Programme description

Research in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering covers six broad research themes ; aerospace engineering, innovative manufacturing, modelling and simulation, nuclear engineering, resilient systems, and structures in extreme environments.

Our postgraduate research programmes in Management of Projects offer the opportunity to study in a multi-disciplinary team alongside leading academics in the field.

Drawing on our expertise in conflict and dispute resolution, risk management, contracts and procurement, supply chains and inter-organisational relations and sustainable development we drive innovative solutions to promote successful project management. We have strong links with industry and excellent employability. Visit our research projects page to browse our range of currently available projects.

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded by the University in recognition of the successful completion of a course of supervised research, the results of which show evidence of originality and independent critical judgement and constitute an addition to knowledge.

A PhD is the target of most postgraduate students who relish the opportunity to undertake a research project with intellectual, scientific, industrial or commercial challenges. Individuals with relevant industrial experience are also encouraged to apply for this level of graduate work, which is of particular value for personal and professional development.

Our research students have the opportunity to develop their skills through robust and flexible training that is designed to:

  • Develop the research skills needed to plan and conduct research, write a thesis and disseminate research findings to stakeholders and the international research community;
  • Gain understanding of the wide variety of research undertaken within the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering and in relevant disciplines across the University;
  • Equip each student with the broader skills to become world leading industry professionals and researchers in the next generation.

All of our research degree programmes are based on supportive supervision in our outstanding research environment. You will carry out a programme of research in a particular area under the supervision of a primary supervisor and one or more co-supervisors. Your primary supervisor would be a research active member of academic staff in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. Co-supervisors may be from another discipline, another institution or even an external organisation, such as an industrial partner, selected to suit the project scope and specific skills required.

Additional programme information

Equality, diversity and inclusion is fundamental to the success of The University of Manchester, and is at the heart of all of our activities.

We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact.

We actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status.

We also support applications from those returning from a career break or other roles.

We consider offering flexible study arrangements (including part-time: 50%, 60% or 80%, depending on the project/funder), carer support funds for conferences, and peer support networks for parents and carers.

All appointments are made on merit. The University of Manchester and our external partners are fully committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Teaching and learning

All candidates for the degree of PhD must undertake a skills review at the beginning of their degree to determine their research, transferable and generic skills requirements. The review will provide the basis for a planned programme of skills training and development. The outcomes of the review and programme of skills development must be discussed and agreed by the student and the supervisory team. The supervisory team will be responsible for ensuring that the student has access to the required skills training and development opportunities.

Students admitted to the degree of PhD must demonstrate satisfactory progress before the end of the first year by submission of a progress report which will be discussed at a formal progress meeting with the supervisory team and an independent assessor. Successful completion enables progression into the next year.

During your studies you will be encouraged to give seminars and write papers for scientific journals and conferences. You will also have access to a broad programme of skills training and professional development. This will help you to complete your research effectively and to keep you at the leading edge of developments in learning and teaching, innovation, enterprise and knowledge transfer to help you succeed in future employment.

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded by the University in recognition of the successful completion of a period of supervised research and training, the results of which show convincing evidence of the capacity of the candidate to pursue research and make an original contribution to knowledge. The thesis is assessed by oral examination (viva voce).

Public Procurement International

A resource on public procurement practice, policy and law, from around the globe.

Corvinus University, Budapest

PhD Opportunities Globally in Public Procurement

Several universities around the world invite applications for students — including U.S. citizens — who would like to pursue a doctoral degree in public procurement. These are opportunities (generally funded by the host university) to immerse yourself in procurement study abroad, to gain perspectives and knowledge that are not available in the United States. Study abroad enables research into topics too often overlooked in the United States (such as sustainability), and can open new career opportunities in international procurement. All that said, though, some cautionary notes, especially for American students:

  • Getting a PhD abroad takes grit. The stipends are low, and so you may well live in cheerful poverty in a beautiful foreign city — which can be barren and cold in the winter, and where you may feel very homesick. Unlike in the United States, there is no ready means of financing your PhD.
  • The cultural differences can be stark. For example, European academics tend to be more old-fashioned and hierarchical. American norms can seem out of place abroad, and people on the street may be hostile towards Americans — but incredibly welcoming, too.
  • The language issues can be profound. If you are not fluent in the local language, you may struggle to keep up academically and socially. And as an Anglophone, you may be asked to translate foreign colleagues’ work from “Google Translatese” into academic English. You should have a sound working knowledge of procurement’s technical terms, and you should be a good writer and editor.
  • A traditional PhD program requires years of hard work, with a great deal of self-discipline to complete the coursework and dissertation.

Some programs to consider (with points of contact):

  • Corvinus University , Budapest (Hungary) – special research position – “ Gender-Smart Procurement Systems ” (Prof. Tunde Tatrai)
  • SAPIENS Network — European Commission-funded program to support PhD’s in sustainable public procurement (Prof. Marta Andhov)
  • University of Nottingham (UK) – Public Procurement Research Group (Prof. Peter Trepte)
  • University of Turin (Italy) (Prof. Gabriella Racca)

Food systems are significant contributors to climate change and environmental degradation. However, to date the prevailing paradigm is focusing on the “feed the world” narrative, which gives more attention to the quantity of food produced rather than sustainability, climate adaptation and mitigation. As a result, our food systems have become unsustainable, vulnerable and exclusive. The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine added inflationary pressures to food prices, thus exposing the vulnerability of current food systems as well as their inherent inequality and interlinked nature. Indicatively, an analysis from the Food Foundation in the UK has shown that soaring food prices have led to 7.3 million adults living in households that skipped meals or had to have smaller meals. For these reasons, public procurement should be used as a strategic instrument to stimulate demand for sustainable food products and services. The UK is committed to a resilient, healthier and more sustainable food system. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs envisages the public sector food and catering as an exemplar for wider society, delivering positive health, animal welfare, environmental and socio-economic impacts. Indicatively, the new government plans were announced in August, according to which school children and hospital patients will be set for higher quality food.

Against this background, this project aims to investigate how the public authorities in England and Scotland are currently delivering on the vision that prioritises a healthier and more sustainable public food sector and to what extent they are falling short. In order to answer this question, the project will explore how and what sustainability aspects are addressed and motivated in public procurement of food in major public institutions. Also, the implemented policies and strategies for improving sustainable food procurement in England and Scotland will be compared with the imminent EU proposal for a legislative Framework for Sustainable Food Systems.

This module aims to introduce students to modelling techniques that can be used to help support decision-makers. Business simulations are one such important modelling technique. This class focuses on two specific business simulation techniques; discrete-event simulation and system dynamics.

This module covers: a rational approach to simulation using a number of examples from manufacturing and service operations; the use of probabilistic distributions in simulation where the emphasis is on ‘relevance for use’ rather than the underlined statistical theories and techniques; basic and advanced techniques of Simul8 (a popular DES software); complex business problems through the construction of causal loop diagrams and computer software used specifically for system dynamics modelling.

  • understand the main uses of business simulations and when to use the two different types; discrete event simulation and system dynamics
  • approach a DES project in a rational way, using performance measures
  • investigate certainty of output and validation of a DES model
  • use Simul8 software and some of its advanced tools
  • appreciate how a causal loop diagram, representing a given system, can be translated into a quantitative system dynamics model;
  • appreciate how system dynamics models can be used to investigate systems behaviours so that practical recommendations can be made for improvements

Assessment and feedback is in the form of an assignment (50%) and an exam (50%).

Risk Analysis & Management (10 credits)

This module aims to introduce the fundamental techniques of risk management, risk-informed decision making and the general principles of risk analysis and its place in risk management, as well as the chance to develop skills in applying these methods to a variety of engineering examples.

The module covers: modelling approaches and methods used by industry currently to manage risk; tools and techniques that are gaining popularity in industry but are not widespread; the basic principles of uncertainty and consequence modelling and the tools and techniques required to apply these principles and Industry standard processes and software tools.

  • understand theory that underpins standard approaches to elicitation of expert judgment
  • understand basic theory of fault and event tree modelling
  • understand the standard approaches to modelling dependency between random variables
  • develop the ability to assess the robustness of a risk model
  • understand the standard methods used in ALARP decision-making
  • appreciate the consequences of choosing specific measures for risk

Assessment and feedback is in the form of an exam (50%) and one group assignment (50%).

Service Operations Management (10 credits)

This module considers the distinctive characteristics of Service Operations Management and how these differ from manufacturing. Through the modelling of service operations, the module illustrates how the different types of service operations can be effectively and efficiently managed.

The module covers: Service Characteristics, dimensions and typologies; Design in services; Service capacity and yield management; Strategic links in services; Productivity and quality management in services; Cultural issues in services and New challenges in services (including service science).

  • understand the complexity of service operations, including their unique features and how they differ from manufacturing
  • use taxonomy models to differentiate services from different perspectives and to be able to critically evaluate and use these models as appropriate
  • critically discuss the use and applicability of strategic and conceptual models and theories developed for service operations in areas such as service design, capacity, strategic links in services (including customer satisfaction and customer loyalty) as well as cultural effects in services
  • understand the complexity of the subject of ‘productivity’ and its relationship with quality in services
  • appreciate the importance of considering services as a system
  • understand the new challenges and issues in service operations including professional services, uses of IT and difficulties in measurement

Assessment and feedback is in the form of a group assignment (30%) and an individual assignment (70%).

Business Analytics (10 credits)

This module aims to prepare students to be state-of-the-art business analysts in the era of big data. It gives them knowledge of and ability to use business analytics tools to make sense of both qualitative and quantitative data, identify the main messages in those data and report such messages back to decision-makers appropriately in order to help them to make better decisions.

The module covers: Application and interpretation of visualisation and advanced analysis techniques alongside an investigation of what makes good data, and both theoretical knowledge in the form of analytics techniques as well as new software skills in relevant analytics software.

  • understand what makes good data collection and be able to critically appraise data quality
  • understand a range of different business analytics techniques and be able to apply them to large, complex data sets
  • apply appropriate techniques for visualization of high dimensional complex data
  • select the appropriate business analytics technique and interpret the results to answer specific questions posed by a client
  • apply appropriate qualitative data mining tools

Assessment and feedback is in the form of a class test (30%) and a group assignment (70%).

Accreditation

Accreditation by a professional body is a mark of assurance that programmes meet the standards set by a profession. It's an accepted and rigorous process that commands respect both in the UK and internationally. It helps students, their parents and advisers choose quality degree programmes.  It also confers market advantage to graduates from accredited programmes both when they are seeking employment and also when they decide to seek professional qualification. Some employers require graduation from an accredited programme as a minimum qualification.

Our MSc Supply Chain Management programmes have been awarded academic accreditation. This demonstrates the degree meets the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) as outlined by the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP).

This accreditation is achieved through a panel of trained and expert accreditors looking closely at our programme’s content and delivery, including its relevance, coherence, challenge, assessment, staffing, quality assurance and resources.

The accreditors also monitor that the programme is continually improving and in line with the latest best practice, providing assurance to our students that they are getting a relevant and quality degree.

Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS)

Accreditation has been awarded for this programme from the Chartered Institution of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) . Learners who successfully complete the above programme and meet the conditions specified may apply for MCIPS, the globally recognised standard for procurement and supply chain management professionals.

Applications must be received within five years of the date of the degree certificate. Acceptance will be subject to the submission of a formal application form and evidence of three years’ experience in procurement and supply management in a position of responsibility.

As part of the accreditation, CIPS currently offers complimentary student membership to those undertaking an accredited programme, for its duration.

PhD Position with the Horizon Europe HARMONY project - Deployable Antennas for Nanosatellites

phd in procurement uk

Job Information

Offer description.

Part of the European Commission’s Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), the Industrial Doctorate programme HARMONY : Innovating New Space Frontiers: Harmonised Federated And Fractionated Systems Unlocking Fresh Perspectives For Satellite Services  has opened an immediate opportunity for a well-funded PhD position on deployable antenna technologies.

Addressing the emerging New Space landscape, which brings to fore constellations of co-operating satellites as means to improve service offerings whilst reducing costs, HARMONY brings together 3 leading European SMEs developing small satellites (Nanoavionics), deployable structures (LSS) and digital physical layer solutions (MBI) together with 3 academic laboratories in the UK (Heriot-Watt), France (CNRS) and Germany (Unibw). The research programme is highly interdisciplinary covering architectural and system aspects, advanced signal processing and passive & active antenna technologies. We are seeking for a highly competitive candidate strongly motivated to contribute to this exciting project.

Short research project description

Technological approaches to deliver steerable directive beams will be reviewed. Possible approaches for the imaging include a deployable parabolic reflector exploiting proprietary flexible conductive membrane of LSS, and deployable flat reflectarray that exploits metallic scatterers to compensate the curved shape of parabolic reflectors. Reflectarrays are favourable for cubesats also due to their capability to deploy in different panels; an alternative approach will thus consider reconfiguring the reflectarray by means of a rollable membrane that will change the pattern of the scatterers. Another backup solution will involve the deployment of a direct radiating active array. Following a trade-off analysis, the selected solution will be progressed to a detailed design considering the implementation of the deployment mechanism, materials to be used, thermoelastic distortions as well as antenna performance. A prototype will be built and tested for mechanical properties before being integrated with a feed for RF testing.

Desired expertise: Mechanical engineering, Antenna engineering

Where to apply

Requirements.

Applicants should have concluded or are about to complete their postgraduate studies in a relevant engineering or applied physics discipline. Selection is also based on the performance of the candidates in other works (e.g. thesis and advanced level courses), as well as through interviews and assignments. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. Gender equality will be ensured in the recruitment process.

Additional Information

The montly gross salary is defined by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Work Programme which, including the social security contributions of the employer, amounts to €3.342,20. An additional mobility allowance of €600/month will also be provided in the gross salary.

An additional budget is available to cover conference travels, network events and the procurement of lab hardware.

A career development plan will be prepared by the research fellow with the support of academic and industry partners opening strong opportunities for employment in the space sector.

According to the MSCA programme, a mobility rule applies for the eligibility of candidates ; a candidate cannot be selected if she/he has been living in Germany for more than 12 months in the past 36 months before the recruitment.
