I Tested Three AI Essay-writing Tools, and Here’s What I Found

An over-the-shoulder photograph of a college student writing an essay on a laptop

Writing essays can be draining, tedious, and difficult, even for me—and I write all day long for a living. If writing isn’t your special skill, it’s even harder, which is why there are so many sites and products out there that are designed to help you get your homework done. Some of them are pretty unethical, and I’m not going to recommend hiring someone else to write your papers for you, but there are some cool AI tools that can give you a hand that are worth considering. (The essay-writing businesspeople are probably using these, too, so you’re better off eliminating the middleman and using them on your own.)

The best AI essay-helper tools

I have an essay due next week on the history and impact of a federal law, 21 U.S.C. S856, which outlaws the operation of any building where drugs are made or used. I won’t lie: I’m excited to work on it this weekend, but that’s just me. I tested out a few of the more popular AI essay-helper tools, pretending I wasn’t excited about it, to see how they worked. Here’s my assessment.

First up was Grammarly , which prompted me to fill out a personalization quiz before I could use it. I told the site I was a grad student, interested in improving the vocabulary I use in my work, and looking to brainstorm topics for my essay. I used the text-input section to type a quick introductory paragraph and selected “Generative AI” from the list of options. When I hit the “Improve It” button, Grammarly showed me a revised version that added a bunch of words, but still said the same thing as my more concise entry. To me, that’s annoying, but if you’re trying to hit a word count, this could be useful. I was also given options like “Make it assertive,” “Make it persuasive,” and “Make it confident.” When I selected “Make it more detailed,” the generative AI did expand the information pretty significantly, but it didn’t add any citations and I’m not convinced it drew on material outside of what I inputted. When I hit “Make it persuasive,” the AI automatically assumed the bias should fall in favor of the law, but when I added more detail to my original paragraph, suggesting for argument’s sake that the law has curtailed efforts to reduce drug overdoses throughout the country, the AI assistant said, “Grammarly assistance is unavailable for this prompt because it may result in sensitive content.”

Overall, this wasn’t great for my needs, as my topic's content was too “sensitive” and the generative AI really only added a bunch of words. This one would be most useful for someone trying to hit a word count.

Next I tested Cramly , which I hadn’t heard of before. Before upgrading to a $4/month plan, you do get to try five free prompts, so I pasted my basic intro paragraph in there and, after a few seconds, got five paragraphs in return. It was obvious the AI was pulling from external sources somehow, as it mentioned fines and prison sentences associated with the law that I hadn’t specified, but it didn’t actually cite those sources. Still, the information it provided was helpful, so this one would be great if you’re not sure how to frame or expand on a topic and need a general idea of what your essay could look like. You’ll just have to go through everything it spits back at you and look it up independently, finding solid sourcing.

EssayGenius

EssayGenius is extremely easy to use. It asked me to type what I’m writing about into a box. I simply inputted the name of the law and, about 10 seconds later, got 10 paragraphs back, some with subheadings like “historical background” and “implications in criminal law and public policy.” Again, there were no citations here, but the service provided not only a lot of details that could be used as a springboard to find more, but a solid outline for what the paper could look like. The AI played both sides, objectively presenting the cases for and against the law, then provided a conclusion that made it easy to narrow down where to go with the topic. Impressively, I was able to generate all that for free, but if you want to write up to 10 essays per month, it’ll cost you $9.99 a month.

Finally, I tried out JotBot , which I have seen advertised on social media. It asked me what I was writing about, plus if I wanted an outline, but also gave me an opportunity to upload my old essays so it could replicate my writing style. As scary as it was, the paragraphs it generated after reading some of my older work did sound more like me than standard AI does. It give me subtopic suggestions, like “impact,” “historical background,” and “controversies,” which I could select from a sidebar and, if I liked the paragraph it wrote, drag into the essay itself. From there, I could accept or reject sentences one by one as it generated new ones. I could write in the essay editing section, too, and it generated more suggestions based on what I was typing. Frankly, this one was really cool and I can see how it would help beat writer’s block with ease, since you can type and get suggestions as you go. There was a learning curve, though, and I didn’t realize how quickly I was blowing through my 10 free daily “credits,” since it’s unclear what, exactly, costs credits and how many it costs to, say, accept one suggestion. You can unlock unlimited credits, unlimited autocomplete, unlimited sources, and more for $14 per month.

Conclusions

Overall, EssayGenius and JotBot were the best AI tools I tested. I was impressed by EssayGenius’s ability to research the topic on its own and JotBot’s mimicry of my own writing style. They do cost money, but that might be worth it if you’re someone who struggles with idea generation, outline creation, or getting into the flow of writing overall.

Bear in mind these are not meant to churn out entire essays for you and you shouldn’t use them to do that. I don’t mean because it’s unethical, but I mean because it’s pretty easy for professors to catch you doing it . Even if you do use an AI tool to generate a whole paragraph or more, try to write it in your own voice and think of it more as a way to study and learn about your topic than have the writing done for you.

Or, pay nothing and just use ChatGPT to generate outline ideas. I do that all the time and never have to worry about getting in trouble, cheating myself out of an education, or paying for anything. I just asked ChatGPT to generate an outline for an essay on 21 U.S.C. §856 and its impact on American harm reduction efforts and got eight sections, each with three subsections, and an easy roadmap I could follow to write my paper on my own. Doing it this way ensures I’ll actually research and learn about the topic, which is important to me, but also avoid the risk of going down for plagiarism or cheating, which is probably important to you.

No matter what you end up doing, always run your work through a plagiarism checker (like Grammarly’s , which is better than its AI essay-writing tools) and ZeroGPT to make sure you’re not turning in something that’s going to get you in trouble.

Opinion | joseph vukov: worried about ai here are things to know.

Author

The same goes for generative artificial intelligence. Once you know where to look, even the most powerful AI stops looking like magic. No string here — instead, look at the AI’s training data.

Training data is the information used to construct an AI. After programmers feed an AI a massive diet of training data, the AI learns to identify patterns in it and then generates output. The more data you feed an AI, the more subtle the patterns it can recognize and generate. That’s why ChatGPT can churn out travel itineraries, B-level college essays and social media marketing campaigns.

In all the hubbub around AI, it can be tempting to think that AI will eclipse us. That it will expand infinitely, until it can do all that a college-educated human can do — and more. That it will take over not only the jobs of data crunchers and coders and copy editors, but also poets and artists and high-level managers.

We are probably right to worry about some of our jobs. But many predictions about AI are overblown. The technology faces crucial limitations.

First limitation

AI is limited by the data on which it is trained. Even if you were to train an AI on the entire internet, the AI would miss out on a lot: thoughts jotted down on a napkin; late-night conversations with a college roommate; that week in 2018 you spent camping in the Rockies; and the feeling of seeing your grandma after a long time apart. None of that is part of the AI’s world.

Second limitation

AI lacks critical thinking. Can an image-generating AI churn out several versions of a cat in a fedora painted in the style of Rembrandt? Yup. But can an AI discern which of the paintings is better than the others? No.

Yes, AI can generate incredible content. But it cannot evaluate the content it creates. At least not in the way you and I can.

There’s a mistake many new AI users make. They assume it can simply replace entire swaths of human expertise — such as creating art, writing code or penning essays. This is a misguided assumption. Will AI streamline tasks and eliminate some jobs? Likely, yes. Yet the most effective users of AI are those who are already experts in the relevant task.

In other words, AI can write code, craft text and generate images, but it is most effective if you already know what you are doing. For example, I have friends who write code, and they tell me that the code AI writes is good but needs to be consolidated and cleaned up by a human.

Likewise, as a writer, I believe that AI can be a helpful tool. It can generate ideas, word choices and metaphors. But for an undergraduate churning out a last-minute essay, AI will be far less useful. The essay won’t come together without someone to form it.

Tip of the iceberg

Since I started writing about AI, I get asked a lot about the Terminator. Are cyborgs going to take over? No. Yet we should still worry about AI. It is poised to take over large swaths of human activity and, in doing so, erode our individual and shared humanity.

The truth is that generative AI is only the tip of the iceberg. The influence and potential dangers of the AI revolution go far beyond the flashy, generative versions.

For example, AI has been making a splash in health care. Applications can discern subtle differences in radiology scans and can be used to triage patients and complete physician’s notes. They can be used to craft care plans for patients upon discharge. Used correctly, AI could deliver more effective health care. But used improperly, AI-powered health care could exacerbate problems in delivery, rob medicine of the human element and reduce our view of a person to a collection of data.

AI is also in Big Retail. You’ve likely bought a book on the recommendation of Amazon’s algorithm, viewed videos based on YouTube’s suggestions and clicked on an ad for a product you never would have looked up on your own. In all these instances, AI predicts your preferences. Scarier still, the AI helps shape your preferences in the first place, creating a desire and then immediately offering the opportunity to satisfy it. In each of these interactions, we lose a sliver of our humanity. We cede our desires to the algorithms. We become more materialistic and less free.

We become, in a word, less human.

AI does, indeed, threaten our humanity. Not in the form of a cyborg but with the promise of a funny YouTube video or a new pair of jeans.

Reflect carefully, now, on values and our humanity

In the early days of the internet, when it was slow-moving and quirky, we couldn’t have imagined smartphones, streaming platforms and online banking becoming part of our daily lives.

Similarly, AI is finding its legs. Like the internet, AI is poised to infiltrate our lives in myriad and unexpected ways. We cannot predict precisely how or where AI will take up residence in 50 years.

How to prepare for this kind of infiltration? By reflecting carefully on AI now. By identifying those areas of lives we want to retain as human spaces and those we are comfortable ceding to the AI algorithms. By reflecting carefully on our values, and what it means to be human in the first place.

AI is here to stay. We need to ensure that humanity as we know it is here to stay as well.

5 Best AI Essay Checker Tools

essay ai reddit

What to know

  • With students using generative AI tools for homework, it has become challenging for educators to discern between human-generated and AI-generated essays.
  • AI essay checker tools have been developed to address this issue, and this article presents the top 5 options, namely GPTZero, Turnitin, Winston AI, Content Scale, and OpenAI’s Text Classifier.
  • When selecting an AI essay checker tool, one should consider its reliability, cost-effectiveness, free features, sentence flagging, and other useful features.

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Bing have put the academic world in a pickle. Where it has simplified the task of writing essays for students, the task of teachers is made all the more complicated as they try to find out who’s using these tools and who’s not.

Fortunately for teachers, if AI can automate essay writing, then it can also automate AI detection . But which AI essay checker tools can you rely on? In this guide, we take a look at the top 5 AI detection tools that will let you identify if an essay is written by a human or AI.

What are AI Essay Checker Tools?

While the discussion rages over whether using generative AI tools like ChatGPT is really plagiarism, teachers and students as well have begun using AI essay checker tools to ensure that they’re all playing their responsible parts in their education and not looking to cheat.

AI essay checkers are basically plagiarism checkers that can detect if the sentences in an essay are generated by AI tools like ChatGPT. Depending on how they’re modeled and trained, they can either be decently reliable or ridiculed with false positives that will flag even human-generated content as AI. AI essay checker tools are not always going to work, and they may not always be 100%. Playing catch-up with these AI technologies is not easy and will inevitably lead to half-baked AI detection tools.

But that is not to say that there aren’t a few that have managed to crack the code and developed models that work well enough to catch AI-generated content while giving human-written content a pass. Below we highlight the top 5 AI essay checker tools that belong to this category.

Here is what we think are the best AI essay checker tools going around right now.

GPTZero is a Reddit favorite, not least because it is free to use for everyone, not just the professors. And it’s fairly easy to use too. Just visit GPTZero, paste the content (or upload a DOC, PDF, or TXT file), and click on ‘Get Results’ to know if the content is written by a human or an AI.

essay ai reddit

Besides checking for AI-generated content, GPTZero will also provide additional stats about the essay, such as the level of randomness and perplexity in the text. Low scores in these categories are clear red flags that the writing is generated by AI.

Like many other AI detectors, its accuracy can be off depending on the level of analysis. So, a complete document-level analysis is better than a paragraph-level, which is better than a sentence-level analysis. Unlike Turnitin, GPTZero “is not trained to identify AI-generated text after it has been heavily modified after generation…” So that’s something useful to know, for both the teachers and the students using it. There is a paid subscription plan for teachers as well, but the free version has much that many users will think is enough.

  • Free to use
  • Ability to upload document files
  • Provides stats for ingenuity and complexity.
  • Will highlight AI-generated content in yellow.
  • Checks up to only 5000 characters in the free version
  • Batch file upload limited to 3
  • Can have problems with edited AI-generated text.

2. Turnitin

Turnitin is easily one of the best of the lot. It doesn’t claim to deliver 100% accuracy for everything that you upload for checking. But whatever it does flag as AI-generated, it gets it right 99% of the time. In a YouTube demonstration , Turnitin’s AI detection abilities were put on display and the tool is seen to work even in cases where the sentences have gone through minor changes and edits, as students are wont to do before submissions.

Turnitin’s AI-detection model focuses largely on higher education writing where it works really well. Though it also can be used for middle and high school writing, the chances of generating false positives there are higher.

However, these details don’t diminish the fact that Turnitin is an AI essay checker par excellence, and easily one of the best ones that educators and professors should try out.

  • High precision and reliability, especially for higher education writing.
  • Detects even when changes have been made to AI content.
  • Only for educators and teachers to use.
  • Paid service only

3. Winston AI

Winston AI Detection is one of the few commendable AI detectors to have emerged in the wake of the generative AI tsunami. It has multimodal support for AI detection, allowing you to upload complete documents and image files for analysis. If you get a paid plan, you will also have access to the OCR feature, allowing you to snap a picture of hand-written essays and letting Winston extract words from them for analysis. This is a super feature that can greatly simplify the work of not just those in academia but also in other fields like content creation and web publishing.

Winston’s document scoring is impressive too, ranging from ‘AI-generated’ to ‘Human’ in scale. The visual grading tells at a glance how likely it is that a piece of text is written by AI.

Though the free features are limited to AI detection, paid plans will let you catch plagiarism, generate a list of duplicates found in the text, and also create a printable report to keep in your records. After the 7-day free trial ends, you will inevitably have to get a subscription if you want to continue using Winston. But given its long list of features, it is one of the better AI detectors out there that is worth the price tag.

essay ai reddit

  • OCR for hand-written essays
  • Support for image and document formats
  • Visual grading system
  • Free use for only 7 days
  • Subscriptions are on the expensive side

4. Content Scale

The number of AI detector tools out in the market today is growing by the day, but some names, like Content Scale, continue to crop up again and again in the discussion. Like many of its ilk, it too uses a mix of AI engines, analysis algorithms, and language models to determine if a piece of text is (potentially) AI-generated or human.

essay ai reddit

Though it won’t be able to detect the higher sophistication of GPT-4 language modeling, Content Scale is one of the fewer AI detectors that you can expect to provide all the useful features that anyone starting out will need. Add in the fact that it is free to use, can flag AI-generated sentences, and has a grading wheel that scores for ‘predictability, probability, and pattern’, and you have yourself another winner.

  • Supports up to 25,000 characters
  • Highlights AI-generated sentences
  • No GPT-4 support

5. OpenAI’s Text Classifier

OpenAI, the company behind the revolutionary ChatGPT, has its very own AI essay checker tool. But even with their seminal GPT technology and tons of data to work with, this text classifier is not always accurate which goes to show how difficult the process actually is.

Nevertheless, as a free AI detection service, it gets the job done for the most part. Using it is a cinch as well. Simply enter the text in the ‘Text’ field and click on ‘Submit’. The results won’t highlight which sections or sentences were written by AI. Instead, you will get a statement telling you if the classifier considers the text to be either “unlikely, likely, unclear if it is, possibly, or likely AI-generated”.

essay ai reddit

OpenAI openly states that the effectiveness of the classifier hasn’t been thoroughly assessed. This may not inspire a lot of confidence in the AI essay checker. But if you are suspicious of the contents of an essay and simply want a second opinion, this AI text detector can prove useful too.

  • Simple UI (works with your ChatGPT account)
  • Not as reliable as other tools
  • Doesn’t highlight possible AI content.
  • Effectiveness not assessed by OpenAI

Things to look out for in an AI essay checker tool

There is no shortage of AI detectors or essay checker tools nowadays. Most of them will offer their services for free, with a subscription fee that unlocks additional features. But when you’re out exploring you should consider looking out for the following things to get the tool that fits your needs:

  • Reliability – The reliability of an AI detector can either make or break the deal. If what the tool detects is unfairly biased and fraught with false positives, then you should definitely look the other way. The easiest way to find this is to try it out yourself. Feed the detector AI written material and check the results. Then feed it content that you know to be human-generated and see the results. If the detector gets it right more often than not, it’s a keeper. Some tools, like Turnitin, will outright tell you what they can or can’t do, which is a big plus since you know what you’re getting with them.
  • Free features –  Most free AI essay checkers have some restrictions. Some will have severe character limitations while others will allow long essays to be analyzed on the go. They may also have result-based restrictions, in that you may or may not see which portion of the essay was AI-generated. Some others will allow multimodal essay support for document and image formats. All this will vary depending on the AI checker you’re using. So do go through the AI detector’s website to see what’s available.
  • Costs and Value – Not all AI essay checkers are free. In fact, some of the best ones only let you use the services for a short trial period concluding which you will have to pay for a subscription. But they may not always be for you. A paid subscription for AI detectors is only viable if you have tons of essays to check or if the available features are too good to let go.
  • Sentence flagging –  This is another important feature that you should check. Many free AI detectors, like OpenAI’s Text Classifier, won’t highlight which sentences it thinks are AI-generated. But there are many more that do, and fairly accurately too. Getting down to the paragraph and sentence level of analysis is not easy, but because it provides valuable information that can help tell where the text has been copied from AI generative tools, it is worth keeping in mind.
  • Other features –  Visual scores and results, printable reports, and parameters for analysis are a few examples of additional features that add to an AI essay checker’s advantage. You may choose one AI detector over another based on how useful these features prove to you and simplify your work.

AI detection technology is still in its nascent stage, but many companies are actively developing their own AI detection models to stand out in terms of accuracy, reliability, and features, and take the technology further. It helps to get other users’ perspectives as well. So make sure you also check out what fellow users are saying on forums like Reddit and Twitter, especially if you plan to purchase a subscription.

Let’s take a look at a few commonly asked queries about AI essay checker tools.

Are AI essay checkers reliable?

AI essay checkers are reliable, but not a hundred percent. The fact that AI detector models are still being worked and improved upon, and fighting to catch up with the latest AI capabilities makes AI essay detection with complete accuracy a hard nut to crack. However, there are many AI essay checkers at the frontiers working to improve their tools and models, such as the ones mentioned in our guide above.

Can teachers detect AI writing?

Depending on how well your teachers know you and/or which tools they use to detect AI generated content, it may be possible for them to detect AI writing fairly easily. Know what your institution permits and make sure to follow the guidelines if you don’t want your essay flagged.

Is ChatGPT plagiarism?

The discussion involving ChatGPT and plagiarism is ongoing. Its proponents (read students) call ChatGPT and other generative AI tools just another means to get information, while many educators and professors consider even its instrumental use as plagiarism. Head on over to our guide on ‘Is ChatGPT Plagiarism?’ where we discuss the issue at length and talk about how teachers should look to adopt this powerful technology rather than shun its use going forward.

Nintendo Wont Use Generative AI in Games, Heres Why Thats a Good Thing

Shutterstock"">

Nintendo won't use generative AI, primarily due to copyright concerns.

Generative AI could worsen the problem of job loss in the video game industry.

Current generative AI models don't add much value to video game content, despite the technology's value in other areas like playtesting and virtual voice acting while lines are being recorded.

AI-adjacent technologies are nothing new in video games. Enemies dubbed "artificial intelligence" have existed in games as old as Space Invaders and Pac-Man , but because of generative AI, it's now a matter of contention for game developers. Nintendo, for one, won't be jumping on the AI bandwagon just yet.

Generative AI Raises Serious Ethical Concerns

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explained in a shareholder Q&A that the company won't use generative AI because of potential copyright issues: "Generative AI, which is becoming a big topic recently, can be used in creative ways, but we recognize that it may also raise issues with intellectual property rights." Because of how generative AI learns, vast amounts of (potentially copyrighted) data has been used to understand, recognize, and recreate common patterns.

The issue is that even though the data AI trained on is publicly available, the creators didn't grant explicit permission to AI companies like OpenAI and Google to use their data. The $60 million-a-year deal between Google and Reddit is a good example of this. Something you wrote on Reddit six years ago could get chewed up and spat out to other people by AI without your consent. Additionally, AI chatbots store and learn from your very private conversations with the bot, at least until you opt-out.

These AI models were trained on copyrighted data and are used to create similar, royalty-free, uncopyrighted works. This has led to several ongoing lawsuits aimed at combating the practice. Nintendo has a rich history of litigation concerning its intellectual properties, so the company's careful approach to generative AI is a consistent stance. However, it's worth noting that Furukawa's statement was worded carefully and doesn't imply that Nintendo won't use generative AI at some point in the future.

Another ethical concern over the use of generative AI is the fact that it's potentially taking away jobs from real people. The video game industry has seen massive layoffs over the last few years, which resulted in over 20,000 people losing their livelihoods in 2023 and 2024 due to the post-pandemic slowdown, high-profile mergers and acquisitions, and rising video game development costs.

Now, generative AI is threatening to make things worse, as it could be used to "replace" decades of talent at no extra cost. A single AI model can develop conversations and entire storylines that require a whole team of writers; the same applies to detailed character models and artwork, along with tasks that can be automated, such as game testing.

Fortunately, Nintendo plans to retain its talented workforce in the face of AI. This is what they had to say at the aforementioned Q&A: "We have decades of know-how in creating optimal gaming experiences for our customers, and while we remain flexible in responding to technological developments, we hope to continue to deliver value that is unique to us and cannot be achieved through technology alone."

Generative AI Can Hardly Add Any Value (For Now)

In my opinion, the content generated by current AI models is generic and light on substance for two important reasons. First, AI has no opinions and emotions, so it doesn't have the capability to understand and judge its own work.

When you were (or still are) a high school student submitting a poorly written essay, you had a pretty good understanding of what grade to expect. If you knew you were turning in a well-written essay, there's a good chance that your teacher would agree. AI isn't self-aware and can't evaluate its work, at least not in a way that would create an impact on a game's story, gameplay, or even artwork.

\nLucas Gouveia \/ How-To Geek | Stock-Asso \/ Shutterstock"">

The second reason is that our current generative AI models are designed to predict the most common outcome. Put simply, the story, setting, characters, and minor details that add to the quality of a good game would likely be the most generic, bland version of what it could possibly be. Admittedly, this could be used as a blueprint for writers to build something original on top of what the AI model creates.

Another area of video game development that I really don't want to see generative AI in anytime soon is voice acting. I love quality voice acting, and I truly think that it can make or break a game. I didn't care about the story in Hades initially because I focused on the gameplay, but because of the amazing voice acting, I was compelled to listen to all the little dialogues with the gods that unveil their own stories of Greek mythology.

AI-generated voices are shockingly good now, but even the best models that I've heard so far still fall into the realm of the uncanny valley. The weirdness is even more pronounced when I'm familiar with the voice on which the generated one is based. I quite like what Obsidian Entertainment did with The Outer Worlds —the developers used AI-generated voices as a stand-in while the game was still in development. The lines were later recorded by a cast of professional voice actors, so it's a great showcase of how AI can help us make better games.

To be fair to generative AI, the technology is still in its infancy, so it'll only get better over time. Machine learning algorithms help developers make more realistic graphics, environments, and physics. Additionally, clever AI in enemies can make combat more immersive—think of NPCs running for cover when a shootout starts or drivers avoiding collisions to stay in the race.

Generative AI Is Expensive

While generative AI has the potential to cut down on costs and the time it takes to develop a game significantly, the current situation tells us otherwise. LLMs need a ton of processing power provided by powerful hardware. Moreover, developers have to adapt and train the LLM to suit their needs, so it takes a lot of money and human work before an AI model can be effectively used in a game.

Plus, if the AI plays an active role in the game and data has to be processed continuously, the maintenance costs are steep. A text-based role-playing game, AI Dungeon , reportedly costs $200,000 a month to run in 2021 because it uses OpenAI's LLM and Amazon Web Services to process players' queries.

Even though generative AI can assist game development in major ways and potentially reduce labor costs, it's unlikely to reduce video game development costs. According to a Bain & Company report , only 20% of gaming executives believe that generative AI will reduce development costs.

Its Good to See a Big Company Standing Its Ground

Nintendo isn't a perfect video game company by any measure, but it's good to see a company worth $63 billion say "no" to the generative AI craze. If Nintendo keeps up the good work, retains its reputation among gamers, and sees a market cap increase, its reliance on traditional human talent can have a significant influence on the whole video game industry.

Let's hope that Nintendo's positive example will highlight the long-term value of human creativity and skill.

Doctors, scientists and activists meet to discuss how to pummel HIV

Candles around a red ribbon for World AIDS day.

O n July 22nd the week-long 25th International AIDS Conference kicked off in Munich. Though these gatherings are no longer the war councils they were in the epidemic’s early days—for the strategy to defeat HIV is now pretty much settled—there remains much fighting to be done.

In a report released as the conference started, UNAIDS , the United Nations agency that deals with the disease, said that almost 40m people are now infected. There were 1.3m new infections in 2023, and 630,000 HIV -related deaths. But those numbers are down from 2.1m and 1.3m respectively in 2010. That year is the baseline for calculating the drop of 90% in annual new infections and HIV -related deaths, which experts reckon would end AIDS as a public-health threat. The hope is to reach this target by 2030. On current trends that seems unlikely. But the numbers are, mostly, heading in the right direction.

Because sub-Saharan Africa has been the worst-hit part of the world, most effort has been concentrated there. This has paid off. New infections there since 2010 have fallen by 56%. Partly as a consequence, UNAIDS ’s figures say that for the first time since the epidemic began more new infections occurred outside this part of the world than in it. Another contributor to the shift, however, was that in three areas—Latin America; eastern Europe and central Asia; and the Middle East and north Africa—new infection rates rose.

Although no cure currently exists, AIDS can nonetheless be ended. This depends on two steps: treating those already infected and preventing transmission to those who are not. Targets help, if only to clarify objectives. For treatment, UNAIDS promulgates the easy-to-remember formula “95-95-95”. This translates to an aspiration that 95% of those infected are aware of the fact, that 95% of this group are taking antiretroviral drugs to suppress their infections, and that in 95% of those so treated (ie, 86% of those infected), the treatment is successfully suppressing their viral load. Across the world the “treatment trilogy” is an encouraging 86-89-93, with 30.7m people estimated to be on antiretroviral drugs.

Crucially—and this is where treatment and prevention are linked—people taking antiretroviral drugs in the way the doctor ordered have negligible viral loads and so are unlikely to pass the infection on. This state of affairs, known in the field as U = U (undetectable=untransmissible), gives a constellation of preventive approaches (such as condoms, microbicidal vaginal rings and various prophylactic drug regimes) a better chance of working.

Using drugs for pre-exposure prophylaxis, commonly called P r EP , is a particularly promising approach. Some 3.5m people around the world already take Truvada or Descovy, the first P r EP s to be approved. But these are pills which provide only short-term protection, so must be swallowed regularly. Longer-term cover comes from an injection.

The first injectable P r EP was cabotegravir, made by ViiV Healthcare and approved by America’s Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) in 2021. This gives protection for two months, and a trial in Uganda showed it was more popular than pills. The second is lenacapavir, from Gilead Sciences, which also makes Truvada and Descovy. The meeting coincided with the publication of complete results from PURPOSE -1, a trial of this in South Africa and Uganda. PURPOSE -1, which began in 2021 and involved 5,300 women, showed it gave 100% protection for six months. This is seen as a real breakthrough, and activists called on Gilead to make it available cheaply.

On the question of a cure, some news announced just before the conference caused particular interest. This was the revelation of the seventh known individual to reach apparently permanent remission from HIV infection after a bone-marrow transplant to treat leukaemia. Bone marrow is the source of the immune system’s CD 4 T -cells, which are attacked by HIV . So, in a few cases where a leukaemia patient was also HIV -positive, surgeons deliberately sought a donor who had a mutation in the gene for a T -cell surface protein called CCR 5 (which the virus uses to enter those cells), in the hope of curing two diseases for the price of one. That’s because HIV finds it difficult to infect T -cells of people with mutated CCR 5 proteins.

What is special about the latest case, that of an anonymous individual known as the second Berlin patient (the first, Timothy Brown, was treated in Germany’s capital in 2007), is that the donor had inherited this mutation from only one parent, meaning half the relevant protein molecules in her bone marrow were unmutated and thus remained HIV -friendly. Moreover, news of the second Berlin patient comes after a yet-more-puzzling case reported last year from Geneva, in which the donor had completely normal CCR 5 proteins.

Surprise twist

All this suggests that something more complex is going on. Sharon Lewin, president of the International AIDS Society, which organises the meeting, is a leading light in the search for a cure for AIDS . She suspects that, in the patients who have been cured, preparations for transplant intended to kill the existing marrow, and also the immune response of the new marrow to remaining old marrow, are shrinking the reservoirs in which HIV hides and giving the CCR 5 mutation a helping hand.

Such reservoir-shrinkage, by means of special drugs, is something she is already investigating. Combined with infusions of T -cells genetically engineered to disrupt CCR 5, it might form the basis of a cure. ■

Deadpool & Wolverine is not as subversive as it thinks it is

Brutally violent, but oddly toothless.

preview for Deadpool & Wolverine stars talk the movie's new villain and unexpected moments

That's why some Marvel fans were worried that the foul-mouthed superhero was about to lose all of his edge in order to get in line with the franchise's brand of family-friendly action.

Luckily for them that's not the case, as Wade Wilson is still the brutally violent and chronically horny character he always was.

What the MCU has taken, though, is part of his soul.

This new movie's biggest joke is knowing that Deadpool is talking about sex, drugs and other scandalous conversational topics in a movie owned by Disney and in a cinematic franchise where most movies are targeted to children.

The constant search for a gasp-induced reaction ("I can't believe he just said that!") is driving every decision, while making the MCU the butt of every joke.

But how deep can Deadpool & Wolverine cut when it's now part of the machine?

It's not that the character's sense of humour has changed all that much from Deadpool and Deadpool 2 , but, now that it's directed at a gargantuan corporation he is now part of, his jokes feel toothless and inoffensive.

Wade waves a flag for those who use the term "politically incorrect", poking fun at Gen Z and making the feminist Nicepool the only killable alternate in the movie, but it's all extremely calculated and surprisingly boring.

Related: Marvel Phase 5 - all the MCU release dates you need

All the jabs at the MCU target common topics that fans are already tired of talking about in endless Reddit threads — the saga is at "a low point", the multiverse is "messy", avalanches of cameos feel like an empty attempt at nostalgia, nobody ever really dies... And yet, the movie utilises all of those things too.

It might feel like Deadpool is headlining at a roast about Disney's acquisition of Fox, but it's more like an attempt at explanation for viewers who, frankly, don't even care that much about industry tribulations ( according to Kevin Feige himself , part of the audience don't even know the difference between Marvel and DC).

If Deadpool's sass were as subversive as it thinks it is, he could have saved one of its many cameos for one of the 4,000 employees that lost their jobs during the Disney-Fox merger. Or perhaps it should have been gayer , instead of using queerbaiting to appear edgy and snatch some gay-panic-induced laughs.

Deadpool can joke about pegging, cocaine and Hugh Jackman's divorce, but he can't cut that deep after all.

dogpool, ryan reynolds, deadpool and wolverine

Related: Deadpool & Wolverine cameos show a surprising amount of restraint

Let's not forget that in the time that it took Deadpool to come back, Prime Video 's hit TV series The Boys has delivered the most cut-throat parody of the superhero machine today, much more savage than anything Deadpool & Wolverine could ever dream of.

And for all the criticism (some of it fair) that She-Hulk got, the series' finale offered a much more interesting, meaningful and slightly hurtful punch to the MCU, "revealing" that the franchise is actually run by an AI machine (K.E.V.I.N.) looking for "near-perfect products", which explains why some stories feel written by an algorithm.

In the new Deadpool movie, Wade Wilson is too enamoured by the idea of the Avengers to truly offer transcendent comedy material at their expense.

ryan reynolds, hugh jackman, deadpool and wolverine

At times, the script feels like The Simpsons ' Mr Burns showing up in high school with a beanie hat to talk to the working-class youngsters, or a gargantuan corporation releasing a punk clothing line.

There's nothing wrong with a mindless action movie banking on nostalgic fan service, but it's hard to give Deadpool & Wolverine a pass when the movie desperately tries to hide its own complacency.

The first Deadpool felt like a refreshing jolt to the superhero machine. This one just feels part of the system.

GPT Essay Checker for Students

How to Interpret the Result of AI Detection

To use our GPT checker, you won’t need to do any preparation work!

Take the 3 steps:

  • Copy and paste the text you want to be analyzed,
  • Click the button,
  • Follow the prompts to interpret the result.

Our AI detector doesn’t give a definitive answer. It’s only a free beta test that will be improved later. For now, it provides a preliminary conclusion and analyzes the provided text, implementing the color-coding system that you can see above the analysis.

It is you who decides whether the text is written by a human or AI:

  • Your text was likely generated by an AI if it is mostly red with some orange words. This means that the word choice of the whole document is nowhere near unique or unpredictable.
  • Your text looks unique and human-made if our GPT essay checker adds plenty of orange, green, and blue to the color palette.
  • 🔮 The Tool’s Benefits

🤖 Will AI Replace Human Writers?

✅ ai in essay writing.

  • 🕵 How do GPT checkers work?

Chat GPT in Essay Writing – the Shortcomings

  • The tool doesn’t know anything about what happened after 2021. Novel history is not its strong side. Sometimes it needs to be corrected about earlier events. For instance, request information about Heathrow Terminal 1 . The program will tell you it is functioning, although it has been closed since 2015.
  • The reliability of answers is questionable. AI takes information from the web which abounds in fake news, bias, and conspiracy theories.
  • References also need to be checked. The links that the tool generates are sometimes incorrect, and sometimes even fake.
  • Two AI generated essays on the same topic can be very similar. Although a plagiarism checker will likely consider the texts original, your teacher will easily see the same structure and arguments.
  • Chat GPT essay detectors are being actively developed now. Traditional plagiarism checkers are not good at finding texts made by ChatGPT. But this does not mean that an AI-generated piece cannot be detected at all.

🕵 How Do GPT Checkers Work?

An AI-generated text is too predictable. Its creation is based on the word frequency in each particular case.

Thus, its strong side (being life-like) makes it easily discernible for ChatGPT detectors.

Once again, conventional anti-plagiarism essay checkers won’t work there merely because this writing features originality. Meanwhile, it will be too similar to hundreds of other texts covering the same topic.

Here’s an everyday example. Two people give birth to a baby. When kids become adults, they are very much like their parents. But can we tell this particular human is a child of the other two humans? No, if we cannot make a genetic test. This GPT essay checker is a paternity test for written content.
