confirmation bias.

• Give your opinion. You can also write this quickly but be sure that you choose a clear overall side.

Hi, Can you make clear something, please? 1. “The reason that many have turned against tourism as a means of soft power are the memorable disputes that naturally arise” The reason IS the memorable disputes or the reason ARE…? 2. “The average person taking a trip, to most countries, will encounter friendly customs officials, chat amiably with their taxi driver on the way to their hotel, where the staff will likely be very accommodating.” What does “THEIR” refer to? Should we change “the average person” into “the average people”? Thanks in advance.

1. Yes you are correct – I will fix that – thanks! 2. Their refers to the average person. It is very common in UK (but not US) English to use the plural pronoun their/them instead of say he or she to refer back to a singular person. 3. You should say the average person with the definite article. If you want to say ‘average people’ that is fine as well without the definite article.

In recent years tourists have paid attention to preserving both the culture and environment of the places they visit. However, some people think that it is impossible to be a responsible tourist. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

It is argued that there is no chance for tourists to take responsibility in protecting the environment and culture of host countries. However, I disagree with this view and believe that this is a worthy aim that can be achieved by various ways.

Firstly, if everyone was equipped with the knowledge of cultural diversity and the vital importance of the environment, they would be more aware of their behavior. For example, children should be educated to avoid throwing rubbish into surroundings or touching fragile historical objects in museums when they travel abroad. Besides that, western holiday-makers who flock to tourist destinations in Asian countries should wear suitable clothes because they are insensitive to local youngsters there. This could prevent children from copying negative attitudes such as rowdiness and outbound tourists may set a good example of good manners. ieltsxpress.com

Secondly, it is possible to promote cultural differences through both local and international media in order to reduce the risk of having unintentionally offensive actions to indigenous practices. The clearest example of this is that cow which is an edible animal in most countries is a sacred animal and is worshiped in festivals in India. Without such knowledge, tourists may bring with them cow meat and this could leave a bad impression on locals. ie lt s xpress

Finally, local authorities could enact and enforce strict rules on protecting the environment and core traditional value, which could act as a deterrent. In Singapore, for example, throwing away garbage, even a small thing like chewing gum could be fined severely and this rule is widely-known in many nations. As a result, every tourist coming to this country abides by rules and makes efforts to preserve historical sites as well as natural scenery.

In conclusion, I would contend that sustainable tourism development could be achieved through education, media, and laws, and tourists could definitely become culpable for the environmental and cultural problems.

Tourism is a unique human activity, experienced by millions of people worldwide every year. As people differ in their attitude towards almost everything in life, the same applies also to tourism; where some treat tourism globally as the focus of their act without scrutinising the other related activities pertaining to it. Hence, the term ‘responsible tourism” emerged; in order to pay a sufficient attention of the tourist to the local cultural values of the destination country, and – more globally – to the environment. From my point of view, tourism must be labelled as a “responsible activity”; even if it is mandatory to issue as many local and international legislations to make it so.

While making tourism, should the tourist carry his culture with him to the foreign country? Obviously, the answer is “No”. If the tourist insists on doing this, he will sure subject himself to great dangers especially in communities with intolerant local citizens. One of the best examples of this is the “Thump Up” sign which is greatly practised in many countries; where this sign is USA means “OK or very good”; while it is considered as very crude and impolite in Greece (which is a famous touristic destination). Thus, it is crucial to teach the tourists a list of common practices that they must refrain from doing, explaining the reasons behind this. ieltsxpress

When it comes to the environment, it is indeed very unfortunate to find that the touristic areas are those with the greatest pollution and litter output! A few years ago, it was really surprising that an international campaign of volunteers aimed to clean the Himalayas from the trash left by the climbers.

In conclusion, tourism should be dealt with in the same way as freedom; that it must be “responsible”, respecting both the local cultural and environmental values of each society.

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Tourism

All around the world, tourism is losing its glitter, due to the lack of responsibility by the government, tourists and local people. Some people consider taking responsibility in tourism by each individual is essential for the better environment, preserving cultures and improving the economy, whereas others think, this cannot be achieved in reality. In my opinion, tourism responsibility is required for better future of the world and this can be achieved with proper implementation.

People travel to different places but never show any attention or responsibility towards its improvement. To make this world a better place to live in, one should take it as one’s responsibility. First of all, the government should take a step, releasing more funds towards tourism and for providing much security. For instance, we find filthy guest houses, restrooms and no cleaning of surrounding places. People travel to enjoy the beauty of nature, but if they find this kind of dirty places, their enjoyment which lead to a bad memory. Even, local people and tourists who travel should obey the guidelines and policy of tourism for a better world.

However, there are some people who think when it comes to implementation of this; it is like a day dream which cannot come into reality. It is difficult for poor and developing countries to utilise more funds towards tourism. On the other hand, it is difficult to provide security and neatness at tourist spots unless every tourist shows attention as his responsibility. For instance, if there are sign boards which shows ‘please use right direction, danger at left direction’, they use only left and if there are any dustbins with ‘please use me’ , they do not use them at all. Thus it is very difficult to make it into reality.

In conclusion, better tourism can be achieved only if every individual takes the responsibility towards tourism. One should think, how much one is contributing, instead of just arguing and blaming the government. But the government should take the first step in achieving this. With this, not only it increases blissfulness of tourists but also increases economy of the country.

International travel has become more affordable and many countries are opening their doors to increase the number of tourists. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Many countries are receiving increasing numbers of tourists because of the affordability of travelling abroad. This essay will analyse the benefits and drawbacks of this issue. 

The main downside of tourism is the environmental impact particularly on areas of natural beauty. Many tourists are drawn to the most stunning areas of a country, however, they rarely consider the long-term effects of their visit and contribute to environmental pollution. One of the most well-known examples of this phenomenon is the Great Barrier Reef which is slowly being destroyed due to tourists touching the corals. Another downside related to the development of tourism is inflated prices in tourist hotspots, which can make it unaffordable for locals to live there. This issue is more serious in developing countries where the local restaurants often raise their prices to account for the higher purchasing power of tourists. 

Despite the issues associated with tourism, there are plenty of upsides including from a financial and cultural perspective. Regarding the economy, tourists provide an economic boost to regions by spending huge amounts of money and providing jobs for local people. To illustrate this point, the tourism industry in Thailand accounts for almost 20% of their GDP and without this industry, their economic development would suffer.. From a cultural perspective, people visiting other countries has the potential to reduce racism and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures. If travellers spend more time learning about different religions or customs, they may well improve their tolerance and understanding which is crucial in creating harmony in the world. 

To sum up, the rise of tourism has contributed to certain environmental and financial issues for popular destinations. Conversely, there are potentially significant economic benefits for host countries and the opportunity to develop a more harmonious world. Tourism is inevitable therefore tourist destinations should aim to enhance the positives and reduce the detrimental effects.

1) There are a few different types of advantage and disadvantage questions. This particular one only asks for the advantages and disadvantages. Others ask for an opinion or whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Each version requires a slightly different strategy. 

I’ll write an articles about this soon, but to summarise just follow the instructions of the question. 

2) Look at the way advantages and disadvantages have been paraphrased. 

3) Give specific examples to demonstrate your points. 

4) The question asks for advantages (plural) and disadvantages (plural). My best advice is to give 2 of each. If you give more than 2, it can easily turn into a list, which will lower your task achievement score. 

5) Conclude with a summary of your ideas and possibly a recommendation.

Many individuals think that foreign tourism brings negative effects to their countries. There are several reasons for such negative attitude towards international travelers. However, a couple of solutions could be adopted to handle this situation, as will now be discussed.

International tourists are often criticized for their contribution to the environmental degradation. It has continuously been noticed that they throw rubbish in their surroundings irresponsibly, which increases the amount of litter everywhere, despite all attempts to reduce waste produced by the local community. This contributes to water, air and soil contamination.

Furthermore, foreign tourism has a harmful influence on traditional customs and indigenous practices of host countries because many tourists are careless and insensitive the emotions and feelings of local residents. For instance, in India, some foreign travelers wear inappropriate clothes or expose too much of skin when they visit sacred places, which leads to some negative attitude and the local public.

However, this situation can be improved different solutions which could be handled by the government. The government should explain the benefits of international tourism which contributes to the development of local . They not only spend money in shops and restaurants but also create jobs in service industries, and this aspect could be publicized. Additionally, the government should increase the awareness among the foreigners through different media such as roadside billboards and advertisements, and tourists should be encouraged to get rid of rubbish correctly.

In conclusion, the inhospitable feeling that the local people have for international tourists can be explained in many ways. However, in my opinion, the government’s involvement is essential to change the negative attitude by citing various advantages of international tourism to their country and raising awareness among tourists in order to protect local habitats.

This essay covers the entire task topic by exploring both reasons for negative attitude towards international tourism and some possible actions to change it. The writer explains why locals may resent international tourists and suggests what steps can be taken to transform the way people feel about foreigners in their country. The information is well-organised by the use of paragraphing, and the writer moves from one idea to the next effortlessly, with the help of linking words. A wide range of vocabulary is used, including less common words such as “degradation”,”inhospitable”, “habitat”, “awareness” and “sacred”. Instances of inaccurate word choice are rare, and even these slips don’t cause difficulty for the reader. Overall, this looks like a Band 8 essay.
