Book Review: You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay
In her ninety years young, Louise Hay has transformed millions of lives with her simple message: “What you think and what you believe is what will come true for you. Your thoughts create your life.”
She is absolutely correct!
You Can Heal Your Life by powerhouse teacher and lecturer, Louise Hay, is a profound eye-opener and one of my favorite books of all time because it is a life changer! Louise explains thoroughly how every thought that we think in the present creates our future. She discusses how guilt, criticism, and resentment are very damaging patterns that cause a state of disease in our bodies and how releasing these patterns will heal us. She tells the story of her fight with cancer and how she healed herself without conventional medicine (including chemotherapy or radiation) but instead used alternative healing methods, incorporated new beliefs, and released anger and resentment from a horrific childhood.
Although I do not agree with some of Louise Hay’s conclusions, I do believe without a doubt that we are what we think, or in other words, what we think in the present does create our future. I have lived it: Having been ignorant of how the mind works in the past, I created a difficult life; however, when I worked to eliminate the untrue beliefs and thoughts I had for years and replaced them with the truth, I created and lived a better life.
Having recently read You Can Heal Your Life and after incorporating Louise’s suggestions, I have seen positive changes in myself and in my life, once again! The most important lesson that Louise teaches is how to accept and love ourselves wholly.
I highly recommend You Can Heal Your Life by pioneer Louise Hay for anyone who is struggling with understanding why your life never improves or for anyone interested in holistic health, metaphysics, or living an authentic, beautiful life. Her suggestions do work and they will change your life!

Book review: You can heal your life by Louise Hay
Louise Hay first published You Can Heal Your Life in 1984, when she was aged 55, and it is still in print to this day. This is a great self-help book, with a metaphysical underpinning. Louise Hay has also written a number of other books including Heal Your Body , Meditations to Heal Your Life and The Power Is Within You . She has sold over 40 million books worldwide. Louise Hay founded Hay House publishing in the mid-1980s, she passed away in August 2017 at the age of 90 years.
You Can Heal Your Life is written in clear and simple language. It´s the type of book that you can pick up and read sections or sit down and read all the way through. It´s more than a self-help book that might tell us to simply focus on positive thinking and all will be well. Louise challenges to go beyond “positive” thinking, to look deep inside, to question ourselves and our beliefs about oneself, to bring about positive change. There are some useful exercises to complete as you work through the book to help you do this.
Core messages from You Can Heal Your Life
At the core of this insightful book is the belief that our thoughts create our lives – what we think about ourselves becomes our reality. She believes that through our habitual thoughts we create our illnesses, so therefore we can create our own health. Louise asserts that by looking within and understanding ourselves we can come to find our own inner power for healing. Following this logic, we can choose what we think, so therefore we can create a new, healthy, reality.
The book is in four parts. In part 1 Louise explains her philosophy about health, disease and the links to our habitual thoughts and beliefs. Part 2 is “A session with Louise”, where she looks at what the problem is and what you can do about it to help yourself. In part 3 you “Put these ideas to work” and in the final part of the book Louise shares her story. In 1977 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer, which she believed stemmed from childhood resentment about abuse. Louise cured herself without medical intervention and she shares this story to give you inspiration. The book also includes many stories from people Louise has worked with to help to illustrate her points.
Affirmations
Hay uses affirmations to help to bring our thoughts back to health. Affirmations are short positive statements in the present tense. You say these statements to yourself a number of times throughout the day. Louise Hay believes that affirmations can help to override the negative mind-chatter that we might otherwise focus on. If you start to focus inside you might start to notice that we can have an internal monologue running throughout the day. Often this monologue is negative or focusing on things that are not working or are somehow “wrong”. By using affirmations we can choose to focus on a more healthy message.
Mirror work
One exercise that I think is powerful to practice is standing in front of a mirror and looking at yourself – in the eyes – whilst saying something positive or healthy to yourself. If you find this difficult Louise helps to explain why and what you can do.
Health issues
In the second half of the book (chapter 15) Louise lists many common health conditions, ranging from bad breath to callouses, heart disease, HIV, depression and menopause. She lists what she believes are the thoughts or beliefs underlying these conditions and then provides us with some simple affirmations to help to change their beliefs. For example, for depression Louise suggests that the probable cause is hopelessness, an anger that you feel you do not have the right to have. Her suggested affirmation is “I now go beyond other people´s fears and limitations. I create my life”. For more tips on how to help yourself if you experience depression, read this months article here .
Personal note
I came across Louise Hay´s books many years ago when I first started exploring the links between my thoughts and my health. Some of the ideas in the book were challenging for me to accept at first. But I worked through the exercises and it helped to bring understanding and compassion towards myself (and others). You Can Heal Your Life has been a source I return to often, for myself, my family and friends and also for our guests here at the retreat, if they are interested in exploring this area.
Throughout the book there are some lovely affirmations and passages to read and use. “All is well in my world” is one phrase that I find really helpful, particularly when I´m experiencing something that is challenging me! I find that this phrase reminds me to step away slightly from the challenge and remember that, even though I might be finding something difficult, there is also support around and good in my life.
You can heal your life
The fact that this book is still in print is testimony to the useful content contained within and the fact it is so easy to read and apply.
You can purchase You Can Heal Your Life from all major booksellers and it is also available in Kindle or as an audio book. It has been translated into many different languages.

Book Review: You Can Heal Your Life
- November 1, 2011
It’s a new month, a clean slate to make miracles happen. I don’t know why, but there’s something about a new month that just feels… clean. I can start over, leave the mistakes in the past, move forward. (This post contains an affiliate link! You buy something, I get a small percentage, thanks for supporting Blessing Manifesting!)
Each month I pick a word to embrace for the month. This month’s word is “healing”. I’ve realized that there are some past hurts that are still hurting. It’s frustrating to think that issues are in the past, neatly packed away, and then suddenly there they are, all over again.
We all have work to do, and that’s okay.
Today’s book review is a book that I will be picking up again soon and diving into the comforting wisdom of the pages . You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L. Hay will probably be one of the most transformational books that you will ever read. This book is all about the power of positive thinking. It is amazing.
As I wrote about in another post entitled Forgiveness , this book was monumental in helping me to find forgiveness for the people in my life that had hurt me and to let go of resentment. It also helped start me on the path to thinking about myself in a positive way.
The exercises and the affirmations in this book are completely life changing. I would definitely recommend this book, especially to someone who is wanting to change their negative thinking. I’ve been there.
I know how easy it is to slip into the vortex of ‘everything sucks and nothing in your life is ever going to go right’.
That choice is yours, ya know?
The most important thing that I have learned from this book would have to be that we can choose our own thoughts. It’s true, it’s hard, sometimes nearly impossible it seems, but we have the choice to think good things. Since reading this book, when I have negative thoughts I know that I can turn them around. I can think something differently if I want to. Sometimes I want to embrace the positivity and other times I want to allow myself to feel the sadness, there’s nothing wrong with that.
Life is about experiencing all emotions.
You Can Heal Your Life will reveal all of the things you dislike about yourself, your life, and the way you see others. Then it will help you change those things one thing at a time. Just because you believe, or were taught, that you were unworthy of love, doesn’t mean it’s true. Discover your own truth.
Each chapter has tons of exercises and affirmations. If you are ready to “do the work” this book will help you get there. Release your limiting beliefs, let go of resentment, be grateful, give forgiveness. Begin to heal. The thread that is woven throughout this book is Love Yourself , that is the magic wand that will fix things.
Love for yourself will make you healed and whole.
One of my favorite exercises in this book, aside from the one about forgiveness, is the Mirror. You take a mirror, look into it, and say “I love and accept you exactly as you are.” I would do this before I went to bed as a little daily ritual. After awhile, I wasn’t just saying that I loved myself. I was telling myself how beautiful I was, praising myself for that awesome thing I accomplished that day, how wonderfully silly and amazing and beautiful I was. It became a daily dialogue of all the things that I loved about myself.
Today without hesitation I can tell you this:
I love myself. I adore myself, and I am an amazing, awesome, human being.

"Sometimes I want to embrace the positivity and other times I want to allow myself to feel the sadness, there's nothing wrong with that."
I really dig this concept about embracing all the emotions. And really, embracing YOURSELF no matter the emotions your feeling. Not beating yourself up when you're feeling less than positive. I think I could use this sort of medicine in my own life.
@ Lacey Wright It took me a long time to realize that it was "okay" to be sad. I began to think that if I was sad then I was doing something wrong. It's all about balance!
This book saved me and I still look to it when I need to!
We were just talking about this one. That's awesome much love an light.

- Book Review: You can heal your life by Louise Hay
This book has been recommended to me by multiple people over the past few years. Though I had purchased it last year, it was only around 3 weeks back that I did start reading. The trigger was a video clip from a podcast where actress Vidya Balan spoke about how she faced hormonal imbalances and PCOD. One point she mentioned was that all hormonal imbalances (including PCOD) faced by women stem from thought patterns of rejection of the feminine nature. That's when she linked the concept of mind-body connection to this book.
As I flipped through the pages of this book, I came across a 60-page table that listed various physical ailments, the probable cause linked to our mind, thought or behavior, and affirmations for new thought patterns. I looked up some of the ailments and the causes that either I or my family members have faced in the past and it was such an eye-opener. And it made so much sense.
The philosophy behind this book can be summed up in these two lines:
"We are each responsible for all our experiences". "Every thought we think is creating our future".
The author talks about how our thoughts are linked to our beliefs and how our beliefs are shaped by parents and childhood experiences. She emphasizes that the point of power is ALWAYS in the present moment and we can take charge of the thoughts we are thinking now that would shape our future.
She then provides a comprehensive process to unravel our thoughts, identify the source of our beliefs, understand our resistance, and then make the required change in our thinking patterns through affirmations, journaling, meditations, and mirror exercises.
There were a lot of interesting observations while I read the first section. For eg,
When we affirm " I approve of myself " in front of a mirror, those aspects that we don't approve of ourselves yet arise from our subconscious.
This line felt so relevant to me - " The more you dwell on what you don't want, the more of it you create ". Louise states that affirmations are meant to focus on "What I want" in a positive tone and present tense, as they plant a seed in our subconscious to manifest.
The second section focuses on taking these ideas to practice in different areas of life - work, relationships, wealth, and body.
As I finished reading, 3 questions came up:
- If we are responsible for every experience, what about situations like childhood trauma, abuse, or loss of loved ones? Past-life actions(Karma) can be a possible explanation for the same but this isn't talked about in this book
- As we start to explore and work on each and every thought, we might end up in an analysis-paralysis state that could lead us to self-blame. There is a very fine line between self-acceptance and self-blame and too much analysis can make that line blurred.
- The correlation of physical ailment with the probable thought pattern can also be interpreted in reverse logic. What if I experience a certain negative thought now? If I know that this thought might lead to a certain ailment in the future, won't that cause fear? Won't that fear itself lead to planting the seed in the subconscious?
This book has some powerful ideas and practices that will help us understand our repeated patterns and behaviors. But I also feel that some part of it has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
