General structure of an EngD program
An EngD program is 2 year. In the first year, you will deepen your technological knowledge, gain practical experience with the latest design methods, and work on your professional skills. And in the second year, you will do a technological design project (10 to 12 months) for a leading high-tech company or healthcare institution.
How to apply to an EngD program?
For EngD positions, an application procedure applies.
Application is open to university graduates from the Netherlands and other countries. You will at least need a Master of Science degree or equivalent, preferably in the exact sciences.
There will be an assessment and selection procedure before you can enter the program. We use strict selection criteria to ensure the required high quality. Excellent marks, motivation, and a design-oriented attitude are vitally important, as well as an excellent command of the English language.
Each EngD program has its own starting dates, admission requirements, and selection procedure. On each program page, you can find specific information regarding the procedure for that program.

EngD stories: why an EngD?

If you would like to explore how technology is applied, an EngD is a good option. If you are already certain of the research you want to conduct in a specific sub-field, a PhD program might suit you better. An EngD program is on par with a PhD program. The main difference is with PhD is the focus: a PhD is aimed to establish you as an independent researcher and an EngD prepares you for a high-level position in industry. A PhD-program takes 4 years, an EngD program 2 years.
