Understanding the Rating System on Amazon Prime

Before diving into the process of rating movies on Amazon Prime, it’s essential to understand how the rating system works. Amazon Prime uses a five-star rating scale to collect feedback from viewers. The scale ranges from one star (lowest) to five stars (highest). When you rate a movie, you are essentially assigning a score between one and five that reflects your opinion of the film.

While the rating system on Amazon Prime may seem straightforward, it’s important to note that there is more to it than simply assigning a number. The rating scale takes into account various factors, including the overall quality of the movie, the acting performances, the plot, and the production value. It’s not just about how much you personally enjoyed the film but also about its objective merits.

In addition to the star rating, Amazon Prime also allows users to provide written reviews. These reviews provide an opportunity to elaborate on your rating and offer detailed insights into your thoughts on the movie. Whether you loved or loathed a film, your review can help others understand why and make an informed decision about whether to watch it.

It’s important to be honest and fair when rating movies on Amazon Prime. Your rating should reflect your genuine opinion and assessment of the film. However, it’s also crucial to consider the impact your rating may have on other viewers. You have the power to influence their choices, so it’s important to approach the rating process with integrity and thoughtfulness.

Understanding the rating system on Amazon Prime allows you to engage more effectively with the platform and contribute to the community of movie enthusiasts. By providing accurate and balanced ratings, you can help create a reliable system that benefits all users and helps everyone find movies that align with their interests and preferences.

The Impact of Ratings on Movie Recommendations on Amazon Prime

Ratings play a crucial role in shaping the movie recommendations provided by Amazon Prime. The algorithm used by the platform takes into account the collective ratings and reviews of users to recommend movies to individual viewers. Here are some key aspects of how ratings impact movie recommendations on Amazon Prime:

1. Personalized Suggestions:

When you rate movies on Amazon Prime, the platform uses that information to generate personalized movie recommendations for you. The algorithm analyzes your previous ratings, along with other user ratings and viewing history, to understand your preferences and suggest movies that align with your interests.

2. Similarity-Based Recommendations:

Based on your ratings, Amazon Prime identifies movies similar to the ones you have enjoyed in the past. If you consistently rate movies from a particular genre positively, the algorithm will recommend more movies from that genre, taking your preferences into account.

3. Enhancing Discoverability:

By rating movies on Amazon Prime, you contribute to the discoverability of lesser-known films. If you rate a hidden gem positively, it has a higher chance of being recommended to other users who share similar tastes, thereby increasing its visibility and potential audience.

4. Filtering Out Irrelevant Content:

When you rate movies, Amazon Prime uses that information to filter out content that may not be of interest to you. If you consistently rate movies from a specific genre poorly, the algorithm will de-prioritize recommending movies from that genre, eliminating content that may not appeal to your preferences.

5. Influencing Popular Trending Section:

Your ratings contribute to the movies that appear in the popular trending section on Amazon Prime. Movies with high ratings and positive reviews have a higher chance of appearing in the top charts, attracting more viewers based on their popularity and positive feedback from the community.

6. Community Engagement:

Ratings foster a sense of community engagement on Amazon Prime. When users rate movies and provide reviews, they create a vibrant ecosystem where opinions are shared and discussed. This community engagement enhances the overall movie-watching experience and helps users discover new and engaging content.

By rating movies on Amazon Prime, you actively shape the recommendations provided to you and fellow viewers. Your ratings contribute to personalized suggestions, influence what appears in the popular trending section, and play a crucial role in filtering out irrelevant content. Embrace the power of ratings and reviews to create a dynamic and engaging movie-watching experience on Amazon Prime.

This enhances your viewing experience by helping you discover content that you are more likely to enjoy.

2. Sharing Your Opinions:

Through rating movies, you have a platform to express your opinions and reflect your perspective on various films. Your ratings provide an opportunity to engage with other viewers and contribute to the larger movie-watching community on Amazon Prime.

4. Supporting Lesser-Known Films:

Rating movies on Amazon Prime helps support lesser-known films and brings attention to hidden gems. Positive ratings contribute to the visibility and discoverability of these films, allowing them to reach a wider audience and gain recognition for their quality, even if they may not have received extensive marketing efforts.

5. Improving the Recommendation Algorithm:

As you rate movies, the recommendation algorithm on Amazon Prime continues to learn and improve. Your ratings help refine the system, making it more accurate and effective in suggesting movies that match your personal preferences. Common Mistakes to Avoid When Rating Movies on Amazon Prime

When rating movies on Amazon Prime, it is important to avoid common mistakes that can undermine the credibility and helpfulness of your ratings. Here are some common pitfalls to avoid:

1. Biased Ratings:

Avoid rating movies solely based on personal biases or preferences. Make an effort to provide objective and fair ratings that take into account the overall quality of the film, regardless of your personal opinions or preferences.

2. Rating Without Watching:

Do not rate movies without watching them in their entirety. Ratings should reflect your complete experience of the film, including its entirety and all relevant aspects, such as the plot, performances, and production value.

3. Inflated or Deflated Ratings:

Resist the temptation to artificially inflate or deflate ratings. Be honest and genuine in your assessments, as your ratings shape the recommendations and choices of other viewers. Manipulating ratings undermines the integrity of the system and compromises the accuracy of the recommendations.

4. Rating Based on External Factors:

Avoid rating movies based on factors unrelated to the film itself, such as personal biases, political affiliations, or controversies surrounding the actors or filmmakers. Focus on evaluating the movie’s merits and its objective qualities.

5. Allowing Previous Impressions to Influence Ratings:

Each movie should be evaluated on its own merits, without being overly influenced by previous works or expectations. Give the film a fair chance, approach it with an open mind, and base your rating solely on its individual qualities.

6. Repetitive or Generic Ratings:

Avoid providing repetitive or generic ratings that lack detailed insights. Instead of simply assigning a score, strive to provide specific observations and explanations of your rating, which can be more helpful to other viewers.

7. Ignoring Different Tastes and Preferences:

Respect that different viewers may have diverse tastes and preferences. Avoid dismissing or downplaying the value of a film simply because it does not align with your own preferences. Acknowledge the diversity within the community and provide ratings that cater to different viewing preferences.

8. Insufficient Justification in Reviews:

If you choose to write a review, make sure to provide sufficient justification for your rating. Simply stating that you liked or disliked a movie without explaining why may not be helpful to other viewers. Provide specific examples, insights, and reasoning behind your opinion to make your review more informative and valuable.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure that your ratings on Amazon Prime are accurate, informative, and helpful to other viewers. By providing fair and thoughtful ratings, you contribute to the integrity and reliability of the rating system on Amazon Prime.

Rating movies on Amazon Prime is not just a simple task but an important responsibility as well. Your ratings have a significant impact on the movie-watching experiences of other viewers and shape the recommendations provided by the platform. By following the tips provided in this article, you can write helpful and informative movie reviews that guide fellow users in making informed decisions about what to watch.

When rating movies on Amazon Prime, consider various factors such as the plot, performances, cinematography, and production value. Take into account the impact your ratings can have on other viewers and approach the rating process with integrity and thoughtfulness. Use clear and engaging language in your reviews, and avoid common mistakes, such as biased ratings or rating movies without watching them fully.

Your ratings and reviews contribute to a vibrant community of movie enthusiasts on Amazon Prime. They help promote lesser-known films, refine the recommendation algorithm, and foster meaningful discussions. Embrace the power of your ratings and reviews, and actively participate in shaping the movie-watching experiences for yourself and others.

So, the next time you watch a movie on Amazon Prime, take a moment to rate it and share your thoughts. Your contribution matters, and by rating movies on Amazon Prime, you become an integral part of a community that values and respects the power of informed opinions. How To Rate Movies On Amazon Prime (your Full Guide)

A user of the Amazon Prime Video service has rated a movie. As a result, users will be able to choose a movie to watch that was recommended by the user.

This guide will explain why Amazon Prime Video ratings are important. It will also cover the three primary methods that viewers can use to evaluate a show: User Ratings, User Reviews, and Impressions.

How to Rate Movies on Amazon Prime In 2022

All content on Amazon Prime Video must also be submitted to IMDb for rating. This gives Amazon Prime Video a more authoritative role in the IMDb catalog. Therefore, the more reviews a video has, the more likely it will show up on Amazon Prime Video.

If you are interested in knowing what to do if you want to use the reviews to help you choose what to view, keep reading!

What Is the Star Rating System for Amazon Prime Movies?

Now you can rate movies using one to five stars. Simply click on the “Rate This Movie” button beside a movie’s poster to rate the movie.

After you have selected a star rating, you can press the “Rating” button to submit your feedback.

The “Star Rating” feature allows users to provide feedback for a product.

What Are the Three Primary Methods to Rate Amazon Prime Movies?

Amazon uses the web and mobile app to rate Prime Video content, though the app limits review options to the films. You can rate Prime content on your mobile device, on a computer, or you can leave comments on the Prime Video web site.

How Can Amazon Viewers Use the Customer Review Option to Rate Amazon Prime Movies?

If you follow the steps below, you can easily publish user-provided ratings on movies.

First click on the link to log into your Amazon account. Next, go to the Amazon website and log into your Amazon account.

The Amazon website will ask you to sign in to your account. Now click on the Shopping Basket tab.

On the small window that appears, click on the “Create a Channel” button. A new channel will be created and a few boxes will appear on the page. If you don’t notice, you must enter the correct name and URL of your channel.

If you click on the down arrow for the accounts and lists of Prime Video, you can choose “your account” from amongst them.

On the left you will see “Popular on Rotten Tomatoes.” Right after, you will see this icon. Click it to reveal the reviews.

You can write a review about how much fun the experience was, what you liked, or anything else you want to say.

It is not the only way. It’s just my way, and hopefully it’s a way of getting you to think about why you’re watching the movie.

How Can Viewers Rate Movies on Amazon Prime Video by Improving Recommendations?

If you choose to rate Amazon Prime Video movies using this method, other users will not be able to see the ratings you leave.

Once you start rating, you’ll start receiving personalized movie recommendations based on your ratings, which will help you find new movies to watch.

Amazon’s machine learning technology is probably why they could recommend The Social Network, which I never heard of.

For movies you are interested in, click the “View” button on the far right. For movies that you are interested in, you can click the “Improve Recommendations” button on the far right.

On every Netflix film, look for the ” Improve Recommendations” section on the right hand-side. Here you can choose the type of content you want.

At the bottom, there is a box for you to write a comment. Just write your review and click submit.

How Can Viewers Rate Movies on Amazon Prime Video Through the IMDb App?

While watching videos or TV shows via Prime Video, the IMDB ratings may appear, typically in the upper left corner of your screen.

It is worth noting that these ratings are sometimes incorrect. For example, the viewer rating of a show may be biased towards people with more ratings.

Users can submit ratings by using the IMDb app. When the movie is rated, the rating counts towards the movie’s score. This is the same rating method as the one on IMDb.

Add a rating for a movie to the IMDb app to rate the movie. Choose how to rate the movie (one star or five star rating).

You will then be taken to the Movies page where you can find any movie in the catalog. To add a rating, tap the star rating on the top right of the page and to start writing a review, tap the red pen icon on the top left of the page.

Tap on the “Review” button that appears beneath the poster and you will be able to read more about the movie. You can also add it to your favorites as an MP4 file from the Movies section.

If you are not connected to the internet, then you will be able to rate the product and upload a picture of the product for it to be rated and rated.

Why Can’t I Rate Movies on Amazon Prime App?

No ratings in my region (US). I haven’t rated any movies. There are no movies in my list.

I can’t rate movies on Amazon Prime Video anymore. Also, what’s up with Amazon Prime? I don’t know why I’m getting so many emails in my inbox.

The help page can be found by clicking on the help page icon at the top of the page or the “Help” tab.

Why Does My Review Lack a ‘Helpful’ Action Under It?

If you are using a smartphone to watch the video, set the quality and resolution of the video. In the case of the video is too large to play. If you have any technical issues (for example, the volume is too low, the Internet is too slow), please contact Prime Video Customer Care.

If you think your review should not be in the ‘Was this review helpful to you?’ feature, contact Amazon customer service.

What Should Viewers Do If They Have Difficulties Rating Movies?

You can use the volume keys, which you can bind to the ratings.

To learn more, you can also read our posts on renting books on Book Depository, buying books on Book Depository, and unknown charges from Book Depository.

You are able to rate TV shows or movies on Amazon Prime Video. By following these steps, you help improve recommendations for your account.

You can try several things to rate movies, and you can also try to not see your reviews if you don’t want to give a review.

Whether a movie is a rotten tomato or a brilliant work of art, if people are watching it, it's worth critiquing. A decent movie review should entertain, persuade and inform, providing an original opinion without giving away too much of the plot. A great movie review can be a work of art in its own right. Read on to learn how to analyze a movie like a professional film critic, come up with an interesting thesis, and write a review as entertaining as your source material.

Sample Movie Reviews

how to write a movie review on amazon prime

Writing an Intro for a Movie Review

Step 1 Start with a compelling fact, quote, or opinion on the movie.

  • Comparison to Relevant Event or Movie: "Every day, our leaders, politicians, and pundits call for "revenge"– against terrorist groups, against international rivals, against other political parties. But few of them understand the cold, destructive, and ultimately hollow thrill of revenge as well as the characters of Blue Ruin. "
  • Review in a nutshell: "Despite a compelling lead performance by Tom Hanks and a great soundtrack, Forrest Gump never gets out of the shadow of its weak plot and questionable premise."
  • Context or Background Information: " Boyhood might be the first movie made where knowing how it was produced–slowly, over 12 years, with the same actors–is just as crucial as the movie itself."

Step 2 Give a clear, well-established opinion early on.

  • Using stars, a score out of 10 or 100, or the simple thumbs-up and thumbs-down is a quick way to give your thoughts. You then write about why you chose that rating.
  • Great Movie: ABC is the rare movie that succeeds on almost every level, where each character, scene, costume, and joke firing on all cylinders to make a film worth repeated viewings."
  • Bad Movie: "It doesn't matter how much you enjoy kung-fu and karate films: with 47 Ronin, you're better off saving your money, your popcorn, and time."
  • Okay Movie: "I loved the wildly uneven Interstellar far more than I should have, but that doesn't mean it is perfect. Ultimately, the utter awe and spectacle of space swept me through the admittedly heavy-handed plotting and dialogue."

Step 3 Support your opinions with evidence from specific scenes.

  • Great: "Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer's chemistry would carry Fruitvale Station even if the script wasn't as good. The mid-movie prison scene in particular, where the camera never leaves their faces, shows how much they can convey with nothing but their eyelids, the flashing tension of neck muscles, and a barely cracking voice."
  • Bad: " Jurassic World's biggest flaw, a complete lack of relatable female characters, is only further underscored by a laughably unrealistic shot of our heroine running away from a dinosaur – in heels."
  • Okay: "At the end of the day, Snowpiercer can't decide what kind of movie it wants to be. The attention to detail in fight scenes, where every weapon, lightbulb, and slick patch of ground is accounted for, doesn't translate to an ending that seems powerful but ultimately says little of substance."

Step 4 Create an original...

  • Does the film reflect on a current event or contemporary issue? It could be the director's way of engaging in a bigger conversation. Look for ways to relate the content of the film to the "real" world.
  • Does the film seem to have a message, or does it attempt to elicit a specific response or emotion from the audience? You could discuss whether or not it achieves its own goals.
  • Does the film connect with you on a personal level? You could write a review stemming from your own feelings and weave in some personal stories to make it interesting for your readers.

Composing Your Review

Step 1 Follow your thesis paragraph with a short plot summary.

  • When you name characters in your plot summary, list the actors' names directly afterward in parenthesis.
  • Find a place to mention the director's name and the full movie title.
  • If you feel you must discuss information that might "spoil" things for readers, warn them first.

Step 2 Start to talk about the film’s technical and artistic choices.

  • Cinematography: " Her is a world drenched in color, using bright, soft reds and oranges alongside calming whites and grays that both build, and slowly strip away, the feelings of love between the protagonists. Every frame feels like a painting worth sitting in."
  • Tone: "Despite the insane loneliness and high stakes of being stuck alone on Mars, The Martian's witty script keeps humor and excitement alive in every scene. Space may be dangerous and scary, but the joy of scientific discovery is intoxicating."
  • Music and Sound: " No Country For Old Men's bold decision to skip music entirely pays off in spades. The eerie silence of the desert, punctuated by the brief spells of violent, up-close-and-personal sound effects of hunter and hunted, keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat."
  • Acting: "While he's fantastic whenever he's on the move, using his cool stoicism to counteract the rampaging bus, Keanu Reeves can't quite match his costar in the quiet moments of Speed, which falter under his expressionless gaze."

Step 3 Move into your...

  • Keep your writing clear and easy to understand. Don't use too much technical filmmaking jargon, and make your language crisp and accessible.
  • Present both the facts and your opinion. For example, you might state something such as, "The Baroque background music was a jarring contrast to the 20th century setting." This is a lot more informative then simply saying, "The music was a strange choice for the movie."

Step 4 Use plenty of examples to back up your points.

  • Great: "In the end, even the characters of Blue Ruin know how pointless their feud is. But revenge, much like every taut minute of this thriller, is far too addictive to give up until the bitter end.""
  • Bad: "Much like the oft-mentioned "box of chocolates", Forest Gump has a couple of good little morsels. But most of the scenes, too sweet by half, should have been in the trash long before this movie was put out."
  • Okay: "Without the novel, even revolutionary concept, Boyhood may not be a great movie. It might not even be "good.” But the power the film finds in the beauty of passing time and little, inconsequential moments – moments that could only be captured over 12 years of shooting – make Linklater's latest an essential film for anyone interested in the art of film."

Polishing Your Piece

Step 1 Edit your review.

  • Ask yourself whether your review stayed true to your thesis. Did your conclusion tie back in with the initial ideas you proposed?
  • Decide whether your review contains enough details about the movie. You may need to go back and add more description here and there to give readers a better sense of what the movie's about.
  • Decide whether your review is interesting enough as a stand-alone piece of writing. Did you contribute something original to this discussion? What will readers gain from reading your review that they couldn't from simply watching the movie?

Step 2 Proofread your review.

Studying Your Source Material

Step 1 Gather basic facts about the movie.

  • The title of the film, and the year it came out.
  • The director's name.
  • The names of the lead actors.

Step 2 Take notes on the movie as you watch it.

  • Make a note every time something sticks out to you, whether it's good or bad. This could be costuming, makeup, set design, music, etc. Think about how this detail relates to the rest of the movie and what it means in the context of your review.
  • Take note of patterns you begin to notice as the movie unfolds.
  • Use the pause button frequently so you make sure not to miss anything, and rewind as necessary.

Step 3 Analyze the mechanics of the movie.

  • Direction: Consider the director and how he or she choose to portray/explain the events in the story. If the movie was slow, or didn't include things you thought were necessary, you can attribute this to the director. If you've seen other movies directed by the same person, compare them and determine which you like the most.
  • Cinematography: What techniques were used to film the movie? What setting and background elements helped to create a certain tone?
  • Writing: Evaluate the script, including dialogue and characterization. Did you feel like the plot was inventive and unpredictable or boring and weak? Did the characters' words seem credible to you?
  • Editing: Was the movie choppy or did it flow smoothly from scene to scene? Did they incorporate a montage to help build the story? And was this obstructive to the narrative or did it help it? Did they use long cuts to help accentuate an actor's acting ability or many reaction shots to show a group's reaction to an event or dialogue? If visual effects were used were the plates well-chosen and were the composited effects part of a seamless experience? (Whether the effects looked realistic or not is not the jurisdiction of an editor, however, they do choose the footage to be sent off to the compositors, so this could still affect the film.)
  • Costume design: Did the clothing choices fit the style of the movie? Did they contribute to the overall tone, rather than digressing from it?
  • Set design: Consider how the setting of the film influenced its other elements. Did it add or subtract from the experience for you? If the movie was filmed in a real place, was this location well-chosen?
  • Score or soundtrack: Did it work with the scenes? Was it over/under-used? Was it suspenseful? Amusing? Irritating? A soundtrack can make or break a movie, especially if the songs have a particular message or meaning to them.

Step 4 Watch it one more time.

Expert Q&A

Marissa Levis

  • If you don't like the movie, don't be abusive and mean. If possible, avoid watching the movies that you would surely hate. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Understand that just because the movie isn't to your taste, that doesn't mean you should give it a bad review. A good reviewer helps people find movie's they will like. Since you don't have the same taste in movies as everyone else, you need to be able to tell people if they will enjoy the movie, even if you didn't. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Structure is very important; try categorizing the different parts of the film and commenting on each of those individually. Deciding how good each thing is will help you come to a more accurate conclusion. For example, things like acting, special effects, cinematography, think about how good each of those are. How many people can use amazon prime video at once.

Amazon limits its accounts to three streams happening at the same time. But if multiple people are watching the same content at once, only two simultaneous streams of that content will be allowed.

How to find your favorite videos

While Prime Video organizes titles into different lists, it’s not a great streaming service for browsing. You’ll get lists such as Recently Added and Most Popular Movies and you’ll find genre categories like horror or comedy. Unfortunately, many of these lists have duplicates in them, and Amazon also mixes in premium titles that demand a separate fee with free ones that are included in your Prime subscription.

Look for a Prime banner at the top left of shows or movies to identify what is free to stream as part of your subscription. To filter out paid content, choose Included with Prime from the drop-down list in your browser or use the Free to Me toggle at the top right in the mobile app.

You can use the search option in Prime Video to look for titles, actors, characters, or genres. There are also some useful fixed categories like Amazon Originals, New Releases, Sports, and 4K UHD, which are accessible from the drop-down Categories list in your web browser or via the Find option in the mobile app.

Amazon Prime Video home page

The Amazon Prime Video home page offers access to movies and TV shows sorted into categories

Amazon Prime Video is quite good at recommending content based on what you’ve already watched. Simply watching things is going to inform the recommendation engine and should improve what you see listed in Movies We Think You’ll Like. You will also sometimes see lists based on a single movie you’ve watched. If you’re using Prime Video in your browser you can also select Prime Video Explorer from the Categories drop-down, add some favorites, and get recommendations based on them.

How to check and set video quality

If you’re using the Prime Video mobile app or an Amazon Fire TV device, you can choose the video quality. In the mobile app, tap My Stuff at the bottom right, then the settings cog at the top right, and pick Stream & Download. You can set the streaming quality and download quality separately. You can choose from Data Saver, Good, Better, and Best. These range from 0.14 GB per hour all the way up to 1.82 GB per hour. For the mobile app, there’s also an option to turn on the highest quality when connected to WiFi.

For those watching on a PC or laptop, a settings cog will appear at the top right when you play a movie or TV show; click on it to select video quality.

For devices like smart TVs and laptops, Prime Video determines the streaming quality based on your device and the bandwidth available. This means the quality will drop automatically if your internet connection isn't fast or stable enough.

How to download content to watch offline

It’s easy to download movies and TV shows with Prime Video, but it’s only an option in the mobile app for smartphones and tablets. Sadly, as with most streaming services, there’s no way to download video on laptops or desktop computers.

With the mobile app, simply pick the show or movie you want and look for the download icon, which is a downward arrow. For TV shows, you’ll get the option to download the whole season, but you can also scroll down to pick individual episodes. To find your downloaded content when you’re offline, simply tap My Stuff at the bottom right and check the Downloads tab.

How to build a watchlist

To avoid wasting hours browsing every time you want something new to watch, you can build a custom list. Every TV show or movie you select has a plus icon next to it that you can tap to add it to your watchlist. To find it later, choose My Stuff and then Watchlist. You can filter your watchlist by recently added, A-Z, or Z-A, and you can see movies and TV shows separately.

How to edit your watch history

There may be times when you want to delete an outlying show or movie from your watch history. Maybe it's an outlier that's screwing up the algorithm, or maybe you'd simply like to erase the evidence of your reality TV addiction. Whatever your motivation, it’s easy to do, but you will have to log into Prime Video in a web browser.

Click on Settings, then Watch History and View Watch History to open a new tab listing everything you’ve watched. You can click Hide This to remove entries or you can tick the box on the right labeled “I prefer not to use this for recommendations." You can also rate any videos out of five stars.

How to turn off autoplay

By default, when you’re watching a TV show on Prime Video, the next episode will start automatically when the current one ends. You can turn this off by going to Settings and toggling off Auto Play. If you’re viewing in your browser, look at the top right for Settings then choose the Playback tab to find the Auto Play option. If you’re using the mobile app, it can be found via My Stuff and the settings cog icon.

How to set parental controls

Amazon Prime Video parental controls

The Amazon Prime Video parental controls settings page allows you to set age restrictions by device

If you've got kids, you'll want to set up parental controls for Prime Video— not only because some movies and TV shows are not suitable for younger kids, but also because Amazon mixes in purchased content with the freebies, which could be a recipe for disaster for click-happy kids.

From your web browser, click Settings at the top right and choose Parental Controls. If you’re using the mobile app, tap My Stuff at the bottom left, followed by the Settings cog at the top right, then Parental Controls.

The first thing is to set a PIN that your kids don't know. It’s a good idea to turn on PIN on Purchase so they can’t accidentally (or deviously) buy content without your permission. You should also take a look at Viewing Restrictions where you can set different age restrictions and decide which devices they should apply to.

How to customize subtitles

You can turn subtitles on or off and change the look of them quite easily in Prime Video. In the mobile app, tap on the screen when your chosen content is playing and choose the speech bubble icon at the top right. This same speech bubble icon is also accessible when you move your mouse on a computer or press up on a smart TV remote. When you turn subtitles on, you’ll see the option Subtitle Settings appear; tap it to change the size and format of your subtitles.

For a deeper set of customization tools with Prime Video in your browser, go to Settings and choose the Subtitles tab, then go down to the bottom and look for the Edit option next to your presets. This allows you to change colors, fonts, size, edges, and opacity. Just make sure you save your edits when you’re done.

How to find extras with X-Ray

One of the best features in Amazon Prime Video is X-Ray. If you’ve ever been watching a movie and wondered which familiar face is playing the bad guy or what that catchy song is, X-Ray is your friend.

In the mobile app or in your browser you’ll find the X-Ray option in the top right when you’re playing a movie or TV show. Select it, and you’ll see information on the cast and maybe the title of the song that’s playing.

On most smart TVs you can access X-Ray by pressing down on the remote. When you pause a title while watching, you'll also get X-Ray info that pops up. For some TV shows and movies, you’ll also get access to trivia and bonus content.

How to write and edit Amazon reviews, and find or delete your reviews

  • You can write Amazon reviews on the product page of the item you purchased.
  • Once published, you have the option to view, edit, or hide the review from your profile.
  • All these actions can be accomplished on either the Amazon desktop website or mobile app.

If you buy items through Amazon, writing reviews can not only help other people make informed purchases, but it can also help you keep track of the things that do and don't work for you.

Once you publish an Amazon review, you can go back in and make changes if, for example, you find that the long-term experience of owning an item is different than the first impression. You can also hide reviews from view if you decide you don't want other people to see it for any reason.

Here's what you need to know about writing and editing reviews on the Amazon website and mobile app.

How to write a review on Amazon

You can write reviews on either the desktop website or Amazon Shopping mobile app.

On desktop:

1. Sign in to your Amazon account and navigate to the product you want to rate and review.

2. Scroll down to the Customer reviews section, and under the Review this product headline, click the Write a customer review button.

3. You will then be taken to a page where you leave an overall rating, rate the product features, add a photo, and leave a written review with a headline.

4. Hit Submit at the bottom of the page once you're satisfied with your review.

On mobile:

1. Open the Amazon Shopping app on your iPhone, iPad , or Android and log in, if needed.

2. Go to the product you wish to review and scroll down and tap Customer Reviews .

3. Tap Write a Review .

4. Add your product review.

5. Tap Submit .

How to view, edit, and delete your reviews on Amazon

If your initial review needs to be changed, you can go back in and edit or delete it — or hide it from your public profile. Here's how:

1. Log into your Amazon account .

2. Click Accounts & Lists at the top of the screen.

3. On the next page, click Your Amazon profile under the Ordering and shopping preferences section.

4. Scroll down and you'll see your reviews listed. To edit or delete one, click the three-dot icon at the top-right corner of the review in question.

5. Select Edit review , Delete review , or Hide on my public profile .

1. Open the Amazon Shopping app on your mobile device.

2. Tap the profile icon in the bottom toolbar.

3. Select Your Account .

4. Scroll down and under the Personalized content section, tap Profile .

8 Tips to Write a Proper Movie Review Image

8 Tips to Write a Proper Movie Review

By Film Threat Staff | November 23, 2020

Movies shape how the audience sees the world, and the choices that directors make in developing their films can transform the audience’s understanding of other people, places, and times, for good or for ill. Movies have confronted serious social issues, provided relief from anxieties and fears, and comforted those who felt misunderstood and alone. But movies wouldn’t have half the impact they achieved without reviews to help the audience discover which movies will be meaningful for them and to help separate the great from the awful. However, movie reviews are only as good as the reviewers who translate a cinematic experience into an evaluation and recommendation for the viewer.

If you are looking to enter the field of movie criticism, there are some tips that can help you develop great movie reviews. Audiences have a set of expectations when it comes to a movie review, and it’s important that you as a critic develop your review to meet the audience’s expectations. After all, if your review doesn’t give them what they need, they won’t read future reviews and may not see a movie that you are otherwise enthusiastic about.

1. Watch the movie

It might seem obvious, but you actually need to see the movie before you write about it. More than a few critics have posted reviews based on trailers, press materials, or viewings of incomplete working cuts of the movie. You actually need to see the finished product to know what the audience will be seeing and how it will play with them. If you don’t watch the movie, you don’t have anything worthwhile to say about it.

2. Cover the basics

A good movie review must tell the audience what the movie is about, what it tried to accomplish, whether it achieved those goals, and whether you consider it worthy of being recommended to others to spend their money to go and see. Remember to cover the five W’s—who, what, where, when, and why. The audience needs to know about the film’s basics before you can move ahead and start analyzing whether it was good or bad and why.

3. Go beyond the basics

The five W’s are only the foundation for a movie review. They are not its heart and soul. Like any other type of review, you are entering into a conversation with your readers and with the producers of the art you are reviewing. The idea is to discuss what the movie intended to achieve and how well it did so. Remember, a great review does more than simply summarize the movie. It discusses themes, ideas, imagery, aesthetics, and more.

4. Gauge your audience’s knowledge

Where you publish your review will shape how you write it. If you are writing for a publication targeted to film fans, you can assume a greater level of film knowledge than if you are writing for a newspaper or general interest website. If you are writing for a specialty publication, such as, for example, horror movie fans, you can assume greater familiarity with the history of the genre than if you are writing for a broad general audience.

5. Think like your audience

Consider what your audience wants to know about the movie. Romance fans want to know if the movie is emotionally satisfying. Horror movie fans will want to know how much gore is in the movie and whether the kills are fun to watch. Comedy fans will want to hear about the jokes. Tell the audience what they want to know.

6. Provide sufficient detail

While the length of a review is often limited, be sure you provide enough detail and information that the audience can make up their own mind and decide if they want to see the movie, even if they disagree with your opinion. A small trick for you — specifically look for details you think others wouldn’t notice, to add some novelty in your paper. Stand out among other essays your professor has to read.

7. Take plenty of notes

Don’t rely on your memory to cover all of the elements of the movie, and don’t rely on the press materials, if you received them, to tell the whole story accurately. Memory is fallible, and that can lead to errors that your audience will quickly discover. Errors can create credibility problems. Instead, take notes while you watch so you can refer back to your notes about key plot developments and your reaction to them as they unfolded.

8. Remember to share your own opinion

A movie review isn’t just a summary of the movie. You also need to explain what you thought about it and to support that opinion with evidence. Just stating likes and dislikes is definitely not enough for a paper to be considered a good movie review. What you need to do, is to share your opinion as if you are an expert who makes a choice, and has to explain his/her choice so others agree with it, or at least understand the reasoning fully.

No Time for Movies? Get Some Timely Writing Help

Let’s face it — to write a quality movie review paper, you need time. After reading the tips given above, you understand that you need to watch a movie several times, take plenty of notes, analyze them, look for some similar scenarios, etc. If you are not ready to do it right away, and you are not ready to settle for a subpar paper, the only way is to delegate it to someone else. We recommend finding a reliable writing service that will cover for you when you have other urgent things on your to-do list.

If you get stuck writing a movie review, a wide range of professional essay writing services from Smart Writing Service can help you out. Everything you need to know about Amazon Prime Video

An essential primer on the retail giant’s streaming service.

How much does Amazon Prime video cost?

How do i watch amazon prime video, what movies are on prime video, what shows are on prime video, does amazon prime video offer different subscription packages, does amazon prime video offer a free trial, how do i download amazon prime video, what devices can i download prime video onto, how do i use parental controls on prime video.

Over the years, Amazon has become a force to be reckoned with not only in online retail, but also in television and entertainment. The retail giant's production wing, Amazon Studios, is now a distributor that boasts buzzy and award-winning content in its portfolio, such as Fleabag , The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel , Manchester by the Sea , and The Big Sick . Beyond these "Amazon Originals," the platform also carries a nearly-endless selection of TV shows and movies that are free for Prime Video subscribers to stream. These titles currently include fan favorites such as Downton Abbey , The Americans , and Sex and the City , and films like Marvel's The Avengers .

With its incredibly wide variety of content, Amazon Prime Video is one of the top streaming services available. The best way to watch most of Amazon's TV and movie content would be to sign up for Amazon Prime , which also gives you access to all other Prime membership benefits . So if you're looking to find out how much Amazon Prime Video costs, what movies and TV shows you can watch on Prime Video, and other topics on Amazon Prime such as parental controls and downloadable content, check out everything you need to know about Amazon Prime Video below.

The easiest way to subscribe to Amazon Prime Video would be to sign up for Amazon Prime , which comes with all other Prime membership benefits that the retail giant provides. Amazon Prime costs $119 for an annual Prime membership and $59 per year for a Prime Student membership . To sign up for a student membership, you'll need a valid .edu email address. After four years, you'll be automatically upgraded to the full Prime membership, unless you extend your Prime Student status via specific document verifications .

You can also subscribe to Amazon Prime for $12.99 per month, or $6.49 per month for students — a total of $155.88 and $77.88 per year, respectively. Subscribing to just Prime Video is possible too at $8.99 per month, or $107.88 for the whole year (which is $11 cheaper than an annual Amazon Prime membership).

Those who hold valid EBT or Medicaid cards are also eligible to receive Prime benefits at a discounted rate of $5.99 per month for up to four years.

You can watch Amazon Prime Video on your computer browser by going directly to Amazon's Prime Video website . You can also stream Amazon Prime Video content via the Prime Video app , which is available on smart TVs, Amazon devices (such as the Fire Tablet ), streaming media devices (such as the Fire TV stick and the Roku TV stick ), gaming consoles (Sony's PS4 and PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox systems), Blu-ray players, and iOS and Android app stores.

Nearly every movie you can think of is available for streaming via purchase or rent on Amazon Prime Video at a range of prices, but Prime Members can watch movies that are " Included with Prime " for free. The easiest way to tell if something is "Included with Prime" would be to look for a small white "Prime" banner on the upper left hand side of a movie's poster on Amazon. Landing pages for each Prime-available movie also include a large "Prime" logo below the movie's description, as well as the words, "Watch for $0.00 with Prime."

Selections in the "Included with Prime" category vary over time (similar to other streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, where movies come and go), and movies that are soon to be taken off Prime Video will show a disclaimer indicating the date it will be leaving. Popular movies that Prime Video members can currently watch for free include Lady Bird , A Quiet Place , Marvel's The Avengers , and Creed II .

Over the years, Amazon has also started making original movies under its Amazon Studios subsidiary, and its content is made available as " Amazon Originals " that only Prime Video subscribers can stream on Amazon (for free). Amazon Originals include critical darlings such as Late Night , Suspiria , and Love & Friendship , and previous Oscar contenders such as The Big Sick , Manchester by the Sea , and Cold War .

Members who subscribe to Prime Video can enjoy TV shows in the " Included with Prime " category for free. Series that are " Included with Prime " vary over time and currently contain popular titles such as House , Suits , The Sopranos , Mr. Robot , Veep , Parks and Recreation , and The Good Wife . Amazon is also a great source for watching British TV series, with options such as Downton Abbey , Luther , Peep Show , and The Thick of It available to watch for free with a Prime Video membership.

Like its film counterpart, Amazon Studios has also produced many Amazon Originals TV series that Prime Video members can watch for free. Originals that have become commercially and critically successful include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel , Modern Love , The Man in the High Castle , and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan , and you can only watch them on Prime Video. Amazon has also purchased the U.S. broadcasting rights to many celebrated foreign TV shows and produced them as Originals, including Fleabag , A Very English Scandal , and Catastrophe , all of which members can stream free of charge.

Yes. Amazon exclusively offers channel subscriptions to Prime members that you can purchase as add-ons to your Prime Video membership, and they give you streaming access to certain channels' movies and TV shows. These channels include HBO, Starz, CBS All Access, Showtime, Epix, Cinemax, Hallmark, and more . Their costs differ, but all of them offer free trial periods.

You can also subscribe to specific programs on Amazon Prime Video, such as PBS' Masterpiece (which includes shows from the BBC, ITV, and more), Britbox by UK's BBC and ITV that comes with classic British series such as Inspector Morse , and the NBA League Pass that lets you watch live and recent games.

Yes. Amazon offers a 30-day free trial period for its Prime Video memberships , and the same applies for those who subscribe to the all-inclusive Amazon Prime membership . After the trial period, you will be charged for whichever plan to which the trial corresponds.

You can only download specific movie and TV show titles via the Prime Video app on a Fire tablet, or through the Prime Video app for iOS or Android . For the former, simply tap Prime Video on the home screen of your Fire tablet, or go to the Video tab.

To download content on the iOS and Android Prime Video app , start by searching the movie or TV show you'd like to watch offline. If it's available for downloading, you'll see a small download icon on the right hand side of each TV episode, or right under the "Watch Now" banner for downloadable movies. All your downloaded titles will be in the "Downloads" tab of the app, available for viewing without WiFi.

You can download Prime Video content onto iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices , as well as Fire tablet devices. Unfortunately, there is no Prime Video app for laptops and desktop computers, so you'll have to go to Amazon's website to watch Prime Video content online if you don't have a mobile device.

Prime Video allows for parental controls, but these restrictions will only apply to the device for which they were set up. Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles and Fire TV devices, tablets, and phones have their own parental controls settings that restrict access to certain content, and you can manage these settings directly on those devices.

To set up parental controls, you first have to set up a Prime Video PIN . You can do so via Prime Video Settings > Parental Controls on a computer, or through My Stuff > Settings > Parental Controls > Viewing Restrictions on the Prime Video app for iOS and the Prime Video app for Android.

Once you make your pin, you can then set an age restriction and the devices to which you want to apply this limit. To bypass any purchase or viewing restrictions you've enabled, you will then be required to input the PIN when trying to access restricted content.

How do I write a review on Prime Video?

I'm in Canada. I've spent about 20mins googling how to review Prime Video content I've watched, and none of them are accurate. The "write a review" button doesn't exist on anything I've watched. One site says "click on Accounts and Lists". That doesn't exist. Another site said from the menu in the top right, that does not exist.

Driven by the thirst for vengeance, Leonard navigates a fragmented reality, relying on tattoos, Polaroid photographs, and scribbled notes to unravel the mystery surrounding his wife's murder. The movie unfolds in a way that forces both Leonard and the audience to question the reliability of memory and the consequences of obsession. Director Christopher Nolan's carefully crafted puzzle will keep you guessing until the very end, though you'll be moved to the edge of your seat long before the credits ever roll.

'Top Gun: Maverick'

Top Gun: Maverick | NEW Official Trailer (2022 Movie) - Tom Cruise - YouTube

I didn't know I felt the need for speed again, but Top Gun: Maverick made me realize what I’d been missing. Before release, Maverick felt like a sequel nobody asked for, but it proved to be a blast, the kind of old-school, crowd-pleasing action film that is missing among the wave of CGI-heavy superhero flicks.

Tom Cruise puts every last ounce of his daredevil personality into this sequel. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is an ace test pilot who still likes to make trouble for his superiors. His former rival, Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer) assigns him to train an elite group of Top Gun grads to carry out a dangerous mission. The group includes Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), who happens to be the son of Maverick's late friend Goose. - KW

My Policeman

My Policeman - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Don’t worry, darling – Harry Styles isn’t done making movies yet. His last film may have circled down the drain due to non-stop gossip (and poor reviews), but the former One Direction band member is still heading toward a film career.

In My Policeman, he stars as a gay cop in 1950s Brighton. Tom Burgess is in the closet, though, married to teacher Marion (Emma Corrin, aka Princess Diana from The Crown). He has a secret affair with museum curator Patrick (David Dawson). Years later, the older version of Tom (Linus Roache) has a reunion with older Patrick (Ruper Everett) that is both unexpected and painful. - KW

Catherine Called Birdy

Catherine Called Birdy - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

This passion project written and directed by Lena Dunham is an adaptation of Karen Cushman’s 1994 Newbery Medal-winning children’s book. Set in the 13th century, the medieval coming-of-age story follows Lady Catherine aka Birdy (Game of Thrones alum Bella Ramsey) as the sassy, smart daughter of financially-downturned nobles.

Her father Lord Rollo (Andrew Scott) wants to sell her off to a wealthy husband, but the rebellious Birdy finds a way to evade almost all the suitors. Unfortunately, she’s betrothed to a rich man she calls Shaggy Beard (Paul Kaye) and she’ll have to resort to desperate measures to get out of the marriage. - KW

Thirteen Lives

Thirteen Lives - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Hollywood loves making melodramatic movies that rip from the headlines about real-life perilous events. Tom Hanks has starred in several of them (see: Sully, Captain Phillips). He is surprisingly not involved in Thirteen Lives, though it’s directed by frequent collaborator Ron Howard.

The survival flick chronicles the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue of a local junior football team and their coach, who were trapped by a heavy rainfall for 18 days. Their plight gained worldwide interest and drew international rescue teams. Viggo Mortenson stars as Richard Stanton and Colin Farrell is John Volanten, the divers who found them. They must race around the clock to extract the teens from the cave before the next monsoon hits. - KW

Don't Make Me Go

Don't Make Me Go - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Six years after #StarringJohnCho went viral on social media, there is still a decided lack of movies and shows starring the insanely charismatic actor. Cho really deserves more headlining opportunities (the short-lived Cowboy Bebop series hardly counts), so it’s great to see him headlining this heartwarming road trip flick.

Max is a single dad who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. In an attempt to bond with his teen daughter Wally (Mia Isaac), he proposes a cross-country journey. Wally, who doesn’t know his secret, reluctantly agrees after being promised driving lessons. They head to New Orleans for Max’s college reunion, where he hopes to encounter Wally’s long-absent mother. - KW

All the Old Knives

All the Old Knives - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton star in this tense thriller as spies and ex-lovers who play a smoldering cat-and-mouse game over dinner — shades of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Henry has been tasked by his CIA boss (Lawrence Fishburne) to look into an old case: a plane hijacking that ended with the deaths of everyone on board, including the terrorists. The disaster still haunts the CIA to this day, especially since they suspect a mole might’ve leaked info to the terrorist — and Celia is a prime suspect. Henry must wine and dine her to dig for the truth, but as the meal progresses, it begins to feel like one of them might not make it to dessert.

I Want You Back

I Want You Back - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Breaking up is hard to do, which is why Peter (Charlie Day) and Emma (Jenny Slate) are scheming to get their partners back. After meeting randomly in their office building, they bond over the fact that both were unexpectedly dumped.

Misery loves company, so when they see their exes Anne (Gina Rodriguez) and Noah (Scott Eastwood) have moved on with new people, they hatch a desperate plot to torpedo the new romances. Emma offers to seduce Logan, Anne's new boyfriend, while Peter attempts to befriend Noah and discourage him from pursuing Ginny (Clark Backo). What could go wrong? Everything!

Book of Love

Book of Love - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, Prime Video unveils this light, gentle rom-com about uptight English writer Henry (Sam Claflin) whose novel is a massive failure everywhere but Mexico. When he’s invited to take a promotional tour through the country, he meets the book’s translator, Maria (Verónica Echegui), who will be traveling with him.

Soon, Henry discovers why his book is such a success in Mexico — Maria has rewritten it as an erotic novel. He’s furious, but also finds himself very attracted to her. You can probably guess how this story ends.

The Tender Bar

The Tender Bar - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

Ben Affleck is in front of the camera and George Clooney is behind it for this adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist J. R. Moehringer’s memoir, which recounts his childhood in Long Island. The fatherless young J.R. (Daniel Ranieri, then Tye Sheridan) grows up sitting at the bar tended by his Uncle Charlie (Affleck). His financially-strapped mother (Lily Rabe) has big aspirations for him, and as J.R. struggles to achieve them, he returns to the bar again and again to receive Charlie’s support and advice.

As a director, Clooney has delivered a string of unmemorable films (The Midnight Sky, anyone? Suburbicon?), and The Tender Bar doesn’t exactly break the streak. But if you’re in the mood for a heartwarming, sweet story anchored by a terrific performance from Affleck, then this is your ticket.

Being the Ricardos

Being the Ricardos - Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube

There’s nothing Aaron Sorkin loves more than going behind the scenes of a television show. He did it with Sports Night, then again with the indulgent Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and most recently (and perhaps most egregiously) with The Newsroom. He’s back at it again in this movie about the stars of I Love Lucy. For the youths, that was a sitcom that aired on CBS in the 1950s.

Nicole Kidman makes yet another transformation into the flame-haired Lucille Ball, while Javier Bardem plays her husband and creative partner Desi Arnaz. Several personal crises coalesce during one week of production, threatening to derail the show and the couple’s careers.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy star in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

Benedict Cumberbatch is already getting awards season notice for The Power of the Dog, but that’s the only movie he’s in this fall. In this biopic, Cumberbatch stars as the eccentric artist Louis Wain, whose trippy, anthropomorphised paintings of cats helped transform the public perception of felines. His work is widely credited as starting the widespread adoption of cats as pets.

The movie follows Wain from the late 1800s to the 1930s, as he seeks to unlock the “electrical” mysteries of the world. His ruminations lead his art to become more stylized and psychedelic, but also give him more insight into the love he shares with wife Emily (Claire Foy). Watch now

How to watch Annette online: Adam Driver

Adam Driver’s oeuvre can best be summed up as “extremely eclectic,” and this trippy dramedy falls right in. He plays a stand-up comedian named Henry McHenry (really) who falls in love with a world-renowned opera singer, Ann (Marion Cotillard). The passionate and glamorous couple soon have a daughter, Annette — portrayed by a wooden marionette puppet (yes, really). But as Ann travels the world singing, Henry's career begins to suffer and their marriage unravels. After a tragedy, Annette develops a mysterious ability that stuns her father and the world.

Without Remorse

Without Remorse on Amazon Prime Video with Michael B. Jordan

This feature-film spinoff from the Jack Ryan franchise tells the origin story of John Clark (Michael B. Jordan), a fan-favorite character in Tom Clancy's books. Before he's John Clark, he's John Kelly in the movie, which starts with the Navy SEAL successfully leading a top-secret op against former Russian soldiers. In retaliation, the group murders his pregnant wife and Kelly vows to avenge her. Kelly teams up with a fellow SEAL (Jodie Turner-Smith) and a shadowy CIA agent (Jamie Bell), but their mission ends up exposing a vast international conspiracy that threatens to trigger war between the U.S. and Russia. Kelly finds himself torn between personal honor and loyalty to his country as he and his allies try to avert disaster and reveal the powerful figures behind the conspiracy.

Coming 2 America

Coming 2 America

Did we really need yet another sequel of a long-past movie? Probably not, but in these (still) pandemic times, I’m happy to see Eddie Murphy’s old gem unearthed and given a new shine. There’s some head-scratching retconning in Coming 2 America , but just wave it away. Murphy’s Prince Akeem, now king of Zamunda, returns to Queens to find his long-lost son Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) because his country’s sexist policies won’t let any of his daughters inherit the throne. Lavelle and his mom (Leslie Jones) become the new fish out of water, as they travel to Zamunda for a very awkward family reunion.

Sound of Metal

Best movies on Amazon: Sound of Metal

This powerful, affecting drama follows the journey of Ruben (Riz Ahmed), a metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing. It's a devastating development, because his entire identity is wrapped up in playing and listening to music. When he spirals into addiction, his girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks him into a rehab center for the deaf, where he grapples with his new normal. Ahmed delivers a stunning performance in one of the best movies on Amazon Prime.

Love and Friendship

best movies on Amazon Prime Video: Love and Friendship

Kate Beckinsale is at her most charming in this fizzy, crackling adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Lady Susan. The recently widowed lady uses those charms (and other, more wicked tactics) in a scheme to ensnare a rich new husband. Her plan is complicated by the fact that she's having an affair with a married man. It's a blast watching Beckinsale ratchet up her powers of flirtation as she pursues a clueless suitor. And Chloe Sevigny is perfect as Lady Susan's droll American friend.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Best movies on Amazon Prime Video: Borat 2

Sacha Baron Cohen is back as his most (in)famous character — journalist Borat Sagdiyev of Kazakhstan. He's returning to America, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, to get close to President Donald Trump. Chaos, of course, ensues. This time, he's joined by daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova), who he's offering as a bride to Vice President Mike Pence, then later to Rudy Giuliani. A scene involving the latter has sparked a ton of online chatter.

The Big Sick

Best movies on Amazon Prime Video: The Big Sick

This delightful and nuanced romantic comedy is based on the real-life courtship of comedian Kumail Nanjiani and wife Emily V. Gordon. Nanjiani plays a version of himself, while Zoe Kazan takes on Emily's role. Their budding relationship is halted first by Kumail's expectation of an arranged marriage with a Pakistani woman of his parents' choice, then by Emily falling extremely ill. Kumail wants to win her back, but to do that, he first has to win over her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter). We may know how it ends, but the journey to get there is worth watching.

The Handmaiden

Best movies on Amazon Prime Video: The Handmaiden

One of 2016's darkest, sexiest, most intense films, The Handmaiden tells the story of the devious Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) and the enterprising Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Fujiwara is a con artist who plans to milk a wealthy Japanese heiress for all that she's worth, while Sook-hee is a pickpocket whom he contracts to pose as, you guessed it, the heiress's handmaiden. But as Sook-hee grows closer and closer to the heiress, alliances shift and double-crosses become inevitable. The film doesn't pull any punches on violence or eroticism, but it doesn't shy away from a gripping story or complex characters, either.

Best movies on Amazon Prime Video: Suspiria

A highly anticipated remake of a classic 1977 Italian horror film, Suspiria stars Dakota Johnson as a young woman who joins a German dance company, only to find out that the whole operation is run by witches. (Don't you just hate it when that happens?) Seeing the supernatural drama unfold is one reason to watch this film; Tilda Swinton represents three others. In Suspiria, you get a triple-dose of Swinton: as a choreographer, a (male) therapist and one more role that might be a bit of a spoiler — but it's worth the buildup. Suspiria is one of those films that people tend to either love or hate, depending on their tolerance for weird gore and an outlandish tone. But it's better to get something unique than something that plays it safe.

Creed - Official Trailer [HD] - YouTube

"Creed" is a sports drama movie that serves as a spinoff and sequel to the "Rocky" series. The movie centers around Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the illegitimate son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Despite never having known his famous father, Adonis is determined to forge his own path in the boxing world.

Adonis seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), his father's old rival and friend, to train him. Rocky, now retired and dealing with personal struggles, reluctantly agrees to mentor the young boxer. As Adonis trains under Rocky's guidance, he faces numerous challenges both inside and outside the ring. "Creed" actually received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and its respectful continuation of the "Rocky" saga.   — AB

Pearl | Official Trailer HD | A24 - YouTube

"Pearl" is a psychological horror serving as a prequel to the earlier movie "X." The movie stars Mia Goth as Pearl, a young woman living on her family's isolated farm during the early 20th century. Pearl dreams of escaping her oppressive and mundane life to pursue stardom and a more glamorous existence. As the story unfolds, Pearl's desperation to break free from her circumstances drives her to increasingly dark and violent behavior. The film delves into her psychological unraveling, exploring themes of ambition, isolation, and madness.   — AB

'The Holdovers'

THE HOLDOVERS - Official Trailer [HD] - In Select Theaters October 27, Everywhere November 10 - YouTube

Director Alexander Payne affectionately evokes the spirit of 1970s cinema with this snarky yet warm dramedy about a misanthropic classics teacher forced to chaperone a group of students over winter break. Set in 1970 New England, the movie stars Paul Giamatti as the perpetually grumpy Paul Hunham, who resents the privileged students he teaches at an elite boarding school.

When Hunham is assigned to supervise the “holdovers” who don’t go home for the holidays, he’s left on campus with student Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), along with school cafeteria manager Marie Lamb (Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph). After other students leave, the three of them form an unlikely bond, in a story that is heartwarming without becoming sappy. The characters remain prickly and difficult while also coming to a deeper understanding of what connects them. - JB

'Beetlejuice'

Beetlejuice | 4K Trailer | Warner Bros. Entertainment - YouTube

It’s hard to believe that “Beetlejuice” is only the second feature film by director Tim Burton, because his signature goth-cute style is already in full effect in this enormously entertaining supernatural comedy. Michael Keaton gives one of his most memorable performances as the title character, an opportunistic ghost who seizes on the prospect of haunting the living when he’s summoned by a newly deceased couple.

Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin play the couple who are horrified by the new residents of their formerly cozy home and want them driven away, with Winona Ryder as the sullen teen daughter of those obnoxious new owners. “Beetlejuice” is a vibrant, funny, gorgeously designed movie that captures all of Burton’s strengths, defining one of cinema’s most distinctive aesthetics while telling a creative, engaging story. - JB

'No Country for Old Men'

No Country for Old Men | Official Trailer (HD) - Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones | MIRAMAX - YouTube

The only Coen brothers movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture is one of their darkest films, and also one of their best . The Coens adapt Cormac McCarthy’s bleak novel about the devastating consequences that come for a hunter who discovers a case of money left behind after a drug deal gone bad. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds himself the target of relentless hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), and both are pursued by pragmatic Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones).

Bardem won a well-deserved Oscar for his bone-chilling portrayal of the psychopathic Chigurh, one of the most terrifying movie villains of all time. The Coens retain their deadpan sense of humor while bringing McCarthy’s harsh story of violence and cruelty to life onscreen.

The boys (s1-4).

What if superheroes were not only real, but as full of fears, doubt and crushing character flaws as the rest of us? That’s the premise behind this superb comic book adaptation from the producers of Preacher , in which a bunch of world famous costumed crusaders are owned and controlled by Vought, a ruthless corporation that keeps their bad behaviour – which ranges from voyeurism and drug abuse to outright murderous psychopathy – under wraps to keep the cashflow moving.

When one super-powered outrage leaves a young man bereaved and hellbent on revenge, he joins a group of like-minded vigilantes with the aim of bringing Vought down once and for all. Effortlessly blending humour, action and drama, The Boys manages to be Amazon’s best original series in ages.

Federer: Twelve Final Days

Federer: Twelve Final Days gives us an intimate behind-the-scenes look at the last days of Roger Federer’s 24-year tennis career. Made by Asif Kapadia (previously responsible for Amy and Senna ) and Joe Sabia, the documentary captures the emotions, challenges, and reflections of the Swiss maestro as he prepares for his final court appearances. Interestingly, it was never originally intended for public release: Federer approached Sabia with the aim of creating a shorter film for his inner circle’s eyes only. Only later was Kapadia brought on board to turn it into a feature-length movie.

Based around interviews with the man himself as well as his family, close friends and long-time rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, it offers an illuminating and poignant (if not particularly exciting or surprising, it has to be said) look at the end of a truly legendary era of professional tennis.

This bold, boisterous and bawdy comedy follows two unpopular high school seniors who start a fight club. Why? To impress hot girls and lose their virginities, of course. Played by Rachel Sennott (who also co-wrote the film with director Emma Seligman) and The Bear ’s Ayo Edebiri, the pair are shocked when their inventive if unconventional scheme becomes a hit.

As the club gains momentum, chaos ensues and the high school’s long-established status quo starts to break down. The film combines sharp wit and physical comedy – punchlines and punches, in other words – with genuine heart. And it delights in turning teen movie tropes on their head, referencing a host of old classics while serving up something genuinely fresh.

Fallout (S1)

Like HBO’s recent adaptation of The Last of Us , Fallout bucks the trend for TV shows based on video games – and how. Developed by Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy with close cooperation from Bethesda Game Studios, this series perfectly captures the retro-futuristic aesthetic and knowing humour of the source material. More importantly, it also succeeds in being a watchable, funny and action-packed show. So even audiences totally unfamiliar with the games are in for a treat.

It succeeds via the old-fashioned arts of deft worldbuilding, relatable characters and an involving plot, which follows a trusting and inexperienced vault-dweller as she emerges into irradiated, post-nuclear California to track down her kidnapped father.

Upload (S1-3)

Set in a future where people can opt to be ‘uploaded’ into a digital afterlife when they die, Upload centres around app developer Nathan. After a car crash, he awakes in the luxurious but peculiar Lakeview – a virtual hereafter. With the help of his customer service ‘Angel’ Nora – a living, breathing human – Nathan must adjust to his bizarre new surroundings while investigating the circumstances of his death.

Blending comedy, romance and a touch of mystery, the series offers a thought-provoking satirical look at what it means to be human in an increasingly digital world. As a Stuff reader, it should be right up your alley.

Anatomy of a Fall

A man tumbles from the window of a French mountain chalet. It’s fatal. But was it an accident? An intentional act? Could he have been pushed by someone else?

If that summary makes Anatomy of a Fall sound like an elevated episode of Quincy , we’re happy to reassure you that this Oscar- and Palme d’Or-winning French film is a lot more than a straightforward whodunnit.

While it takes the form of a legal thriller, this movie is a cerebral, sophisticated character study of a complex marriage between two complex people. Clichéd it is not – and by the end you’ll be questioning not only whether or not the truth was genuinely uncovered, but perhaps even the objective nature of truth itself.

Watch Anatomy of a Fall on Prime Video

There’s nothing like a good disaster movie to help you unwind after a long day. In Greenland the stakes couldn’t be higher: an interstellar ‘planet killer’ comet is coming to extinguish almost all life on Earth. So our hero Gerard Butler must get his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin) and young son to the relative safety of an underground bunker in (yes, you guessed it) Greenland.

There’s nothing particularly original going on here, but it’s a well-crafted race-against-time thriller that successfully conveys the magnitude of the comet’s threat. From violent looters to failing technology to flaming rocks from the sky, Butler and Baccarin find themselves beset by a terrible array of perils – even before the coming collision that may wipe out humanity completely. Yikes!

Swarm is a riotously creative comedy-horror series about toxic fandom. Protagonist Dre (superbly played by Dominique Fishback) is shy, quiet and socially inept, but feels empowered in her membership of ‘The Swarm’, the obsessive online fanbase surrounding global popstar Ni’Jah (clearly inspired by real-life idol Beyoncé).

When a family tragedy coincides with the surprise drop of Ni’Jah’s latest album and video, Dre draws a relationship between the two events, tipping her over the edge into a deranged orgy of violence. This dark, disturbing and entertaining exploration of ‘stan culture’ is among Prime’s best original series.

Jury Duty (S1)

One of the few Amazon originals made specifically for its ad-supported Freevee offshoot (which means you don’t need an Amazon Prime account to watch – just a strong stomach when it comes to unskippable commercial breaks), this hilarious reality show is ostensibly a fly-on-the-wall series about the ups and downs of serving on a jury.

The thing is, aside from one member of the jury who’s not in on the joke, every person on-screen is an actor: the other jurors, the judge, the bailiffs, the lawyers and everyone else involved in the trail know exactly what’s going on. So, like a some massively extended Beadle’s About skit, our poor mark is dragged into all kinds of awkward, embarrassing and enraging situations for our amusement. Cruel and unusual, but brilliant all the same.

The true (ish) tale of how staid and straitlaced (no pun intended) sneaker maker Nike became the coolest sportswear brand in the world gets the star treatment in this enjoyable Ben Affleck-directed brand-opic (a genre we just made up, but seems to be all the rage at the moment).

Affleck himself is among a cast that includes Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Jason Bateman and Chris Tucker and tells the story of how Nike’s basketball talent scout Sonny Vaccaro (Damon) relentlessly courted a young rookie by the name of Michael Jordan. The rest is all well-known sporting history, of course, but the film never stops being a fun ride – even if the character of Jordan himself never appears on screen.

Daisy Jones & The Six (S1)

Adapted from the 2019 novel of the same name, this story of the rise and fall of a 1970s Los Angeles rock band isn’t short on cliché. All the tropes are here: sex, drugs, booze, creative differences, professional jealousy, punishing tour schedules, scummy label executives, tortured artists and, occasionally, some toe-tapping tunes. But even if we’ve seen it all before, the scuzzy glamour of the setting and strong lead performances from Riley Keogh and Sam Claflin make this an enjoyable retro trip to the golden age of classic rock.

Bosch (S1-7)

The brooding loose cannon cop who gets the job done while rubbing pen-pushing top brass the wrong way might be a huge cliche, but this three-season series about LA detective Harry Bosch is so enjoyable that you’ll overlook it. In fact, you’ll probably end up embracing it as warmly as we do, chuckling to yourself every time Lance Reddick’s Deputy Commissioner ruefully intones something along the lines of, “Who beat up the witness? Bosch? Why am I not surprised?”

Based on Michael Connelly’s novels, the show weaves together various season-spanning cases while also delving periodically into Bosch’s own troubled backstory and his ongoing search for the man who murdered his mother. Its plot alone is gripping enough to keep you coming back episode after episode, but we also love Bosch ‘s mood, which brings modern-day LA noir to the screen like nothing else on TV.

When you’ve binged your way through all seven seasons of this, you can catch the similarly great spin-off series Bosch: Legacy on Prime Video’s ad-supported sister channel Freevee .

The Peripheral (S1)

Based on a story by cyberpunk genre trailblazer William Gibson, this slick sci-fi series stars Chloe Grace Moretz as a small-town girl with big VR gaming skills in a near-future America. With a sick mother to look after, when she gets the opportunity to earn some extra money playing a highly realistic sim she jumps at the chance, only to find herself whisked to a virtual London in the year 2100. But this particular digital world seems far too real to be replica – it feels like she’s genuinely travelled forward in time. But that’s impossible. Isn’t it?

Thus begins a mind-bending action-thriller set across two different timelines, packed with crazy technology like invisible cars and murderous robot bodyguards. Probably Amazon’s best original show of 2022.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (S1)

Amazon cranking up Prime Video’s subscription fee by about 20% just prior to the arrival of its biggest ever original series might smack of cynical price-gouging, but let’s face it: given the state of the real world right now, many of us would gladly fork out a few extra notes to spend some time in J.R.R. Tolkien’s impossibly picturesque Middle-Earth.

Set thousands of years before the events depicted in Peter Jackson’s movies, this fantasy drama is the first time Tolkien’s Second Age has been brought to the screen. You already know the drill – elves, orcs, swords, dwarves, Balrogs and hobbits (sorry, ‘harfoots’) – but you probably don’t know the story, because it’s basically all new. The series has had a mixed reception from critics and Tolkien fans, and we can certainly agree that it takes its sweet time to get going, but fantasy aficionados should lap it all up gleefully.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S1-5)

Missing Mad Men ? A mind for something else in the mid-century Manhattan milieu? The Marvelous Mrs Maisel might be the new series for you.

House of Cards ‘ Rachel Brosnahan stars as Midge Maisel, a vivacious, fast-talking housewife with what she thought was the perfect 1950s New York lifestyle: husband, kids, beautiful Upper West Side apartment, the works. When sudden upheaval turns that all upside down, she decides to pursue a career in standup comedy – and discovers she has something of a talent for not only making people laugh but for hitting upon life’s truths and enigmas while doing it.

Watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime

Reacher (S1-2)

Jack Reacher is described as a 6’5” man mountain in Lee Child’s bestselling series of novels – it’s a huge (no pun intended) part of his character. So when the movie adaptations cast the famously-not-6’5” Tom Cruise as the former military policeman turned rootless hero, eyebrows went skyward. Amazon’s excellent series puts the far taller, far beefier Alan Ritchson in Reacher’s boots, and what he lacks in Hollywood pizazz he makes up for in sheer screen presence.

Reacher (even his own mother calls him “Reacher”) is built like a brick outhouse and only marginally more talkative, but blessed with a keen intelligence, a heart of gold and the ability to absolutely annihilate any lowlife who steps to him. When he wanders into a small Georgia town only to find himself immediately arrested for murder, Reacher must use his wits, wiles and muscles to find the crime’s true perpetrators.

Watch Reacher on Prime Video

Invincible (S1-2)

Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman brings another of his cult comic books to the screen. This animated series concerns a young superhero coming to terms with his newfound powers – and dealing with the fact that his dad is the most powerful and famous masked crusader on the planet. If that sounds like something you’ve seen a thousand times before in superhero fiction, we urge you to give it a chance anyway: the plot throws a curveball early on that is guaranteed to make you sit up and pay attention. Stephen Yuen, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mahershala Ali and Mark Hamill are among the star-studded voice cast.

Watch Invincible on Amazon Prime Video

The Expanse (S1-6)

Game of Thrones with spaceships? That’s a lazy and reductive way to describe The Expanse , but also pretty accurate: it has a massive cast of characters, many of whom are shaded with more grey than an army of raccoons; its story is based around conflict and scheming as various factions vie for power while potentially ignoring a much greater existential threat; and it’s packed with graphic sex, violence and language. Hell yeah!

Set in a period when humanity has conquered the solar system and a war between Earth and Mars seems to be looming, The Expanse is a thoroughly enjoyable sci-fi space opera in a largely believable representation of the future. It was set to be prematurely cancelled by original maker SyFy after three seasons, but Amazon not only acquired full rights to broadcast the show but has already made two more seasons – great news for the millions of fans already addicted to its twisty plot lines.

Palm Springs

Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, a couple of strangers who happen to be guests at the same wedding, find themselves stuck in an infinite time loop in this offbeat romcom. If they fall asleep or die, they wake up and live the entire day through again. The pair decide to make the most of their temporal purgatory, indulging in wilder and wilder behaviour in the knowledge that whatever happens, they’ll just end up back at square one. Everything, it seems, has become meaningless.

It might sound like a hackneyed idea but Palm Springs feels different by dint of focussing on a pair of people rather than just one. The chemistry and tensions between the two keep the film nicely involving – and it’s very funny to boot.

Watch Palm Springs on Amazon Prime Video

Undone (S1-2)

The visuals of Amazon’s first animated original series are startlingly realistic, because they use the rotoscoping technique: seemingly hand-drawn images “traced” over live actors. It’s perfect for relaying the slightly unreal life of protagonist Alma, a young woman whose monotonous, directionless routine is shattered by a near-death experience that allows her to see and speak to her late father – who is seemingly urging her to uncover the mystery of his death.

Watch Undone on Amazon Prime Video

The Vast of Night

A telephone switchboard operator notices a mysterious sound on her headset, sparking off a series of creepy revelations in this gem of a retro sci-fi movie from rookie director Andrew Patterson.

From its late 1950s small town America setting to its sound design and music, The Vast of Night gleefully channels classic mystery shows like The Twilight Zone , The Outer Limits , Twin Peaks and The X-Files , not to mention films like Super 8 and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but its snappy dialogue and stylish camerawork make it stand out on its own. The plot is simple, the cast small and unknown, but Patterson wrings the most out of his tiny budget.

Watch The Vast of Night on Amazon Prime Video

Good Omens (S1-2)

Lovers of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s cult fantasy novel have for years been crossing fingers, toes and other body parts in the hopes that one day, somebody would take a chance on a screen adaptation of Good Omens – and that somebody turned out to be Amazon. The result is this glitzy, star-studded six-part miniseries.

Set in modern day England, it focusses on a demon and an angel (the very watchable David Tennant and Michael Sheen) whose eons-old friendship faces obliteration (along with the rest of the world) as the Antichrist comes of age and Armageddon looms. With the supporting cast including Jon Hamm, Frances McDormand, Miranda Richardson and Michael McKean, and Amazon’s deep pockets providing the necessary budget to really bring the novel to life, the fanboys and girls’ waiting has not been in vain.

Watch Good Omens on Amazon Prime

Transparent (S1-5)

Amazon had been trying to “do a Netflix” by creating its very own blockbusting, awards-grabbing TV series for ages, and Transparent is that show. For a start, it’s bold and inventive – it tells the story of a 60-something divorcee announcing to his three grown-up kids that he’s always felt different and is now going to live as a woman.

Sounds heavy, and it sort of is, but it’s also darkly funny, with a degree of wit and sharpness that’s still rare even in this golden age of TV. The bickering between the three kids (each of whom is riddled with their own individual issues and peccadillos) is as chucklesome as it is awkward and real. Amazing telly.

Watch Transparent on Amazon Prime

The Grand Tour (S1-5)

Clarkson and company’s Top Gear -beater is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of deal; if you’re an oily-fingered petrolhead, or simply into watching ageing boy-men on banter-fuelled road trips, you’re going to enjoy this jape-packed series a lot.

If you can’t stand this brand of overbearing laddishness, The Grand Tour isn’t going to transform you into a believer – but for anybody looking for some beautifully shot (4K! HDR!) mindless entertainment to grace that new Ultra HD telly, this impeccably-produced show fits the bill perfectly.

Watch The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime

American Gods (S1-3)

This mega-budget drama from Bryan Fuller (previously show runner on Stuff favourite Hannibal ) is based on the beloved Neil Gaiman novel, and weaves together cords of ancient mythology, modern mythology, Americana and pop culture to create a modern fantasy tale – a tale about immigration, above other things.

The cast includes the classy likes of Ian McShane, Peter Stormare and Gillian Anderson, but British viewers will be shocked to see former Hollyoaks hunk Ricky Whittle in the leading role – and doing a very decent job along with it.

How to Write a Movie Review: Tips for Aspiring Critics

Updated 02 Sep 2024

how to write a movie review

If you wish to know how to write a movie review, then you are on the right page. A movie review forms part of essays college students writes. While many cinema-loving students find it interesting, others don’t. A film review does not mean writing what happened in a film; instead, it involves doing a critical assessment of the same as an art form that reflects cultural and societal values. Also, you can proof your paper instantly with the Edubirdie plagiarism tool .

What is a movie review? A movie review is a detailed analysis of a film or a documentary. It involves analysis, research, and reporting the writer’s views in a structured way. The writer assumes a position of educating readers whether they have watched the film or not. In fact, many people read movie reviews to decide whether they want to see a film or not.

Film criticism, as a historical and evolving practice, shapes the discourse around cinema. Notable critics and the transition of film reviews from traditional media to various platforms highlight the importance of analysis and personal insights in creating effective movie reviews.

A film review tests students’ critical thinking and reporting skills. It also examines their dexterity in writing in a logical, concise, lucid, and creative manner. This post shall teach you to craft the best film review in your class without being redundant in writing , and you can find many interesting tips on how to write a movie review for college and movie reviews examples. Writing a movie review requires critical analysis and attention to detail, and if you need assistance, a literature review writing service can help you craft a comprehensive and insightful review.

How to Write a Movie Review Like a Professional Critic

Watch the movie:.

Before you can review any film, you must watch it. You cannot review a motion picture you have not watched. Therefore, for success watch the film at least twice. Note: do not watch it like you’re a regular moviegoer or movie enthusiast. Be focused and conscious through the film. Take notes if necessary.

You will need to take notes hence have a notebook and pen handy. Record all events and characters (major and minor). Try to be meticulous do not overlook anything.

Research the movie

Watching the film should give you the overview and feel of the movie. With that, it should be easy and exciting to research the movie. The research augments what you have watched in the movie. In your research, you should find out who the filmmaker is, what prompted the making of the movie, the characterization, historical events the lead to the film, location, plot and so on.

If you are aware of the details behind the movie, the movie will be more understandable and engaging. Note also that if you do not understand the movie you cannot move to the next step which involves analysis. Try not to proceed to the next step unless you vividly understand the movie. If it entails watching it again until you fully get it, do it. The following should form part of your findings regarding the film:

  • Title and year
  • Names of the lead actors
  • Name of the director
  • Title of the book (if based on a book)

Draft the review outline

Draft an outline with which you will write the review. The overview will help you organize your review concisely and logically. The outline is more like the skeletal frame on which the whole study will stand. A good draft will yield a perfect report, and the reverse is also true.

An outline enhances the quality of the film review, and it is essential you have your outline before you start writing. A sample outline looks like this:

1. Introduction

  • Date released
  • Background info

2. Summary of the story

Main characters and their significance in the plot

3. Analysis of the plot elements

4. creative elements, 5. opinions (add examples to back up your claims).

  • Camera techniques
  • Special effects and so on

6. Conclusion

Analyze the movie.

After fully understanding the movie, you can start its analysis. Critically evaluate the film from the beginning to the end, noting every detail. While analyzing, if you observed any confusing part, re-watch to grasp the idea portrayed there fully. After you fully understand it, then you are set to write the movie review. To write a decent analysis, you need to know how to write a film critique. Observing different camera angles can enhance the viewer's understanding and engagement with the film.

Augment Your Review with Examples

While watching the movie, your observations should be supported with examples, i.e., mention scenes the event took place. If the plot is faulty, mention it but state examples to support that claim. You can also mention poorly developed characters evident in the movie and others. Everything you observed in the film must be noted.

Examples of notables include locations, faulty or beautiful dialogues, quotes that appeal to you, poorly made speeches, bloopers, editing errors and so on. Do take note that it is not enough to make general statements about how awesome or awful the movie is, you must support your claim with evidence in the film. That is why it is called a movie review and not opinion sampling interview about the movie.

Comment on the originality of the movie

Finally mention the uniqueness of the film which you noticed in the one you’ve watched. But even if the movie happens to be a standard feature with conventional approaches, you can still mention this as well. A regular film is still a film.

Write Your Review

With all the fact gathered above, you can now use the outline to write your film review. Make every part easy and enjoyable to read. Importantly, make the introduction engaging and captivating. You should go for a grand opening that will grab the attention of any reader. A good opening keeps the reader on the article.

Let us assume your introduction is watertight and engaging; any sloppy body will lose your reader. Hence, make the body informative and engaging. The review aims to reveal as much information as possible. Therefore, do your best to give all the details in the film to the reader. Engage your analytic mind. Analyzing technical aspects such as cinematography, lighting, and sound quality is crucial for a comprehensive review.

Another essential part of the review is the closing or conclusion. Here you give your view about the movie with evidence revealed in the body. Connect the conclusion with the introduction creatively.

Edit Your Final Draft

After writing your first version of the review, you can re-write the final one after editing. Also, you should check the final draft for spelling errors, grammar mistakes, and so on. Ensure sentences connects logically to each other and watch the format used. Make a final comparison of your work with the requirement by your professor or lecturer.

With the help of free word counter check the number of words required and cut them if more than needed but if not, add relevant information to make them up. Do not add irrelevant details for the sake of space. Ensure your final submitted draft is well edited, polished, plagiarism-free and presented in the recommended format or style.

Elements of a Professional Movie Review: Plot Summary

One similar thing about these reviews is that they all should contain the same elements regardless of the genre. The elements of a movie review provide the structure on which you will base the analysis. A proper movie review format comprises the following components:

It’s not enough that the movie title appears on the headline, it must appear in the review too. Mention it in the text and feature it in the introductory paragraph; there is no harm in doing that. A movie review evaluates a particular film and helps readers decide whether to watch it.

The Storyline (Plot)

The motion picture review itself refers to the summary of the movie. Present it in a concise way for people who are yet to watch it. When you are beginning to write a movie review, never have the mindset that your professor or any would-be reader has watched the movie. Therefore, never leave important points or events out. Your job is to elucidate the movie clearly to the reader: mention the faults observed, and the filmmaker’s brilliant points or downers. Including a plot summary provides a brief overview of the film's plot, which is essential for a comprehensive review.

What is a movie analysis without the filmmaker? Your review must feature him or her. Therefore, dedicate a paragraph to him, write about the kind of personality he or she is. Reveal the filmmaker’s political stance (if relevant), background, the controversial life of the person (if he is one), etc. You can also use the opportunity to talk about other movies the director has worked on before now, and then connect it with the one under review.

Significance to your class

Relate the content of the film or documentary to your course topic. Check its importance for historical accuracy. If the film is for history class, discuss any over-dramatization noticed in the act. However, if the film was based on a book you have reviewed in one of your classes, mention the connection between the book and the movie: state variances, comparisons and other elements present in the book that are missing in the film.

Creative elements

Creative elements make or mar films, that is why filmmakers go out of their ways to add them to their movies. It is your job to state how these elements work in the plot and the film in general. For instance, comment on the effectiveness of the sound effect in enriching the viewing experience of the movie? Talk about the lighting, costume, makeup, colors, camera, etc.

The cast carry the movie; without them, there is no movie. Your review should reveal if they acted well or poorly. State if their acting was realistic or not. Do not fail to mention if they have the skills and charisma to portray the role they played. You can also state if they were the right actors to play the role they did. Furthermore, you can suggest actors who could have played certain roles better than those in the film.

Common Movie Review Mistakes You Should Avoid

After your arduous work of submitting your film report, you might be shocked to learn that your hard work received a query. You may wish to know why, well it could be because you commit any of the following common mistakes:

  • Focusing on the wrong thing: Do not shift your focus. You might want to connect the film with some historical events, however, do not give unnecessary analysis or details that are not relevant to the movie under review. For instance, avoid giving the history of motion picture unless the film is about the development of the industry. Try and be focused.
  • Alienating yourself from the review: You are the one writing the review, therefore, do not insert yourself in it. The review already has your name and signature on it so adding the possessive pronoun “I” should be discarded. The mistake most student make is writing in the first person, e.g., “I like the movie a lot, I admired the lead character,” and so on. Since the review exposes your understanding, opinions, likes, and dislikes, then it is unnecessary to insert yourself in it.
  • Not doing your research: As said earlier, watching the movie is one side of the coin, you need to check out other details. Researching the film is highly critical because it would expound to you all the nitty-gritty details, not in the motion picture.
  • Lack of evidence: In writing about a motion picture, you must substantiate any opinion or claim. You need to state your reason for liking, disliking, etc. of the film.
  • Avoid irrelevant discussion: Do not start explaining issues not related directly with the motion picture you are analyzing.
  • Unstructured review: Never write a movie review without structure, it would reveal you as an unorganized student. Hence structure your review properly by first creating the outline and organize your work. A good movie review should include a structured summary, critical analysis, and a persuasive tone to guide readers in their decision to watch the film or not.
  • Avoid Generalization and be Precise: Never generalize ideas when you write a movie review. Avoid general statements like “a fantastic movie,” “beautiful set,” “excellent acting,” and such like. Support any comment you make with evidence from the film.
  • Review lacking substance and analysis: Avoid writing a motion picture review that does not have substance or analysis. A review is a piece of educational literature, therefore, add intelligent analysis to it.
