CPUT Postgraduate Masters and Doctoral funding

The cput postgraduate bursary application 2023  ( masters and doctoral only)  is now open..

  Eligibility criteria: Full-time students primarily and part-time students with special circumstances may apply. When awarding bursaries the following criteria will be used as well.

• 93% South African students and permanent residents, 7% international students.
• 50/50 gender split as well as consideration to persons with disabilities.
• The amount given to successful applicants will be based on the registration fee + study fee + housing fee of the student in 2023.

Many Ph.D. programs are fully funded.

Students interested in graduate research in various fields, from public health and English to computer science and engineering, have numerous options for Ph.D. programs that offer full funding. These programs typically provide waived tuition and fees and an annual stipend. Some also offer health insurance and other benefits. Gaining admittance into these small cohorts can be highly competitive, and the programs can be time-consuming . Here are 30 fully funded Ph.D. programs at U.S. colleges and universities. Keep in mind this is not a comprehensive list – there are others out there.

• Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago

Anthropology Ph.D. students at the University of Chicago can receive funding for up to eight years of study, assuming they are in good standing at the university. During that time, they will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus health insurance and a living stipend – which equated to $33,000 for the 2022-2023 school year – and can apply for external fellowships.

Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health at Harvard University (MA)

Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston offers a Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health that aims to provide students with expertise in disease prevention and treatment. This program includes tuition, a stipend and health insurance for five years as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress. International students receive the same benefits. Current research in the school's laboratories involves diseases like AIDS, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, malaria and tuberculosis.

• Ph.D. in business at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Students enrolled in the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can study a range of fields like organization studies, accounting and information technology. Those pursuing a Ph.D. will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus a monthly stipend of $4,267, capped at $51,204. They will also receive medical insurance, new laptops at the beginning of their first and fourth years of study and $4,500 over five years for conference travel expenses.

Ph.D. in business at Rice University (TX)

At the Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business in Texas, students enjoy full financial assistance upon admission to the Ph.D. program. Aiming to prepare students to teach in fields like accounting, finance, organizational behavior and strategic management, the program provides students with a research or teaching assistantship. Students receive a tuition waiver and a $40,000 annual stipend contingent on making satisfactory academic progress and maintaining full-time student status.

• Ph.D. in business at the University of Iowa

The University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business offers Ph.D. degrees in fields such as accounting, economics, business analytics and marketing. The college says it provides full funding to "virtually all admitted students." This includes tuition and fees, a minimum nine-month stipend of about $20,000 with annual adjustments and comprehensive health insurance covered at 90%. Some departments offer funding for research presentations at major conferences, summer fellowships and paid time off for independent research.

Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Cornell University (NY)

According to Cornell University 's website, all students admitted to the chemical engineering Ph.D. program at the New York school receive a full tuition waiver, health insurance and a stipend. This funding can come from a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or fellowship, and full stipends are granted for nine months with the likelihood of additional aid in the summer.

Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Columbia University (NY)

Students enrolled in Columbia University 's Ph.D. program in clinical psychology at the Teachers College in New York receive fully funded tuition and a $25,000 stipend annually for three years. The stipend also carries into a student's fourth year. These doctoral fellows "may be expected to serve" as graduate teaching or research assistants. Students typically complete the mentor-matched program, which includes a full-year internship, in five to seven years.

Ph.D. in computer science at Brown University (RI)

Brown University 's Ph.D. students in computer science have access to "full financial support while completing the degree," plus the option to take classes at nearby schools without incurring additional costs, according to the school's website. In fact, doctoral students in any program at the Rhode Island university are guaranteed five years of financial support, which includes tuition remission, a stipend, health services fees and a subsidy for health insurance.

Georgetown University |

Ph.D. in computer science at Georgetown University (DC)

Georgetown University 's Ph.D. program in computer science provides scholarships and assistantships that cover full tuition at the Washington, D.C., school and include a stipend and health insurance for the first five years. Once enrolled in the program, students must complete the Apprenticeship in Teaching Program and ultimately write and defend a full research dissertation in a seminar open to the public.

Ph.D. in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis

Ph.D. students in the computer science or computer engineering program at Washington University in St. Louis receive full tuition support and health insurance. According to the university's website: "As a doctoral candidate, you will also receive a generous stipend to cover living expenses and a new, high-end Apple laptop computer. This support is guaranteed as you continue to make satisfactory progress towards your degree." Doctoral students may also qualify for one of three fellowships.

• Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison

Incoming Ph.D. students at the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin—Madison are guaranteed full funding for the duration of the time that they are expected on campus, according to the university's department of counseling psychology website. Doctoral students also receive a benefits package that includes health insurance. Funding may come from financial aid, fellowships, assistantships and/or traineeships.

Emory University |

Ph.D. in economics at Emory University (GA)

Students enrolled in the economics Ph.D. program at Emory University typically receive full funding, according to the Georgia university's website. The stipend provided to students is $36,376 per year for five years, starting in fall 2023, and the full tuition scholarship is worth $70,200 per year. Funding for admitted students also includes a $4,370 annual subsidy that covers 100% of a student's cost of health insurance. First-year students have no stipend-related work requirements.

• Ph.D. in education at New York University

New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development offers more than 30 degree programs. Many can be pursued on campus or online. Ph.D. degrees are offered in areas like developmental psychology, educational leadership and childhood education. Full-time NYU Steinhardt Ph.D. students are eligible for a funding package that includes an annual stipend – $32,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year – tuition coverage for required coursework and student health insurance for five years.

Stanford University's Graduate School of Education allows students numerous fellowship and assistantship opportunities at the California school, along with a "five-year funding guarantee that provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary, and covers the standard cost of attendance," the program website reads. At the Graduate School of Education, doctoral students can choose from a range of academic areas like curriculum studies and teacher education, and developmental and psychological sciences.

• Ph.D. in education at the University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education provides full funding to Ph.D. students as part of a fellowship and research apprenticeship package. This funding includes a living stipend, health insurance and coverage of tuition and fees for up to four years if the student maintains full-time enrollment. Some students may also qualify for additional summer funding.

• Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor

Doctoral students in engineering at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor can choose from numerous areas of specialization under umbrella categories like aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, macromolecular science and engineering, and robotics. All engineering doctoral students are guaranteed full funding, a monthly living stipend and health insurance. The exact amount can vary, according to the program's website, and funding comes from a range of sources, including graduate student instructor positions and fellowships.

Annually, doctoral students studying English at Boston University receive a stipend plus full tuition, fees and basic health insurance. This funding is guaranteed for at least five years, with two of those years typically free from teaching requirements. Funding can sometimes be extended up to seven years, according to the university's website, but it's not guaranteed. Students may also apply for various prizes, fellowships and short-term research and travel grants.

Applicants to the Ph.D. in English program at the University of California—Los Angeles are automatically considered for various funding options. A six-year funding package includes "a minimum of two years of full fellowship, four years of summer stipend support and up to four years of teaching assistantships," according to the school website. Beyond tuition, fees and health insurance are also covered.

American University offers doctoral students in its international relations program who do not have external funding a renewable four-year Dean's Fellowship that is contingent on making satisfactory academic progress. The fellowship includes the cost of tuition, fees and a stipend that must be earned via a part-time role as a teaching or research assistant. Students also must "demonstrate competency in a modern foreign language" before graduating.

• Ph.D. in management at Binghamton University—SUNY

All students admitted to the interdisciplinary management Ph.D. program at the Binghamton University—SUNY School of Management in New York receive a combination of a full-tuition scholarship and a teaching or research assistantship for each academic year, up to four years. This STEM-designated business doctoral degree prepares students for careers in academia and work in the public and private sectors, and has a student-faculty ratio of 1-to-1, according to the university's website.

Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Duke University (NC)

Doctoral students at Duke University in North Carolina studying materials science and engineering generally receive full tuition, a stipend and fee support for the first five years. Students also receive up to six years of health insurance if they are on the university's student medical insurance plan. The doctoral program aims to help students publish with a faculty adviser and develop research skills, with the opportunity to present research at professional conferences.

Ph.D. in nursing at Johns Hopkins University (MD)

The School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland provides most doctoral students with three fully funded years of study. Available financial aid includes graduate assistantships, targeted fellowships and nursing-specific funding. The university aims to "advance the theoretical foundation of nursing practice and healthcare delivery" with the degree, its website reads. "By graduation, most Hopkins nurse scholars have been awarded grants that continue their research and set them well on their way to a successful career."

• Ph.D. in nursing at the University of Virginia

All students admitted to the University of Virginia 's Ph.D. in Nursing program are eligible for four years of scholarship funding to cover tuition, insurance and fees, as well as annual stipends. To receive certain aid, students must work 10 hours per week as a graduate teaching assistant. With a heavy research focus, students can expect courses in qualitative, quantitative and historical research, and will have to submit a research proposal for peer review.

Ph.D. in nursing at Yale University (CT)

At Yale University in Connecticut, the School of Nursing offers full funding to its Ph.D. students. They receive a monthly stipend for four years in addition to paid tuition and health care. The program allows students to gain in-depth knowledge in a particular area of study. Every incoming Ph.D. student gets paired with a faculty adviser "whose area of expertise and active research most closely matches with the student’s scholarly interest," according to the school's website.

University of Minnesota |

• Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program to study psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities are guaranteed full funding for five years as long as they maintain satisfactory performance and degree progress. This funding includes full-time tuition, a nine-month stipend and subsidized health insurance. Funding comes from some combination of teaching assistantships, traineeships, research assistantships and fellowships. Students in the program can specialize in areas like cognitive and brain sciences, industrial-organizational psychology and social psychology.

Matt Cashore | University of Notre Dame

Ph.D. within the Romance languages and literatures department at the University of Notre Dame (IN)

University of Notre Dame doctoral students who focus on French and Francophone studies, Iberian and Latin American studies or Italian studies are guaranteed five years of funding. Funding includes a full scholarship, including tuition and fees, plus a stipend and health insurance. Anyone who completes the Ph.D. degree requirements at the Indiana university within five years will automatically receive a one-year postdoctoral fellowship via the university's 5+1 Program. Fellows will have a teaching load limited to one course per semester.

Ph.D. in social work at Bryn Mawr College (PA)

Students admitted to Bryn Mawr College 's Ph.D. program in social work receive full tuition waivers and "substantial stipends" toward living expenses. The Pennsylvania college's website says: "Consistent with our model, all Ph.D. students are funded equally, and do not compete for basic financial support during coursework." The program's cohorts typically include only three or four students each year. According to the college, it awarded the first Ph.D. degree in social work in the U.S. in 1920.

Vanderbilt University |

Ph.D. in special education at Vanderbilt University (TN)

Funding is guaranteed for all admitted doctoral students enrolled in the special education Ph.D. program at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. This includes full tuition, a "competitive" monthly stipend and health insurance for up to four years. Students may also be nominated for additional honor scholarships and fellowships. Areas of focus within the Ph.D. program include high-incidence disabilities and early childhood education.

Ph.D. in theatre and drama at Northwestern University (IL)

This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Illinois combines coursework in humanities, social science and the visual arts. The program's students receive a five-year full-tuition scholarship plus an annual living stipend. Ph.D students enrolling at this program in fall 2022 will receive a living stipend of at least $36,960 during the 2023-2024 school year. Stipend amounts may change from year to year. Students can apply for subsidies to facilitate conference travel and summer language study.

• Ph.D. in women, gender and sexuality studies at University of Maryland

At the University of Maryland 's Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Ph.D. students without a master's degree usually have five years of guaranteed funding. Those with a master's degree usually are funded four years, with awards stemming from a mix of departmental fellowships and graduate teaching assistantships. Since the program's establishment in 1999, the department has granted 36 Ph.Ds, according to UMD's website.

PhD Funding and Benefit Packages

Charles river campus.

Boston University’s PhD programs on the Charles River Campus subscribe to a full funding model. This system guarantees all PhD students in good standing five years of stipend support, 100% tuition scholarship, and a health insurance credit. This approach reflects BU’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of researchers across the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and engineering. Stipend level minimums vary by PhD program, but for the 2024-25 academic year, minimums will range from $27,318 for 8 months to $40,977 for 12 months. Students receive health insurance (the SHIP basic plan) through Aetna Student Health. Full tuition and student services fees are also covered for PhD students on the Charles River campus.

Medical Campus

PhD students in Graduate Medical Sciences (GMS) at Boston University’s School of Medicine and the School of Public Health (SPH) also enjoy a full-funding model. GMS and SPH PhD students receive a full tuition scholarship, are exempt from paying student fees, receive health insurance coverage as part of their support, and are entitled to an annual stipend. PhD Stipend Extensions for Students Impacted by the COVID Pandemic

Boston University believes it is crucial to ensure that current PhD students who have had their progress impeded by the pandemic are able to complete their degrees. While individual PhD programs and the schools/colleges in which they are housed are the primary source of academic and financial support for PhD students, in rare circumstances, programs and schools/colleges may not have adequate resources to support all students whose progress has been hindered by the pandemic. For this reason, the Office of the Provost has established a fund to support PhD stipend extensions necessitated by this circumstance. Learn more about this funding opportunity and how to apply .

Please note that this program will end after the 2023-2024 academic year, concluding in early spring 2024 for logistical and operational purposes.

The Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CPGS) was established in 2009 to coordinate master’s and doctoral studies at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

The Centre facilitates postgraduate studies by connecting students with faculties, managing bursaries, and providing research support. We help with project planning, statistical analysis and software usage. Our seminars and workshops aid students and supervisors in research methods and statistics. Additionally, we monitor student progress and promote research expertise and bursaries to attract students locally and internationally. We aim to support academic excellence, elevate the university’s postgraduate profile and foster technology innovation through research.

Please be aware that most of the funding opportunities are highly competitive, and that application deadlines vary throughout the year. Most of the listings include hyperlinks for more information. African American Success Foundation, Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Fellowship (June Deadline) This grant provides financial support to students and professionals who conduct research to study African American success, particularly in the area of education. It is offered to encourage the building of the science of African American success by studying those attitudes and behaviors that cause people to attain academic success. Graduate students must be recommended by a faculty mentor who agrees to oversee the project and the submission of a publishable caliber paper upon completion. American Educational Research Association ( AERA ), Dissertation and Research Grants (November Deadline) The program supports research projects that are quantitative in nature, include the analysis of existing data from NCES, NSF or other federal agencies, and have U.S. education policy relevance. American Educational Research Association (AERA), AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Educational Research (November Deadline) The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Educational Research. International Education Research Foundation (IERF), Sepmeyer Research Grant Program (February & August Deadlines) IERF’s mission is to research and disseminate information on world educational systems and to facilitate the integration of individuals educated outside the United States into the U.S. educational environment and workforce. Grants up to $1,000 will be awarded. Each research grant proposal is evaluated on how well its project design and expected outcomes address the following criteria: supporting research for the evaluation of foreign academic credentials, promoting the integration of students, scholars and professionals holding non-US academic credentials into the United States, facilitating the publication and dissemination of the results of the research, and encouraging the exchange of information about the structure of educational systems and their corresponding credentials. International Research Foundation (TIRF) for English Language, Doctoral Dissertation Grants (April Deadline) Since 2002, TIRF has supported students completing their doctoral research on topics related to the foundation’s priorities. Each year, applicants who have been advanced to candidacy in legitimate PhD or EdD programs are invited to submit proposals for Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDGs). National Academy of Education, Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program (Applications Open August; October Deadline) The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $27,500 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, analysis, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world. New England Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals (NAGAP), Enrollment Management Research Grant The grant is designed to encourage emerging knowledge and understanding of the complexities of graduate enrollment management including all aspects of admissions and recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation in higher education. The Organization for Autism Research, Graduate Research Grant Program (February Deadline) Established in 2004, the grant program is intended to encourage and support students conducting research pursuant to graduate and postgraduate studies in disciplines related to assessment, intervention, and support of learners with autism spectrum disorders and their families. The program offers grant awards of $2,000 for students who are doctoral candidates or post-doctoral students. Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) (Rolling Application; Through Financial Aid Office) The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to serve in a high-need field or an elementary school  or secondary school that serves low-income families for a period of four complete academic years. The PDK Educational Foundation, Phi Delta Kappa International Graduate Fellowship (June Deadline)

The PDK Educational Foundation endowed scholarship program supports students who are pursuing advanced degrees in education at the masters, specialist, and doctoral levels. When considering a graduate degree program, affordability and flexibility are essential factors to consider. We acknowledge that pursuing a graduate degree is an investment in your future career.

PhD Research Assistantships

PhD students can secure a research assistantship that covers tuition and technology fees, and provides a stipend for living expenses. This assistantship can last for up to five years, contingent upon satisfactory progress toward degree completion. Students awarded a research assistantship must dedicate around 20 hours per week to teaching and research activities in addition to their coursework, which is an integral part of their graduate education.

As a full-time PhD student, you will collaborate on research projects and engage in research under the guidance of faculty members. If you enter the program with your own funding, you can work with your advisor to tailor your research according to your interests within the constraints of your funding.

Students are responsible for covering expenses such as health insurance, activity, and transportation fees, books, and course supplies.

CMU Rales Fellow Program

The CMU Rales Fellows Program eliminates financial obstacles for underrepresented STEM leaders, inspiring progress and enabling over 80 annual fellows in advanced STEM education through partnerships like the Ron Brown Scholar Program and the National GEM Consortium.

If you are interested in applying for this funding, you will need to complete a RALES Fellowship application in tandem with your CEE application. Please see RALES' website for application deadlines and program details.

GEM Fellowship Program

The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (GEM), a nonprofit organization, was formed to help assist underrepresented groups (African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans) at the master's and doctoral levels in engineering and physical science. The College of Engineering is pleased to support the GEM Fellowship program by offering a generous award to GEM MS Engineering Fellowship Program recipients.  A few select applicants will be eligible for an award that augments the GEM contribution to the fellowship and will help to defray your overall cost of attendance in the MS program at CMU.

The application cycle for this program is July 1 – November 15.

Italian Government Scholarships 2024-2025 - Applications are now available for MAECI Scholarships for Masters and PhD

• Not having to pay enrollment and tuition fees.
• Health and medical/accident insurance provided by MAECI.
• A total of 9000 euros given to students, split into 3 payments:
• The first payment is 4500 euros.
• The second payment is 2500 euros.
• The third and last payment is 2000 euros.
• To apply for a master’s degree, you need to have finished a bachelor’s degree.
• You must be 28 years old or younger when you apply for the master’s program.
• If you're applying for a PhD program, you must be under 30 years old when you apply.
• You must show your English proficiency with an IELTS or another language certificate.
• Apply online on the “Study in Italy” website.
• You don’t need to get admitted to the university first.
• The process for the MAECI scholarship and university admission is different.
• For the MAECI Scholarship, apply through the special online platform by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
• After getting the MAECI scholarship, you must also apply for admission to your preferred program at an Italian public university.

Graduation Deadlines

Master's students must submit to the Graduate School a Candidacy Application for an Advanced Degree . Applications follow a workflow process and must be approved by the academic department before they are directed to the Graduate School.

Graduate students who have not already done so must apply online to graduate through buff portal on the “apply for graduation” card in order to have the degree awarded in August. This is required even though there is no university-wide ceremony. PhD students must enter their dissertation title as part of the online graduation application; you may update the title through the portal until this date. This title will appear on your transcript after your degree is awarded.

Estimated Tuition

The estimated cost of the Public Administration program is $1,660 per unit for the 2024-2025 academic year, with a minimum of 8 units required to be completed each academic year. Students typically take an average of 18 units in the first academic year and 20 units in the second academic year. A total of 38 units are required for the degree. Program fees are subject to adjustment annually, and the number of required units may vary based on enrollment status. Program Scholarships

We offer a limited number of merit-based scholarships to incoming students on a competitive basis for up to $10,000 to highly selective applicants to support their first-year study in the program. All applicants, both U.S. and international students, are considered for these scholarships when the applications are reviewed. There is no separate application for this type of financial assistance. Applications received before the Priority Date will receive preferred scholarship consideration.

The Dean's Scholarship

The Dean’s Scholarship grants recipients compensation for research and for conference travel. Additional benefits include the Dean's Scholar kickoff and reception, connection with other Dean's Scholars and with leaders across the college, and the chance to serve as program representatives to USF donors and Development initiatives.

To be considered for the $15,000 Dean's Scholarship towards their first year of tuition, students must apply by the program's priority deadline.

Double Dons Scholarship

USF Alumni and current students can be awarded the USF Double Dons Scholarship upon admission. The scholarship covers 20% of the program tuition, and may not be stacked with other USF scholarship awards. Exceptions may apply. Double Dons on MyUSF

On-Campus Student Employment

Enrolled students can apply for student employment opportunities on campus to earn additional income towards tuition or day-to-day expenses. International students are eligible to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the semester and up to 35 hours during the summer period and intersession.

Non-USF Financial Aid

Applicants can also seek out non-USF financial aid to fund their graduate education. 

Public & Administration Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to select MPA students that show exceptional leadership in government service and community management.

Lieutenant Barbara Hammerman Memorial Scholarship

Lieutenant Barbara Hammerman served the citizens of San Mateo with distinction for 21 years as a member of the San Mateo Police Department. She championed the rights and protection of the vulnerable in our society. Barbara was the trailblazer who fought courageously for women’s rights. She was the first openly gay officer hired by the San Mateo Police Department, the first woman in the County to ride on the motorcycle unit, the first to establish random Child Seat Restraint Checkpoints at schools, and the first to establish drunk-driving checkpoints in the City. She consulted high schools on drug trends, trained probation officers on signs and symptoms of drug abuse, and was the first narcotic's detective in San Mateo's history to receive the prestigious Narcotics Officer of the Year award. Barbara received her Bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement Leadership from the University of San Francisco, and her Master’s in Leadership from St. Mary’s College. This award is given in Barbara’s name because of her commitment to leadership and to serving others.

Merit scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated superior academic and/or professional achievements, and outstanding talent or commitment to extracurricular activities, community service, leadership, entrepreneurship. Merit Scholars should also fully embody the USF mission to change the world for the better. Buckley Public Service Scholars Program Lead Graduate Assistant 2024-2025

The Buckley Public Service Scholars program (BPSS) Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS) provides a framework for Carolina undergraduate students committed to making a positive impact through service. BPSS challenges participants to expand their understanding of service, connect academic and community-based experiences and build their capacity to help effect change. While completing the program components, participants build portfolios reflecting their learning and unique experiences throughout North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Launched in 2003, BPSS has connected students with service and special opportunities for leadership development and community engagement. Since the program’s inception, more than 8,000 students have participated, contributing 2.3 million hours of service.

Lead Graduate Assistant for BPSS

The lead graduate assistant for BPSS will work with program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Responsibilities include:

• Facilitate BPSS orientation sessions with support of an undergraduate student leader
• Assist in the selection, training and hiring of 6-9 BPSS graduate assistants who offer skills trainings and respond to graduating senior reflections
• Support SMART Mentoring program as needed
• Coordinate the senior reflection review process for BPSS graduates in the Fall and Spring semesters
• Organize and conduct BPSS outreach events (e.g. tabling in the Union) to promote BPSS
• Assist in assessment and evaluation of BPSS program
• Monitor and respond to student emails about the program
• Review, track, and approve senior portfolios on GivePulse to confirm that they have met program requirements; follow-up with seniors, as needed
• Assist with special opportunities offered by the program (graduation in May), as needed
• Provide supplemental support and publicity for BPSS programs

Enrollment in a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate program required. This position will hybrid with both in-person and remote options expected. Should have an interest in service-learning and civic engagement. Experience with nonprofit organizations, familiarity with group facilitation, program evaluation and student leadership development are preferred. The individual must enjoy working in a collaborative environment with undergraduate students, other graduate students, and professional staff. Excellent writing, computer and organizational skills are required. Experience working with diverse communities is preferred. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Four from MIT named 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholars

MIT senior Owen Dugan, graduate student Vittorio Colicci ’22, predoctoral research fellow Carine You ’22, and recent alumna Carina Letong Hong ’22 are recipients of this year’s Knight-Hennessy Scholarships. The competitive fellowship, now in its seventh year, funds up to three years of graduate studies in any field at Stanford University. To date, 22 MIT students and alumni have been awarded Knight-Hennessy Scholarships.

“We are excited for these students to continue their education at Stanford with the generous support of the Knight Hennessy Scholarship,” says Kim Benard, associate dean of distinguished fellowships in Career Advising and Professional Development. “They have all demonstrated extraordinary dedication, intellect, and leadership, and this opportunity will allow them to further hone their skills to make real-world change.”

Vittorio Colicci ’22

Vittorio Colicci, from Trumbull, Connecticut, graduated from MIT in May 2022 with a BS in aerospace engineering and physics. He will receive his master’s degree in planetary sciences this spring. At Stanford, Colicci will pursue a PhD in earth and planetary sciences at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He hopes to investigate how surface processes on Earth and Mars have evolved through time alongside changes in habitability. Colicci has worked largely on spacecraft engineering projects, developing a monodisperse silica ceramic for electrospray thrusters and fabricating high-energy diffraction gratings for space telescopes. As a Presidential Graduate Fellow at MIT, he examined the influence of root geometry on soil cohesion for early terrestrial plants using 3D-printed reconstructions. Outside of research, Colicci served as co-director of TEDxMIT and propulsion lead for the MIT Rocket Team. He is also passionate about STEM engagement and outreach, having taught educational workshops in Zambia and India.

Owen Dugan, from Sleepy Hollow, New York, is a senior majoring in physics. As a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, he will pursue a PhD in computer science at the Stanford School of Engineering. Dugan aspires to combine artificial intelligence and physics, developing AI that enables breakthroughs in physics and using physics techniques to design more capable and safe AI systems. He has collaborated with researchers from Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and DeepMind, and has presented his first-author research at venues including the International Conference on Machine Learning, the MIT Mechanistic Interpretability Conference, and the American Physical Society March Meeting. Among other awards, Dugan is a Hertz Finalist, a U.S. Presidential Scholar, an MIT Outstanding Undergraduate Research Awardee, a Research Science Institute Scholar, and a Neo Scholar. He is also a co-founder of VeriLens, a funded startup enabling trust on the internet by cryptographically verifying digital media.

Carina Letong Hong ’22

Carina Letong Hong, from Canton, China, is currently pursuing a JD/PhD in mathematics at Stanford. A first-generation college student, Hong graduated from MIT in May 2022 with a double major in mathematics and physics and was inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society. She then earned a neuroscience master’s degree with dissertation distinctions from the University of Oxford, where she conducted artificial intelligence and machine learning research at Sainsbury Wellcome Center’s Gatsby Unit. At Stanford Law School, Hong provides legal aid to low-income workers and uses economic analysis to push for law enforcement reform. She has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, served as an expert referee for journals and conferences, and spoken at summits in the United States, Germany, France, the U.K., and China. She was the recipient of the AMS-MAA-SIAM Morgan Prize for Outstanding Research, the highest honor for an undergraduate in mathematics in North America; the AWM Alice T. Schafer Prize for Mathematical Excellence, given annually to an undergraduate woman in the United States; the Maryam Mirzakhani Fellowship; and a Rhodes Scholarship.

Carine You ’22

Carine You, from San Diego, California, graduated from MIT in May 2022 with bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science and in mathematics. Since graduating, You has worked as a predoctoral research assistant with Professor Amy Finkelstein in the MIT Department of Economics, where she has studied the quality of Medicare nursing home care and the targeting of medical screening technologies. This fall, You will embark on a PhD in economic analysis and policy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She wishes to address pressing issues in environmental and health-care markets, with a particular focus on economic efficiency and equity. You previously developed audio signal processing algorithms at Bose, refined mechanistic models to inform respiratory monitoring at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics, and analyzed corruption in developmental projects in India at the World Bank. Through Middle East Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow, she taught computer science to Israeli and Palestinian students in Jerusalem and spearheaded an online pilot expansion for the organization. At MIT, she was named a Burchard Scholar.

UT to add 576 beds with new graduate student housing complex, boost housing scholarships

The University of Texas will move forward with a graduate student housing project that will bring 576 beds along with entertainment, dining and grocery options. The UT System Board of Regents on Thursday approved the university's proposal to build the project at 1900 Comal St.

The new development is the second phase of the university's plan to expand graduate student housing, UT President Jay Hartzell told the American-Statesman on Thursday. The new complex will be built near another new graduate student housing project UT plans to open in the fall with about 780 beds.

It will also be near UT's athletic facilities and will have five new beach volleyball courts, which will allow the UT women's team to host NCAA competitions.

The project is part of the university's commitment to establishing "high-quality affordable housing" and a strong sense of community for graduate students, which will help UT attract top talent, Hartzell said.

"When I got the job in 2020, this was on the drawing board," Hartzell said. "As a person who went to graduate school at UT, I get the need. And as the city's gotten more expensive, this is just one more thing we're trying to do to ensure students choose us."

Jim Davis, UT chief operating officer, said costs for the new graduate complex are still being estimated, and it is expected to open in 2027.

The new development will feature about 9,000 square feet of retail space and 3,000 square feet for dining, which will help support the athletic and East Campus communities, a university spokesperson said. With the latest project, UT will have about 2,250 graduate student beds available in three complexes.

The spokesperson said rental costs for the Phase Two housing units have not yet been determined but are expected to be at or below market value.

Davis said the two residential complexes are the university's first new graduate student housing projects in about 40 years.

What else is UT doing for student housing?

The university is also continuing its housing scholarship program in the upcoming school year after launching the program this year to help low- and middle-income students with on-campus housing costs. UT spent about $5 million to subsidize housing costs for about 3,200 on-campus students who qualified for UT's tuition assistance program, Texas Advance Commitment .

The university is increasing its investment in the program to $7.5 million to account for price increases and to serve more students, Hartzell said. Texas Advance Commitment 1 students can receive $1,800 to $2,300, and Texas Advance Commitment 2 students (those with higher family income levels) can receive $900 to $1,400.

In February, regents gave UT permission to begin negotiations to start building an estimated $145 million, 1,000-bed undergraduate student housing complex  in place of the Whitis Court residence hall, which has about 200 beds. This will be the first newly built undergraduate housing complex since 2007, though the university purchased Dobie Twenty21 with a capacity of almost 1,000 student residents in 2021.

With the new undergraduate and two new graduate student complexes, UT is on a path to add about 2,000 beds by 2027.

What does the UT System board's action mean?

The board's decision Thursday authorizes UT to enter into a private-public partnership agreement — the same process the two other new complexes underwent. The university will enter into a lease agreement with the 2033 Higher Education Development Foundation, a nonprofit that advises the university on real estate matters, that will then contract with a private developer for the property.

The regents also authorized the university to use the UT System's Revenue Financing System, which also is financing the undergraduate complex project.

Site permitting and design will start this summer. The design will be similar to the East Campus Graduate Apartments, Davis said.

Hartzell thanked the board for its approval of the project and said he hopes UT's increase of housing supply — with the new beds and scholarship support — will help students tackle rising living costs and choose to enroll at UT.

"It really pertains to this goal of trying to find more high-quality, affordable housing for our graduate students," Hartzell said. "And build a sense of community that has vibrancy to it."

Student receives NASA graduate fellowship

Washington State University graduate student Ian Wells has won a NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunities fellowship.

The highly competitive fellowship provides students with up to five years of support for early-stage space technology research as well as summer internships at one of NASA’s space centers. He is the fourth graduate student from WSU’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering to receive the fellowship.

“Ever since I visited the NASA Ames Research Center in high school, I’ve wanted to work for NASA,” said Wells. “That is now fully realized in developing optical analysis of liquid hydrogen rocket fuel.”

Originally from Boise, Idaho, Wells came to WSU as an undergraduate. Working in the Hydrogen Properties for Energy Research lab , he led a student team that built and demonstrated a prototype to clean lunar dust from spacesuits. With their idea to use a liquid nitrogen spray to clean off the dust, the group won the prestigious Artemis Award at NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-changing (BIG) Idea Challenge.

As part of the project, Wells, who has had a lifelong interest in photography, created images of tiny nitrogen and dust droplets, liquid nitrogen pools, and the movement of the droplets over surfaces. The images were shared widely in the media, including on the BBC and in Smithsonian Magazine.

While Wells’ undergraduate project used boiling liquid nitrogen to clean spacesuits, he wants to better understand the science behind how the nitrogen boils in order to full optimize the moondust-busting technology.

As part of his NASA fellowship, he will use optics to better understand the physics and mechanisms of boiling hydrogen to develop better rocket fuels.

Wells hopes to work at NASA after he completes his studies and continue studying optics, cryogenics, and extraterrestrial systems development.
