In many cases, the answer is no, PhD students do not pay tuition. Instead, universities often provide their doctoral students with tuition waivers and funding packages to carry them through their years of study. 

However, it's important to bear in mind that this isn't always the case and the specifics can vary greatly. Navigating PhD funding can seem daunting at first, but understanding how tuition, stipends and other sources affect the out-of-pocket cost of a PhD can help you feel more confident in your decision.

How Much Does a PhD Cost?

Contrary to popular belief, the costs of a PhD program aren't set in stone. Factors like the institution, geographic location, field of study and funding support all play a role in how much you’ll actually pay for a doctoral program. Depending on your field, some PhD programs pay you . 

To give you a clearer picture, let's break down expenses and potential support.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are typically the most substantial expense. How much you pay depends on the institution offering the program and the field of study you choose. According to the Education Data Initiative , the average cost of a PhD specifically is $106,860, while the average cost of a doctorate degree in general is higher at $150,835.

You can expect a lower cost at public institutions ($93,670 on average) compared to private universities ($129,395 on average). Considering the time to complete a doctorate degree ranges from approximately 4 to 8 years, the duration of your studies can influence the total price.

While figures like this seem substantial, it's important to remember that scholarships, grants, fellowships and assistantships significantly reduce the out-of-pocket expenses for most PhD students. For instance, the average grant aid for a doctoral degree is $16,502 annually, and 21.4% of PhD students surveyed by the Education Data Initiative offset their costs with teaching assistantships. 

As a result, actual paid expenses are often much lower than the listed tuition and fees.

Books and Materials

The cost of study materials, including textbooks and research supplies, varies depending on the specific requirements of your field of study.

For example, PhD students in Earth Sciences or Chemistry might need to invest in lab equipment and materials, while students in Humanities may require numerous books and subscriptions to academic journals.

However, it's essential to note that many programs provide funding resources that help offset or eliminate these costs. Universities often offer subsidies or funds for research materials, and there are numerous grants and scholarships specific to different fields of study. Libraries and interlibrary loan systems can also be a valuable resource for accessing required books and academic journals.

Healthcare and Living 

Cost of living and healthcare can vary greatly depending on your circumstances and location. Major cities, for example, tend to have higher living costs than smaller towns or rural areas. 

The higher expenses in cities often correlate with increased access to resources, research opportunities and a wide variety of entertainment and lifestyle choices. On the other hand, smaller towns or rural areas might offer lower cost of living and fewer distractions but may limit access to extensive resources or opportunities.

Luckily, many universities offer annual stipends as part of their financial aid packages for PhD students. These stipends are designed to help you manage your living and healthcare expenses, allowing you to concentrate on your studies and research. Financing Your Education - Doctoral Programs

A doctoral degree is a significant investment in your future, and financing your education is a critical factor to consider. While the funding we provide covers the basic standard cost of attendance determined by Stanford University for a modest life as a graduate student, accepting an offer from a doctoral program has significant personal, professional, and financial implications. Below you’ll find information on GSE and Stanford financial support for doctoral students, as well as other important considerations when it comes to financing your PhD.

Funding guarantee

Stanford GSE offers all admitted PhD students a five-year funding package that provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary which covers the standard cost of attendance. The funding is based on meeting the basic financial need of the student alone for the first five academic years of the doctoral program and entails assistantship work. The cornerstone of the GSE doctoral experience is the apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well. In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a funding package that consists of opportunities to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the coursework, students are prepared to excel as university faculty, education researchers, and leaders in the field.

All funding is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress and performance on the research and teaching assistantships. There is no separate application for this funding.

Assistantships

As part of the academic and professional training and development, students undertake assistantships which provide both salary and tuition. Research assistantships are funded by faculty research grants, other faculty funds or as needed, by the GSE Dean’s Office, and can lead to joint publications with faculty or to dissertation topics. Students who have sufficient expertise and experience may also be selected as teaching assistants for courses at the GSE or other Stanford schools and departments. Assistantships are typically secured in consultation with faculty advisors. Students work 10 hours (25% assistantship) or 20 hours (50% assistantship) a week depending on their year in the program.

• Teaching assistantships (3 types):
• Course Assistant (CA)—course preparation and grading
• Teaching Assistant (TA)—leads regularly-scheduled discussion sections
• Teaching Affiliate (TF)—full responsibility for course

Cost of attendance

Tuition depends on the units taken by the student. In addition to tuition expenses, the cost of attendance of a PhD program involves living expenses such as rent, food, and transportation. The sum of tuition and non-tuition expenses constitutes the standard cost of attendance. 

As you consider applying to graduate school, you can use the standard cost of attendance of your program —plus any additional expenses you might have—to create your financial plan, keeping in mind that tuition and non-tuition expenses of the standard cost of attendance are set by the university on an annual basis.

What you can do now to prepare financially if admitted

• Prepare for how your standard of living may change as a graduate student, especially if you are coming from a full-time job.
• Consider the length of your program, any dependents, existing debt, and additional financial commitments you may have. Students with children may review Stanford support programs for families.
• If you have personal or special circumstances that require additional expenses above and beyond the standard cost of attendance, plan accordingly.
• Start saving as much as you are able to cover any unexpected expenses you may incur while in graduate school.
• Familiarize yourself with federal as well as private student loans, their interest rates, fees, repayment options, deferment policies, and eligibility requirements, so that you are informed if you need to borrow.
• Be ready to cover all initial expenses, since fellowships and stipends will not be disbursed until a few weeks into your first quarter. Onboarding into a PhD program often requires up front out of pocket expenses for relocation.

Additional GSE resources

Once PhD students matriculate, the GSE has a variety of resources available to support academic work and unanticipated needs.

Students are eligible for up to three travel fellowships during their time at GSE if they are attending a conference or other professional development opportunity.

GSE Student Emergency Fund assists graduate students who experience a financial emergency or unanticipated expenses causing financial hardship. This fund is meant to support those who cannot reasonably resolve their financial difficulty through fellowships, loans, or personal resources. 

GSE Dissertation Support Grants help advanced PhD students who require additional financial support for dissertation research activities. These grants, available at up to $6,500 total per student, are available to students who do not have access to other funds to cover their dissertation costs.

Stanford University resources

Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program aims to prepare the next generation of global leaders to address the increasingly complex challenges facing the world. The program selects up to 100 students each year and provides three years of financial support that is integrated into the GSE’s funding package for PhD students.

Vice Provost for Graduate Education awards various fellowships for doctoral students and maintains a list of other Stanford fellowships that students may consider.

Cardinal Care subsidy is an automatic university-wide subsidy program for graduate students. Vaden Health Center manages the university’s Cardinal Care student health insurance.

Stanford Financial Aid Office oversees a number of financial support programs specifically for graduate students with challenging financial situations. 

Additional hourly work is available to students who wish to work for pay as "casual labor" at Stanford up to eight hours a week, provided work does not adversely affect the academic program. Requires approval from the student’s advisor and the Academic Services team.

Other funding sources

External fellowships are integrated into the GSE’s funding package. There are many funding opportunities offered outside of Stanford. The GSE admissions team has compiled an external fellowships and grants document for you to explore, though you should plan to do your own research as well. International students can find additional sources of funding on the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Funding for U.S. Study website and this publication .

Stanford is committed to providing benefits through the Yellow Ribbon Program of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® to students in degree-seeking programs. GSE students who qualify for Chapter 33 benefits at the 100% level may be eligible for additional funding through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Please note that for GSE students receiving tuition fellowship funding, the Yellow Ribbon match may reduce and in some cases replace institutional grants and scholarships. International students are guaranteed the same funding package as domestic students. However, there may be restrictions regarding the number of hours and opportunities to work during the summer months. To learn more, please contact the Bechtel International Center .

To meet immigration regulations, international students must show proof of adequate financial support to cover the length of time of their graduate program. While international students are not eligible for U.S. federal loan programs, they may qualify for private/alternative loans. Many lenders, however, require that a U.S. citizen or permanent resident co-sign the loan. The Prescribed Fees* for an Indian National candidate is as under :

• Semester fee of Ph.D. in Built Environment will be as mentioned under this program in the 'Ph.D programs offered' list
• Fee will be paid semester wise for the two semesters in a year. Enrolled scholar will pay fee for the minimum period (minimum 3 years for Ph.D full time and 3.5 years for Ph.D part time) and for the period they stay enrolled until thesis submission, upper limit being 6 years
• Fee concession to Amity Academic/ Non-academic Staff, JRF/SRF/RA/ARF/SARF employed in the University, national level examination scholarship holders or scholars from all such labs where Amity University has Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), if applicable, is allowed by the University on case to case basis and as per the system in vogue).
• The Security Deposit will be refunded after completion of Ph.D.

* Fee is subject to revision from time to time as decided by the University.

Fees required by a school that are charged to every student – such as to cover the cost of technology and health and wellness – are typically broken down in the bill for tuition and other expenses.

When thinking about the total cost of attending college, families may budget for tuition , housing and meal plans . However, there are also added fees to be aware of.

"These items are going to be disclosed, but students need to read through the material to make sure that they are aware of what the fees are or if (they) can be waived," says Paul Negrete, executive director of university financial aid services at Rice University in Texas.

Mandatory fees can typically be covered by financial aid or student loans, as they are part of a student's total cost of attendance , experts say. To be eligible for any student aid, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, must first be filed.

The only fees that can't be included in financial aid eligibility "are things that are more discretionary, like maybe a club sports fee or sorority or fraternity dues," says Shannon Vasconcelos, senior director of college finance at Bright Horizons College Coach, an education consulting company. "Those aren't required. That's your choice."

Here are examples of 12 fees that college students may need to pay that could surprise them.

Health Insurance

Most colleges require students to have health insurance. And unless paperwork is submitted to opt out – indicating coverage under another plan – students will automatically be billed.

"The college health insurance plans tend to be expensive," Vasconcelos says. "So often, students can find better care at a lower cost with their parents' health insurance plan if they are still covered. Generally, students can be covered up until the age of 26."

Environmental Fees

Some colleges charge an environmental services fee to cover sustainability initiatives on campus, like recycling. The cost is usually minimal.

The University of Texas at Austin charges each student $5 per semester and $2.50 for summer sessions, while Bowie State University in Maryland charges $2 per semester to support green projects and reduce the campus community carbon footprint.

Course Fees

Depending on their major , students may face added charges for certain classes during registration, such as voice lessons or science classes with a lab component.

At Boston College in Massachusetts, for instance, lab fees (which pay for things like microscopes and petri dishes) for biology, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, and physics classes cost $360. Meanwhile, fees for studio art, music and film classes range widely from $55 to $765.

First-Year Student Fees

Some schools charge a fee specifically for first-year students, as their transition to college often includes freshman seminars and classes. Orientation may be included in a first-year fee or it could be a separate expense.

Prices vary widely per campus. The University of Arizona bills its freshmen $10 in the fall and spring to support first-year student support programs and services, while William & Mary in Virginia charges a one-time $419 fee for all new students.

International Student Fees

International students may have to pay a fee to cover orientation, academic resources and events. International students at New York University , for instance, pay $90 each semester or term.

There may also be other expenses required for international students to study in the U.S., including the government's SEVIS fee – which ranges from $220 to $350 depending on status – and a VISA application fee.

Technology Fees

Computer labs, laptop rentals and campuswide Wi-Fi are provided at many colleges and universities and are incorporated into an overall technology fee.

A printing plan – in which students can print up to a certain number of pages a semester, and incur costs after that limit is met – may also be included in that fee or charged separately.

"I'm sure kids these days don't print quite as much as they used to," says Joe Dobrota, director of financial aid at William & Mary. "It's handing papers electronically now, but there might be a printing cost that comes up."

Health and Wellness Fees

Some colleges also charge a mandatory fee related to health and wellness, which funds programs that support alcohol and drug awareness and other health initiatives at the college.

Tufts University in Massachusetts charges an annual "health and wellness fee" of $1,022 to give all students access to counseling and mental health services , medical visits and health programs and prevention initiatives. However, items such as laboratory tests, vaccinations, X-ray imaging, ambulance transport and prescribed medications are not covered by this nonnegotiable fee.

Student Organization Fees

Colleges offer dozens of student clubs for a variety interests, such as theater, poetry, drawing and intramural sports teams. Dues set by students usually come with membership, experts say.

Membership fees for sororities and fraternities can be expensive compared to other types of student organizations. Average expenses for new members at Ball State University in Indiana are $900 for sororities and $800 for fraternities. That amount decreases after the first year.

Transportation Fees

Some colleges and universities offer students shuttle buses for traveling around campus and to some off-campus locations nearby, and this fee varies among schools.

Students at the University of Akron in Ohio not eligible for the Tuition Guarantee Program – which provides fixed tuition, room and board, and select fees – are charged a $175 transportation fee for each of the fall and spring semesters, and $120 for the summer. Students taking more than five credit hours receive benefits such as a parking permit and access to the campus shuttle service. The school says the fee also helps pay for maintenance, utility costs and debt service of campus parking facilities.

"I think students should keep transportation costs in mind," Vasconcelos says. "If they had been living at home and borrowing their parents' car, but now they are going away to school without a car and they have to pay for cabs, Ubers or public transportation, it's something to think about – whether it's charged by the school or not."

Parking Fees

Having a car on campus can be convenient for students, but it also adds additional expenses. On many campuses, students with cars are required to buy a parking permit to avoid accumulating tickets. There could be a price difference for commuter students compared to residential students, so be sure to buy the right type of pass, Dobrota says.

Resident student annual permits at the University of Maryland, College Park – which allows students to park their cars on campus 24/7 – cost $701. Commuter students are not allowed to park overnight and pay $362.

Before bringing a car to campus, Dobrota advises students to check their colleges' policies. Some schools don't allow first-year students to bring their cars.

Building Fees

Though not as common, some colleges may include a building fee in the tuition bill to cover the cost of campus expansion or construction, Vasconcelos says.

At Calhoun Community College in Alabama, a $12 "special building fee" is charged to all students each semester to "secure bonded indebtedness for new construction of facilities," according to the school.

Graduation Fees

Colleges charge fees to students not just when they enter, but on the back end when they depart. Graduating seniors often have to pay a fee, which is said to offset the price of commencement logistics, caps and gowns, and the creation of diplomas.

The College of Charleston in South Carolina, for instance, charges $25 to all students who apply for graduation – regardless of whether they plan to participate in the commencement ceremony. And students who are late with the application pay an additional $25.

"Be on time for things like registration or when bills are due, because there are late registration fees or late payment fees that could be added," Negrete of Rice University says.

In my experience, I noticed that some PhD research scholars feel to cheat the university by not paying them since nobody has asked for it. But it is an illusion. At a later stage when you are jumping to yet another semester, you will be asked and you will be in a state where you must pay the PhD tuition of two continuous semesters.

What happens if you do not pay PhD fees in India?

If you do not pay PhD fees in India, you will be not allowed to submit your thesis at the end or sometimes there is a stringent action of terminating your PhD registration totally. Not paying fee means you are giving an indication to the college that you are not interested to proceed further in your PhD and you are giving a chance to terminate your PhD admission for not paying fees.

What happens if you pay only half of the PhD Fees?

This does not happen usually. If you have paid only half of the fees, you need to request your administration to consider your payment or ask for a debt from the university itself from the finance department.  No university rejects you for asking some money as a debt to pay the fee. There are also many bank loan options available within the college or from outside itself. Can you pay fees after PhD?

No, you cannot pay after PhD as there is no way to submit your PhD dissertation without paying fees. Paying fees after PhD in Indian Universities are not acceptable. Even throughout the world, it is quite impractical to think that way. So I suggest not having such desires to grab fees and save some money for you. After all, PhD is more valuable than fees.  Try to save money even before you take admission into PhD course. Always have a future prospect in your mind. This way you can become successful in paying the whole fees in time without any delay.

How to pay PhD fees in India easily by working

In India, you will be working as a teaching assistant and earning a good amount.  A small amount of saving every month would easily drop a balance to pay for the upcoming semester fee for PhD.  A teaching assistant in India gets around 15000 inr to 25000 inr and it depends upon the subject that he is teaching. This amount is called PhD stipend which can be easily saved to pay PhD fees in the future. So there is always the right path if you want to proceed.

Interest on Federal Student Loans Is Rising to 6.53%

The rate for undergraduate loans is up from 5.5 percent this past school year and higher than it has been in more than a decade.

This has already been a challenging year for college applicants, starting with the problems with a crucial federal form that delayed financial aid offers. Now, students and families have more to worry about: The cost of borrowing for college for the next school year is rising to the highest rate in more than a decade.

The interest rate on new federal student loans for undergraduates will be 6.53 percent as of July 1, up from 5.5 percent this year, the Education Department announced last week.

Rates on loans for graduate and professional students will rise to 8.08 percent. And rates on PLUS loans — extra financing available to parents of undergraduate students as well as to graduate students — will increase to 9.08 percent.

Rates on federal student loans are based on a formula, set by Congress, that takes the high yield on the 10-year Treasury note from an auction in May, plus a fixed, added rate, depending on the type of loan. The yield at the May 8 auction was 4.483 percent, plus an added 2.05 percent for undergraduate loans. (The yield last year in the Treasury auction was 3.448. Add-on rates are higher for graduate and PLUS loans.)

Interest rates generally have remained high as the Federal Reserve has battled inflation . Still, the new student loan rates seem especially steep compared with just a few years ago, said Mark Kantrowitz, a financial-aid expert. In the 2020-21 academic year, the rate on undergraduate loans was 2.75 percent. Still, rates were as high as 14 percent in the early 1980s, Mr. Kantrowitz said.

The new rates apply to loans borrowed from July 1 through June 2025 and remain fixed for the life of the loan. They don’t apply to loans that students have already taken out.

The increase translates into roughly an extra $5 in the monthly payment on $10,000 in debt over a 10-year repayment term, Mr. Kantrowitz calculated.

The rates are increasing amid rising concern about student debt and the high cost of college. As of early 2024, almost 43 million borrowers held an average of about $37,850 in federal student debt, according to Federal Student Aid , an office of the Education Department.

In a survey published Thursday by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, nearly half of American adults (47 percent) said a college degree was worth the cost but only if someone didn’t have to take out loans to attend. Fewer than a quarter (22 percent) said it was worth the cost even if someone had to borrow.

Pew also analyzed federal data and found that households headed by a young high school graduate had a typical net worth of $30,700 in 2022, compared with $120,200 for those headed by a young college graduate.

Michele Shepard Zampini, senior director of college affordability at the nonprofit Institute for College Access and Success, said students should keep the new federal loan rates — and borrowing for college — in perspective.

“The rates are higher than we’d like, but it’s not a deal breaker,” she said. “I’d never want to see someone not go to college just because it meant taking on federal student loans,” she added.

The institute advises borrowers to “borrow what you need” to cover costs and to participate fully in college, Ms. Zampini said. In general, you can borrow up to $31,000 in federal loans as an undergraduate student who is dependent on your family for support. (The amount you can borrow is capped each year, and limits are higher for independent students.)

Some students may try to borrow much less, thinking they can work more to cover costs. But that often “works to the detriment of the student,” Ms. Zampini said, because students may have to work so much they fall behind in their classes. “It’s definitely a balance.”

Students should compare the costs of different colleges and consider choosing less expensive alternatives — perhaps a state school rather than a private one — to manage their costs, Ms. Zampini said. Check a school’s graduation rates and career outlook. If students generally take longer than four years to graduate, the degree will cost more money. (One place to look this up is the Education Department’s online College Scorecard .)

The new, more generous federal student loan repayment plan, known as SAVE, offers a “safety valve” if you worry about affording your loan payments, Ms. Zampini said. With SAVE , which stands for Saving on a Valuable Education, payments are based on earnings and household size. After you make monthly payments for a certain number of years — as few as 10, depending on the amount borrowed — any remaining balance is forgiven.

For some low-income workers, payments under SAVE can be reduced to zero. And if a borrower’s monthly payment doesn’t cover the interest owed, the Education Department will cancel the uncovered portion of the interest. The loan balance doesn’t grow because of unpaid interest.

Saving in a 529 plan can help reduce the amount borrowed. A 529 plan is a tax-favored savings account intended to help cover the cost of college. Contributions to the accounts, named for part of the tax code, grow tax free and can be withdrawn tax free to pay for costs like tuition, housing, meals and books. (There’s no federal tax deduction for 529 contributions, but many states offer tax breaks.)

“529s are a good tool in the toolbox,” said Tony Kure, managing director for the northeastern Ohio market at the wealth management firm Johnson Investment Counsel.

Mr. Kure recommends opening a 529 when a child is born to give as much time as possible for the funds to grow before college. If you have more than one child, he advises opening a separate account for each.

Many 529 plans offer promotions or incentives to save during May, so now is a good time to research accounts if you’ve been considering opening one.

How much should I borrow for college?

Aim for total student debt that is less than your expected annual starting salary, Mr. Kantrowitz said. If your debt is less than your income, he said, you should be able to repay your student loans in 10 years or less. To get an idea of what you might earn, check out the Labor Department ’s data on pay by occupation. Another place to look is a report on pay based on college majors published last year by HEA Group, a research and consulting firm.

Can I get better rates on private student loans?

Rates on some private student loans — those offered by banks rather than the federal government — may be competitive with the new federal rates for borrowers with stellar credit (scores of 780 or higher), Mr. Kantrowitz said. But private loans can be riskier because they lack the protections offered by federal loans, like the ability to seek a pause in payments during a financial setback, payment plans tied to your income and options to have some of the debt forgiven.

You can generally deduct up to $2,500 in interest paid on federal and private student loans, even if you don’t itemize on your return, Mr. Kantrowitz said.

The I.R.S. estimates that 940,000 people who didn’t file their tax returns  in 2020 are due back money. The deadline for filing to get it is May 17.

The New York Medical College (NYMC) and Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) communities buzzed with excitement and anticipation as the Class of 2024 marked their achievements in medicine, biomedical science, the health sciences, and dentistry. Leadership, faculty, and loved ones gathered to honor the graduates this week as members of the Class of 2024 reveled in their accomplishments and looked forward with enthusiasm to the adventures that await them. The graduates radiated pride as they affirmed their dedication to their chosen professions. The four ceremonies— the School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) and School of Medicine (SOM) on May 21 at The Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase College; TCDM on May 22  at SUNY Purchase; and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBMS) on May 23 on the NYMC campus at the John W. Nevins, M.D. ’44 Auditorium —conferred 193 doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees; 46 doctor of physical therapy (D.P.T.) degrees; five doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees; 78 master of science (M.S.) degrees; 42 master of public health (M.P.H.) degrees; seven doctor of public health (Dr.P.H.) degrees; and 117 doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S.).

School of Health Sciences and Practice  

The festivities began with Douglas L. York, M.P.H. ’91, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor of public health, bearing the ceremonial mace, which incorporates a portrait of NYMC founder William Cullen Bryant, as SHSP graduates celebrated their entrance into the fields of speech-language pathology, physical therapy, and public health. Grand Marshal Monica McHenry, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, professor of speech-language pathology, led the program with opening remarks before Rabbi Baruch Fogel, adjunct assistant professor of clinical biomedical humanities and ethics, delivered the invocation.       Student commencement speaker Abby Cofsky, M.P.H. ‘24, shared wisdom from her career change from corporate management to public health and reflected on starting at NYMC during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Embrace every step of your zig zag, unpredictable journey,” said Cofsky. “Life paths aren’t supposed to be straight lines. Even our missed steps, dead ends, and our losses lead us to other places. It all gets added to our experience banks and make us broader, deeper, more colorful people.”  

Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of SHSP, vice president of government affairs, and professor of pediatrics and public health, took the stage and introduced SHSP commencement speaker James V. McDonald, M.D., M.P.H., health commissioner for the New York State Department of Health, who spoke to the graduates about finding and maintaining joy in their careers.   

“As you graduate today, whether you’re helping people walk and talk, whether you’re helping people prevent problems, whether you’re finding data that shows us where we’re going, I hope you recognize the power of passion that is yours to find,” said Dr. McDonald. “I hope you find a purpose in your work and realize it’s often not about you, it’s about your other-oriented mission that will endure you throughout your career.”  

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, conferred the degrees of the SHSP students, while Dr. Amler presented the diplomas to the Class of 2024 and sent them on their way to a new chapter in their lives.  

School of Medicine  

The energy kept buzzing as SOM graduates paraded in with their tassels swaying and their tams tilting, soaking in the cheers and applause from their excited loved ones. Leadership and faculty were led by mace bearer Michael H. Gewitz, M.D., professor and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics.  Grand Marshal Christa N. Grant, M.D., clinical associate professor of surgery and pediatrics, led the proceedings that began with an invocation by Rabbi Moshe Krupka, M.S., executive vice president of Touro University.       Ashley Sacks, M.D. ‘24, proudly delivered the student address. “What I hope for our class is that we use our knowledge not as an endpoint for our thought processes, but as a foundation upon which we build new questions, we push back against the norms, and we lean into the discomfort of doubt,” said Dr. Sacks. “Medicine is beautiful because it is constantly in motion –   sometimes, that what makes it so challenging – but it forces us to stay on our toes and continuously ask ourselves – can we find ways to do procedures with less harm, to evaluate labs with less bias, to treat our patients with the absolute highest standard of care – and throughout all of that – can we do so with compassion and with kindness?”      Dr. Halperin welcomed SOM’s commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient of the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, Steven L. Kanter, M.D., executive director of the Alliance of Academic Health Centers International and special advisor to the president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges and executive director of Alliance of Academic Health Centers International. He remarked about the advent of the new phase of the new doctors’ lives. “Always remember that providing health care is only one aspect of being a physician,” said Dr. Kanter. “As physicians, we are healers, helpers, carers, advocates for the sick, and advocates for the help of all. And we do this as we strive to be ever wiser scientists and humanists.”      Dr. Kadish took to the podium to offer advice for the future physicians, who persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic, the increasing and ever-evolving role of artificial intelligence in medicine, and upheaval in American society, before conferring the degrees for the future physicians. “I urge each of you to not lose focus on the fact that as physicians, you have a unique privilege and responsibility to continue to work to make the lives of your patients and the science we all hold dear better despite those distractions,” said Dr. Kadish.      Following the administration of the Hippocratic Oath by Neil W. Schluger, dean of the SOM and professor of medicine, the military oath of office was given by Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., FAAN, FAES, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean for student affairs, and associate professor of neurology and medicine, to U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Briana Comuniello, M.D.’ 24, and U.S. Air Force Second Lieutenant Bardia Khandehroo, M.D. ’24, were promoted to captain.  

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences  

The celebrations continued for the GSBMS graduates with Julie S. Di Martino, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology and anatomy, bearing the ceremonial mace. Grand Marshal Chioma M. Okeoma, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of research in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology, led the program before an invocation by Rabbi Fogel. Recognizing academic excellence and achievement, awards were presented by Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., M.P.H. ‘23, dean of GSBMS, professor of cell anatomy and biology, and interim chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.      Student speaker Tara Jarboe, M.S. ‘19, Ph.D. ‘24, reflected on her time at the College, highlighting her collaborative experiences with faculty and students in the lab. She also offered her classmates insightful advice for the numerous paths they will pursue after graduation. “Congratulations to all of my fellow graduates in the master’s and Ph.D. programs,” said Dr. Jarboe. “Congratulations on this major milestone for all of us and my most heartfelt wishes for us to continue ahead on the path that keeps your passion for science alive.”  

Dr. Halperin took to the podium to bestow an honoary Doctor of Science degree on former SOM dean Jerry L. Nadler, M.D., MACP, FAHA, FACE, associate chief of staff for research at Northern California VA Health System, recognizing his visionary leadership, dedication to advancing medicine, and remarkable contributions in diabetes research.       Dr. Holz then introduced the GSBMS commencement speaker Brooke Grindlinger, Ph.D., renowned microbiologist and chief scientific officer at The New York Academy of Sciences, who spoke about the ability of the graduates to emphasize real-world impact with their new degrees in biomedical sciences. “Your unique experiences and viewpoints are unmatched,” said Grindlinger. “So, embrace boldness in your ideas, cultivate a strong viewpoint, seize control of your professional journey, and fearlessly stand out.”  

Dr. Halperin followed with conferring the degrees of the GSBMS students and Dr. Holz proudly presented the diplomas to the graduates.  

Touro College of Dental Medicine  

The TCDM Class of 2024 dental students marched down the aisles of SUNY Purchase waving to their proud family and friends. Bert Goldfinger, D.D.S., director of preclinical education, co-director of professional licensure examinations, and associate professor of dental medicine, commenced the program as mace bearer, with an invocation by Rabbi Krupka following afterwards.  

Aaron Yancoskie, D.D.S., assistant dean for academic affairs, director of oral medicine, and associate professor of dental medicine, welcomed commencement speaker Prabha Krishnan, D.D.S., president elect of the New York State Dental Association, who emphasized the impact of dentistry beyond the smile.       “Your patients may forget what brought them to see you in the first place,” said Dr. Krishnan. “They may forget the procedure you performed to alleviate their pain. Yet, what they will remember is whether you put them first. Did you listen to them? Did you earn their trust? And did you protect it? These are the qualities that will take you from good to great.”      Dr. Kadish conferred the degree of D.D.S. for the Class of 2024, as Ronnie Myers, D.D.S., dean of TCDM and professor of dental medicine, presented the candidates.      After each ceremony concluded, Dr. Halperin imparted a meaningful charge and shared parting words with the newly graduated NYMC and TCDM alumni.   

“As you go forward, I charge you to commit yourselves to the highest professional and ethical standards, to render to each person the dignity that is rightfully theirs, to remember that you are stewards of the connected human family, to be compassionate to those in need, and to remember us with pride – as we will proudly remember you,” said Dr. Halperin . 

Amidst the cheers and laughter, the air was filled with an overwhelming sense of joy and camaraderie as graduates basked in the company of their cherished families and friends, posing for photos to immortalize this milestone achievement.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
