Essay on My Father for Students and Children

500+ words essay on my father.

Essay on My Father: Usually, people talk about a mother’s love and affection, in which a father’s love often gets ignored. A mother’s love is talked about repeatedly everywhere, in movies, in shows and more. Yet, what we fail to acknowledge is the strength of a father which often goes unnoticed. Father’s a blessing which not many people have in their lives. It would also be wrong to say that every father is the ideal hero for their kids because that is not the case. However, I can vouch for my father without any second thoughts when it comes to being an ideal person.

My Father is Different!

As everyone likes to believe that their father is different, so do I. Nonetheless, this conviction is not merely based on the love I have for him, but also because of his personality. My father owns a business and is quite disciplined in all aspects of life. He is the one who taught me to always practice discipline no matter what work I do.

Most importantly, he has a jovial nature and always makes my mother laugh with his silly antics even after 27 years of marriage. I completely adore this silly side of him when he is with his loved ones. He tries his best to fulfill all our wishes but also maintains the strictness when the need arises.

One of the best things I love about my father is that he has always kept a very safe and open home environment. For instance, my siblings and I can talk about anything with him without the fear of being scolded or judged. This has helped us not to lie, which I have often noticed with my friends.

In addition, my father has an undying love for animals which makes him very sympathetic towards them. He practices his religion devotedly and is very charitable too. I have never seen my father misbehave with his elders in my entire life which makes me want to be like him even more.

My Father is My Source of Inspiration

I can proudly say that it is my father who has been my source of inspiration from day one. In other words, his perspective and personality together have shaped me as a person. Similarly, he has a great impact on the world as well in his own little ways. He devotes his free time in taking care of stray animals which inspires me to do the same.

My father has taught me the meaning of love in the form of a rose he gifts to my mother daily without fail. This consistency and affection encourage all of us to treat them the same way. All my knowledge of sports and cars, I have derived from my father. It is one of the sole reasons why I aspire to be a cricket player in the future.

To sum it up, I believe that my father has it all what it takes to be called a real-life superhero. The way he manages things professionally and personally leaves me mesmerized every time. No matter how tough the times got, I watched my father become tougher. I certainly aspire to become like my father. If I could just inherit ten percent of what he is, I believe my life will be sorted.

Introduction:

My father is my hero and guide in my life. He is the one I look upon whenever I find myself in trouble. My father has been my guiding force for all my major decisions in life. In fact, I have never regretted adhering to his advice as it has always worked for me. He is a hardworking and passionate person. My father has a love for movies. Whenever he gets time, he just loves to watch an old movie. In fact, at times we just fight as to who gets control of the television. But at heart, we love to tease each other and play as well.

My father does not like to sit idle. At times, on holidays if he finds me and my sister doing nothing and just idling our time, he gives us some task or the other. He is also much organised and keeps all his documents in a properly organised manner.

My Father – My Role Model:

My father is my role model for many reasons. First and foremost I admire his passion for work. That is why he is so respected in his office as well. He is always there to help his colleagues even if it is not his work. In fact, one can always see him spending weekends helping others out. Moreover, my father is a simple man. He does not like expensive things and lives an easy and peaceful life. Also, he never shouts on anyone of us. I wonder if he ever gets angry on anything as he takes everything so calmly and takes his time to decide upon things.

My Father – My Friend:

My father is my friend as well. I can discuss everything with my father, even those that I dare not speak in front of my mother. I know that he shall keep it a secret and give the advice I need. He is the one whom I can rely upon blindly during any hour of need, and I know that he shall be there for me.

Importance of My Father in My Life:

My father plays an important role in the family. He is in fact considered as the head of the family. However, I feel that both father and mother have a distinctive role to play in bringing up their children. While on hand my mother has s soft heart, it is my father who shows courage and strength which his children will later on imbibe as their qualities. He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that my father’s role is vital in my life. His presence is vital for maintaining the balance and peace in my family. A father is the one who earns the badge of the stricter parent and whose denial of permission for anything means a lot to the children. I also admire my father and try to imbibe his qualities so that I become like him when I grow up.

My father is a person who takes care of my family and loves each one of us dearly. My father acts as the pillar of support and strength for my family.

My father is the person that I admire the most in my life. I can never forget all the childhood memories that I have with him. It is safe for me to say that my father is largely the reason behind my present joy and happiness. I can say that I am the person who I am today and the person that I am growing to be, is all because of the influence he has had and is having on me. He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.

My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.

My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.

My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.

My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.

I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.

My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.

My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.

About My Father:

Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.

Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.

My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.

He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.

Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.

Why I like my father:

One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.

He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.

He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.

He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.

Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.

Things I Learned from My Father:

I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.

I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.

Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.

A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.

My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.

He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.

From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

For a child, their father is often the most important person in their life, along with their mother. Therefore, the essay is bound to have a personal touch, which makes it more special. Here are a few pointers that kids in Classes 1, 2, and 3 can use to write an essay on ‘My Father’ and ensure their piece stands out.

Let us cover some main points that your child should consider while writing an essay on this topic:

  • The father’s name.
  • What the father does for a living.
  • What the father does at home.
  • How the father is with everyone at home.
  • How the father spends his off days.
  • The lessons the father gives the child.
  • The child’s bond with their father.

Besides the mother, the father is the most important person in a child’s life. The bond between a father and child is a very special one. Below are a few lines about ‘My Father’ for Class 1 and Class 2:

  • My father’s name is Mr XYZ.
  • He is a businessman.
  • He is very organised and clean.
  • He is very loving and kind.
  • He is also very disciplined.
  • My father is hardworking.
  • He loves animals.
  • He loves plants.
  • He is very helpful and cooperative.
  • He motivates me.

10 lines On My Father

When writing a composition about ‘My Father, ’ it is important to teach kids to gather the key points they want to convey and be able to present it as ‘A Paragraph About My Dad.’ Here is an example of how you can do it:

My father is a true hero and my best friend. He is a role model who always guides me on the right path. He is a hardworking individual who manages his office and family with ease. He is very intelligent and helps others with their problems. He is the head of our family and advises and instructs every family member. He is kind-hearted and always helps the needy people in the society. He teaches me the importance of time, etiquette, and humanity. I admire his politeness, gentleness, and love for his family. He is my inspiration and the person I look up to for guidance and support.

As mentioned earlier, the father is a significant member of every family, and the child observes everything the father does. So, how can a child express their observation about their father? Through an essay, of course. Here’s an example for you.

My father’s name is Mr XYZ. He owns a business. He is passionate about his work. He is a well-organised person. He is punctual. My father does yoga every morning. He keeps everything clean in the house. He respects everyone. He is very hardworking. He takes care of all of us in the family. My father loves animals and helps them. He helps poor people also. My father is very kind. He is active throughout the day. He is courageous. When he sees anything wrong, he speaks up. He is a strict follower of honesty. He has principles, and he follows them. My father is the pillar of support and strength for our family. He is always there for us. He teaches us good manners. He is jolly and makes us laugh, too. My father is a very good person.

Writing a long-form essay becomes easier for a child when they have a clear outline and all their key points organised. Once your child has followed the tips above, they can also try writing a long essay. Here’s an example of a ‘My Father’ essay in English:

My father’s name is Mr XYZ. He owns a business. He is very passionate about his work. My father is also extremely punctual and well-organised. He encourages my brother and me to maintain time. He shows us how to organise our clothes, books, and stationery. My father is an honest man. He gives us examples of how honesty is the best policy. My father is active throughout the day. He says that laziness is our enemy.

My father takes care of my mother, brother, and my grandparents. He respects every person, whether they are adults or children. He obeys our grandparents with so much respect. He says that they took great care of him when he was a child. So, now it is his turn to take care of them. He takes great care of our furry friend, Julie, too. My brother and I accompany my father every night when he feeds the strays in our community. He also gives grains to pigeons every morning. Sometimes, some cows pass by, and we feed them. He says that animals cannot seek help because they cannot speak. So, humans must help them. My father also distributes blankets to homeless people every winter.

My father loves plants. Last year, he encouraged us to collect seeds from all the mangoes we ate. Then, we balled them with mud and stored them in a sack in the corner of our garden. One day, my father took us on a long drive. We stopped at intervals and threw those seeds far away. My father says that some of these seeds will grow into trees one day.

My father is a simple man. He says it’s always good to live a simple life. He helps my brother and me with our studies. He always motivates us. He motivates my mother to do well in her business, too. He never scolds us if we don’t do well in an exam. Instead, he encourages us and says that we should always give our hundred per cent in the preparation, and after that, we should not be bothered about the results.

My father also often says that mistakes are lessons. We should always learn from them and not repeat them. He helps my mother with all the household chores. He also helps her in the kitchen.

My father makes delicious food. The steamed dumplings he makes are my favourite. Every weekend, he takes us for a picnic. My brother, Julie, and I have a lot of fun at the picnics. Whenever he gets time, he joins us when we play on our lawn. My father is our support system. My brother and I can discuss anything with him. He doesn’t scold us. He told us not to do something politely if we did anything we shouldn’t do. My father is my superhero. I love my father.

Essay writing is an activity that will help your child in the long run. It will develop many faculties in your child. When your child is asked to write an essay on their dad, they will first think about the points they want to write. Then, they will put those thoughts on paper in short and simple sentences. My Father Is My Hero: An Epitome of Dedication, Humility, and Compassion

Introduction

In the tapestry of my life, my father is the thread that weaves together values of dedication, humility, and compassion. He is not just a parent but my hero, an extraordinary figure whose influence has shaped the person I am today. His life story is a testament to the power of hard work, kindness, and selflessness.

My father’s journey began with a remarkable sense of obedience and determination, qualities instilled in him from a young age. His parents, my grandparents, often regale us with tales of his unswerving commitment to his studies and the goals he set for himself. Whether it was acing his exams or excelling in sports, he constantly worked toward his objectives. This determination left an indelible mark on his character and inspired not only his siblings but also his peers.

Yet, his brilliance in academics and sports was only part of the story. What truly set my father apart was his compassionate nature. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to fellow students, making him a beloved figure in his school. This sense of responsibility extended to his family, where he actively participated in household chores, helping my grandmother without hesitation. These actions instilled in him a profound understanding of the importance of contributing to family well-being.

My father’s dedication to education and commitment to hard work were mirrored in his pursuit of a better life for our family. Despite facing numerous challenges, he continued to strive for excellence. His relentless dedication to his work served as a shining example, demonstrating that success was attainable through perseverance and determination. His career achievements were a source of pride for our family, and we learned from him the importance of setting and working toward our goals.

However, what sets my father apart is his belief in leading a simple life. Despite the means to afford a luxurious lifestyle, he chooses to live in a modest flat. His values of contentment and minimalism are lessons he imparts to us daily. He teaches us that happiness is not found in material possessions but in the simplicity of life and the richness of experiences. These values have shaped our worldview and instilled in us a profound appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

One of the most awe-inspiring facets of my father’s character is his commitment to giving back to society. He dedicates a significant portion of his earnings to social work. He actively participates in a non-profit organization dedicated to providing food and education to underprivileged children. Every Saturday, he selflessly spends his time with these children, distributing not only food but also love and care. His actions reflect a broader lesson: that success is not solely measured by personal achievements but by the positive impact one can make in the lives of others. His dedication to social work has instilled in us a deep sense of responsibility to contribute to our community and help those in need.

In conclusion, my father is not just a parent but an embodiment of dedication, humility, and compassion. He is my hero, an inspiring figure who has profoundly influenced my life and the lives of our family. His unwavering support, his dedication to his responsibilities, and his compassionate heart make him the true hero in my life. His life story and values inspire us to become better human beings, to live a simple yet fulfilling life, and to remember the importance of giving back to society. My father’s influence is a beacon of light guiding my way, and I am eternally grateful for the lessons he imparts and the love he shares with our family and the wider community.

My Role Model is My Father Essay

The importance of the word ‘Father’ and its general worth towards family is limitless. This word generates honor because of symbol good deeds which every head of the family tries to earn.

My Role Model is My Father Essay

My father is the guiding force and leader of our family, bringing our aspirations into reality. He is not just a figurehead, but a role model who foresees the needs of the time and shapes our family through his unwavering responsibility and dedication. I hold immense respect for him due to his extraordinary achievements.

As my role model, my father accompanies me in all my endeavors, ensuring that I make the right choices. He attentively listens to my problems and imparts valuable lessons to shape my thinking. His primary concern is my future career, and he leverages his maturity, knowledge, and awareness of the modern world to evaluate my interests and decisions, going above and beyond to help me develop and achieve my goals.

Despite his financial limitations, my father fulfills my genuine needs and ensures that I never feel inadequate. He works tirelessly, sweating profusely, to increase his earnings for my sake. He sacrifices his own comfort, willingly eating less, in order to provide for my well-being.

Being educated and possessing a logical vision, my father has evolved into a contemporary and progressive figure. He utilizes his knowledge and embraces modernity to raise me in a manner that equips me to thrive in today’s competitive world. He leaves no gaps in meeting my needs and actively supports my personal growth and career-building process.

As an ideal father, my father spares no effort in fulfilling my necessities. He strives to eliminate any obstacles that could hinder my development and career path, leaving no room for shortcomings.

Daily Test - Attempt Now

What sets my role model father apart is his refusal to impose his own career choices on me. He believes that I should pursue a future based on my own passions, suitability, and capabilities. The tradition of following specific family professions is fading away, as doctors no longer insist on their children becoming doctors, professors do not compel their offspring to pursue academia, and army officers do not force their sons into the military. Similarly, my father desires that I have a better future according to my own choices.

My father is a mature and understanding individual who assists me in making important decisions. Like most devoted fathers, he plays a significant role in my life, supporting my career aspirations and helping me overcome daily challenges. When I face difficulties and seek guidance, I instinctively turn to my father. He selflessly puts aside his own priorities to provide the necessary support. He works tirelessly, making countless sacrifices to help me navigate through my problems.

We celebrate Father’s Day every year on 19 June to strengthen the relationship and remind a father of the sacrifices he endured towards his kids when they were in need. Unfortunately, it has become a mere formality for many, lacking genuine emotional connection and appreciation. In today’s times, children often choose to live separately from their fathers, prioritizing their own families and disregarding their responsibilities towards their aging fathers, who cling to hope for support.

It is very important that our fathers should be given deep respect and utmost respect not only because they are fathers, but for their unparalleled fatherhood and incredible sacrifices towards us. We must recognize the value of their presence and the impact they have on our lives. By cherishing our fathers, upholding our duties, and expressing gratitude for their sacrifices, we can truly acknowledge the exceptional role models they are in our lives.

He has his own business of online marketing but never force me to do go in the same field or attract me towards his own business instead he always promote to do what I want in my life. He is really a good dad not because he helps me but because of his knowledge, strength, helping nature and most importantly his way of handling people.

He always respects his parents means my grandparents and cares for them all time. I still remember that when I was little, my grandparents were generally talked to me about my father naughtiness in his childhood but they told me that your father is very good person in his life, be like him. It is my father who wants to see everyone happy in the family and always asks whenever anyone becomes sad and solves his/her problems. He loves and cares my mom and suggests her to take rest when she gets tired of doing all the household chores. My dad is my inspiration, he always becomes ready to help me in my school tasks and even go to every PTM to discuss my behaviour and performance in the class.

My father was born in very poor family however currently he is one of the richest people in the city because of his patience, hard works and helping nature. My friends generally tell me so lucky of being the son of such father. I usually laugh on such type of comments and tell my father, he also laughs and says that what they are telling is not true but the truth is that I am so lucky to have son like you. He tells me that, my son always be what you want and always believe in you.

Writing About My Father

write an essay on my father

By Laura Zinn Fromm

A few days ago, one of my students emailed. She had read an essay I’d just published about my father—dead now 19 years but still giving me plenty of juice to write about.

The essay was about how volatile my Dad had been, and how loving—a love I rediscovered in letters he’d written to my mother at the end of their marriage. My mother had given me the letters during the pandemic, while she was cleaning out her house. I knew my parents had once loved each other fiercely and unambiguously, but the memory was an ancient one that predated my birth, and by the time I started to pay attention to how they treated each other, it was clear that love had been undone by disappointment and grief. They’d had a stressful marriage, and eventually moved on to other people—my father remarried, adopted a baby, divorced, became engaged to two other women and raised my half-sister alone; my mother moved in with another man for ten years, then left him and married someone else. Scads of boyfriends, girlfriends, semi-siblings and step siblings came and went; the only one I still talk to is my delightful half-sister.

But my father’s letters to my mother, written in the middle of their marriage and then at the end, showed that there had been layers to their relationship. My father had been bipolar, suicidal and often cruel to my mother, but the letters gave me insight into his loneliness, confusion and remorse over what had happened between them.

My student wrote:

I loved your piece about your father. I wish I could get to the point where I can balance my mother’s flaws and good points in a balanced, detached way. Did you achieve your clarity and equanimity mostly through therapy? Any suggestions? When you get a chance.

This was an excellent question. Had I actually achieved clarity and equanimity? And if so, how?

Of course, therapy helped—I’m 59 and had started seeing my therapist when I was 31; we had spoken about my parents at length. But it wasn’t just therapy that allowed me to consider my father from different angles. In addition to the letters, my mother also gave me journal entries my father had left behind, and home movies she had transferred to a thumb drive.

The movies showed my parents when they were young and carefree, chic on safari in Africa, cavorting on beaches in Tahiti and the Jersey Shore. There was my father in swim trunks, sticking out his tongue and doing handstands on the beach, there was my mother looking like Audrey Hepburn, gorgeous in a red bikini and sunglasses. Long after their divorce, these props allowed me to imagine what they felt as they reveled in each other and the countries they explored together. I could hear my father teasing my mother, and my mother laughing and saying, “Oh, Steve!”

The letters and movies allowed me to piece together what they had savored and surrendered.

Some of the journal entries were hard to read (my father had some choice things to say about their sex life) and it took me three-plus years to write the essay I recently published. I would read a journal entry, squirm, then put it away, sometimes for months. When I finally returned to the letters and journal entries, I set a timer and wrote for 15 minutes, just enough time to reread and maybe write a few challenging sentences. Eventually, I was able to write for longer stretches and finish the story. Telling my parents’ story allowed me to exert some control over it, unlike the powerlessness I had felt as a teenager, watching their marriage implode at the dinner table.

There was something else too that allowed me to write about the difficulties of love: meditation.

I meditate 30 minutes every morning, sometimes outside. All the volatility I experienced as a kid melts away as I close my eyes, repeat my mantra, and reset my central nervous system. Meditation allows ideas to bubble up to the surface and is the most effective way I know to self soothe. Plus, it’s free. You don’t even need an app. I just set a timer on my phone and silently repeat my mantra ( ima, Hebrew for “mother”), while thoughts ricochet around my brain and finally dissolve into something resembling clarity.

I wrote back to my student:

Yes, of course, therapy helps, but I think meditation and writing about my parents in a focused way helped even more. Just the process of thinking about them in a calm way (through meditation) allowed me to detach from how I felt about them and let me “observe” them from a safe distance. And then writing about them, and wrestling with their challenges but also forcing myself to find a way to deliver some message of hope and insight for the reader, also helped. So, I guess the short answer is yes, therapy helped, but meditation and focused writing helped even more.

My student wrote back: “Thank you for sharing what helped you with your parents. Writing is definitely therapeutic. I still have to try meditation.”

If you are tackling difficult subjects, I recommend it all.

Lovely essay, Laura! I agree–mining our parents’ papers can be enlightening and disturbing at the same time. I’m glad you have been able to find a balance between digging in and stepping back. I’m also a longtime meditator. When I’m working on a writing project, I find that once my mind settles, new ideas arise and guide me forward. Lately, I’ve had to keep a pad of paper next to me when I meditate because a phrase will come to me that I know I’ll forget if I don’t write it down. Not exactly the greatest meditation practice! Thanks again for this thoughtful piece.

Deborah, thanks for reading. I think keeping a pad of paper next to you while you’re meditating is a great idea. We have to find ways to keep track of the ideas that fly into our heads during meditation.

Just before my mother died, I asked her, “What are you most proud of?” First she said, “Nothing.” When I said, “Try again,” she said, “Having had the courage to leave your father.” That was the first time I truly accepted that she had to end that marriage, after a lifetime of blaming both parents for forcing me and my four siblings to choose, to take sides, to reject that piece of ourselves that was the other parent. It was a moment of forgiveness and, finally, at the eleventh hour, growing up. Reading your essay, Laura, I kept thinking, why did your mother want you to have those home movies and letters from your father? What did she want you to know understand, feel? Whatever it was, she succeeded. It is only fitting that it is HER name (Ima) that you invoke during meditation. The thread, of course, is writing. Your father’s, and now yours. I rejoice for you and with you.

Margaret, thank you so much for reading. I feel for your mother, and you. My mother and her father were/are both letter writers, and I think she respects the process. I love what you wrote, “to reject that piece of ourselves that was the other parent.” That’s a great subject to write about.

Wonderful piece about writing as a therapeutic tool!

Kate, thank you, as always! xo

great piece. I vow to meditate!

Vicki, meditation is the best and cheapest way I know to process feelings and generate writing ideas. Hope you try it!

I appreciate your thoughtful essay about your mom and dad. Your mom must have loved you a lot to encourage your love for your dad, whom she had “hated” at one time or another.

Writing and meditation feed our souls. I have been meditating on the scriptures for over 50 years and find that I can not live without my twice a day half hours with the Quiet One. I don’t know who I am or what I want until I calm down and let peace flow over me and through me.

Writing is new and also freeing. I will attempt to write more about my dad, whom I have accepted, but cannot love as of yet. You seem to be more at peace with your father than I am. Memories of my dad are still painful, with very few moments of joy. My mom is emerging as a more positive influence thanks to your encouragement to write about her.

Bravo for climbing the mountain of parental dysfunction and seeing beyond the sharp ridges to the pleasant valleys below.

Liz, first, thank you for taking the time to read this! I did not know that you meditated twice a day, for half an hour. You are amazing, as always! I love your sentence: “I don’t know who I am or what I want until I calm down and let peace flow over me and through me.” I get your conflicted feelings about your Dad. You can probably write your way towards some type of peace with him if you write more about his parents and what you know of his grandparents. Also love your sentence, “Bravo for climbing the mountain of parental dysfunction and seeing beyond the sharp ridges to the pleasant valleys below.” Gorgeous imagery!

I’ve meditated and even taken meditation classes for years but your writing inspired me to do do again

Laura, thank you for this heart-centered essay. I’ve found a similar path to help me process a complicated family history: therapy, writing, and meditation. And while all have been healing, exploring my parents’ stories through writing has done the most to help me find compassion for them both–and for myself. We are all survivors.

Road less taken, thank you for reading. I think you’re right—it is writing that ultimately lets us reframe the story.

Congratulations Laura, it takes guts and maturity to write about y/our parents as —other adults, and I love how you are able to level with them in retrospect, and share your befindings and method.

How to Write a Family Essay with Examples

How to Write a Family Essay with Examples

Writing about your family gives you a chance to think about your own experiences and what matters to you. It lets you look at how your family works together and share important stories from your life. This guide will help you write a good family essay that others will find interesting, whether you're doing it for school or just want to put your family's story on paper.

What is a Family Essay?

A family essay is a personal story that talks about your experiences with your family, your relationships, and what you value. It's a type of personal essay that teachers often ask students to write to see how well they can tell their family stories.

The main goal of a family essay is to share your own thoughts on family values, traditions, and how you're all connected. It's a chance to talk about the love in your family, share favorite memories, or describe the strong bonds between family members.

Useful Tips for Writing an Essay on Family Topics

To write a great family essay, you need to plan and write carefully. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Start with something interesting: Begin your essay with a fun fact or story about your family to get the reader's attention right away.
  • Make a clear main point: Write a short statement that sums up the main idea of your essay. This will guide your writing and help readers understand what you're focusing on.
  • Do your research: Find out more about your family's history, traditions, and cultural background. This will make your essay more real and detailed.
  • Organize your essay well: Arrange your thoughts into a clear introduction, middle sections, and conclusion. Each part should lead smoothly into the next.
  • Use clear descriptions: Make your family members and experiences come to life with detailed descriptions. This will help readers feel connected to your story.
  • Include your own thoughts: Share how you feel about family events or how your family works together. This makes your writing more real and personal.
  • Check and fix your work: After you finish writing, take time to read over and improve your essay. Look for grammar mistakes, make sentences better, and make sure your ideas are clear.

When thinking about how to write about your family, remember that being real is important. Your own point of view and experiences will make your essay special.

Interesting Ideas on Family Essay Related Topics

Picking a good topic is important when writing about your family. Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

  • How family traditions have changed over time
  • How technology affects how families talk to each other
  • Finding a balance between being yourself and what your family expects
  • How extended family members fit into today's families
  • What we learn from family arguments and how we solve them
  • How cultural background affects how families work together
  • What "family" means in different types of families
  • Why family support is important for personal growth
  • Dealing with differences between older and younger family members
  • How shared experiences make family bonds stronger

When you write about these topics, think about how they relate to your own life. For example, if you're writing about how technology affects family communication, you could share a story about how video calls help you stay in touch with relatives who live far away.

Remember, the best family essays mix personal stories with concepts about how families work and how they fit into society.

Family Essay Example: Why family support is important for personal growth

“ Family support is similar to having a group of people who both encourage you and protect you. It's more than just having people nearby; it's about having individuals who truly want you to succeed. When I was afraid of speaking in front of others, my sister's encouraging words helped me get through my first presentation. And truthfully, who else but family would listen to you practice guitar poorly without complaining? This kind of support without conditions gives us the bravery to try new things outside of what we're used to. It's also a way to learn from others - I've learned many things, from cooking advice to useful life tips, from different family members. Even when we don't agree, we grow; those serious discussions at dinner taught me how to defend my opinions and express my thoughts clearly. Yes, family can be frustrating at times, but they're also the ones who will stop what they're doing to help you move or listen to you when you're worried late at night. This combination of care, challenges, and support creates a special environment where we can be our true selves and slowly become the best versions of ourselves. ”

Closing Remarks

Writing a family essay helps you learn about yourself and think deeply. It's a chance to look closely at your relationships, celebrate what makes your family special, and understand more about how your family affects your life and the world around you.

Remember, the process of writing about your family can be just as rewarding as the finished essay. Take this opportunity to think about how your family has shaped your life and let your true voice come through in your writing.

My Son and Gus Walz Deserve a Champion Like Tim Walz

The Walz family at the Democratic National Convention.

By Tina Brown

Ms. Brown is the author, most recently, of “The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor — the Truth and the Turmoil."

The sight at the Democratic convention on Wednesday night of Tim Walz’s 17-year-old son leaping to his feet, with streaming eyes, a hand to his chest with a cry of “That’s my Dad” was heart piercing.

As the mother of Georgie, a 38-year-old on the spectrum who still lives with me, I recognized him immediately as one of “ours,” a sweet, unfiltered, slightly bewildered-looking young man who wasn’t quite sure what was expected of him in this epic moment of political adulation.

Gus Walz has, according to his parents, a nonverbal learning disorder, A.D.H.D. and an anxiety disorder, all of which they regard not as a setback but as his “secret power,” that makes him “brilliant” and “hyperaware.”

I know exactly what they mean. One of the joys of my life in the social churn of New York is living with a son whose inability to read the room makes him incapable of telling anything but the truth. Once, as my husband, Harry Evans, and I left a pretentious social gathering in the Hamptons, Georgie told the host sunnily: “Thank you very much. No one spoke to me really, so it was a very boring evening. The food was OK. I doubt I will come again.”

“I have never been prouder of you in my life!” shouted my husband in the car. How many times have all of us wanted to say that as we gushed about the fabulous time we just hadn’t had? Then there was the moment he went up to Anna Wintour at one of my book parties and asked if she was Camilla Parker Bowles. And the time at the intake meeting for a supported work program, when the therapist asked Georgie, “Has anyone ever molested you?” “Unfortunately not,” he replied. Georgie teaches me every day how much we depend on social lies to make the world go round. His sister — his forever best friend — and I feel so lucky to have him in our lives. So did his dad, who died in 2020.

And yet for people who are different and have no support, the world can be bleak. Their loneliness can be agonizing. Some people assume the school days are the hardest, but it’s the years after that are the social desert. Having a friendly, forgiving workplace to go to is critical. It’s often their only taste of community and what makes them such reliable and rewarding employees. The work from home movement has been a killer for people with special needs, often depriving them of the only social connections they have.
